I believe in his lifetime Cherubini was best known for his heroic rescue operas; all of these overtures have the spirit of Beethoven's "Fidelio." Now, thanks to such divas as Callas and Gencer, he is ironically best known for his opera about the ultimate anti-heroine Medea.
