My mom been doing the brown liner and lipgloss since before I was born (Mac Chesnut and Lip glass). I’m talking the 1980’s and it looked bomb!!!! I do it right till this day! ❤🤎
Thank you! Over 20 years ago, you walked into a MAC store as a Black woman, they immediately pulled out MAC Chestnut lip liner and clear Lipglass. Then throw in MAC blush in Raizin (because nobody was doing orange blush then). T

Yes! Black women have been doing this since the 70s and 80s, my Nana told me she used to do it back in the 70s (her party days) and topped it off with a picked out afro and gold hoops. That was THE look, we've done it forever. Yet again, people act like it's brand new and act shocked everytime they see it. If anything, the black women I grew up around ONLY used this combination, because they said it looked more natural to their real lips. I love how the brown from out skin fades to our lips and then fades to pink. Natural ombre lol

The 'clean girl' look is my go-to aesthetic. The key is subtlety- wear just enough makeup so people think you're not wearing any.

Being a teen in the early naughties as a POC gave us few options combined with not wanting to get in trouble for wearing too much make up. Throw on some hoops and a red lip when I’m fancy and shit son, I’ve been rocking this for like 18 years.
So basically my makeup look for the last 20 years. I’m over here trying to get hip with the times and learn to contour and what not, only to see people circle back my usual look. 😂
I have a very tall forehead and far-back hairline, so NO WAY would I do a slicked back bun!! 😂 Your hairline almost touches your eyebrows, and your face is very oval shape (proportional/balanced), so I think it looks good on you! ☺️

The whole clean girl thing only works if you have clear skin and shit. If you have acne it’s seen as “dirty” and you can’t participate. I’ve seen so many people with acne put on their skincare and do the whole clean girl thing and get made fun of so much.

1) Darcei, you looks wonderful as ever girlie! Glad to see the return of Black Girl Tries!!!
2) for me? The "clean girl" aesthetic is just what black and brown girls did when we had no makeup brands catering to us. We didn't have foundation in our shades, so we didn't have an emphasis on base makeup. Just clean and moisturized ("glowy & dewy") skin. No real eye makeup available to us (that weren't weird icy shades) so we made do with lashes and maybe a basic brown eyeshadow. Barely any everyday lip shades, so a lip liner (or sometimes, an eyeliner lol) and some gloss
Literally just making it work with scraps. As usual. (We still made it look good, tho)
Love that she started the clean look by actually cleaning her mouth and face

As someone who’s in a chorale we do this kind of makeup and hairstyle for almost every appointment: minimal makeup to not look too pale against the lights but also not too extreme when on stage. Slick backed hair into a bun to make us look clean and get hair out of the way when singing. Also because some songs require choreography.
