I liked your review. We designed this DUNE game exactly for the movie goers who are not into 6 hour games. "Movie Dune" is more replayable for its audience. This is the "foot in the door" game...nice call. About the best parts. The best part is the battle wheel interaction between players.. And we understand that 'gamers' will play DUNE and non-gamers will play Movie Dune.
Thanks Peter, you all have done a fine job creating a version of Dune that will appeal to more casual and non-gamers. And yes, the battles between players are a lot of fun! I think for non-gamers the way battling is done in "Movie Dune" with the more simplified Battle & Market cards is a great way to introduce them to the kind of head-to-head battling & card play that takes place in many area control games.
i love the movie dune ! this is the first board game iv played since risk. its fast fun and i recommend it for sure. Great job Peter and crew
Yeah that is the problem with a lot of review channels is they tend to side with long games and more difficult. Casual audience is a much different audience. Not a lot of rules and less then an hour. I played both Dune games.. "movie Dune" hits the table MUCH more often and I am a "hardcore" gamer that was able to sucker the casual gamer into the game. None of them play much games. Maybe monopoly up too catan or ticket to ride. They got the game down fairly quickly because each faction had specific tasks laid out for them. So 100% agree with Peter on this one it is easy for casuals.
I still liked the review knowing it was more ment for non casuals.
It is a pity that you can not fully enjoy the game if there are only two casual players (me+wife)
I think the stronghold overlay is used in a 2-player game when you reduce the number of strongholds. They are not used for making them look clearer as strongholds.
Good nuts and bolts explanations. Much appreciated in a world of gaming videos trying to push bling and make people just buy everything you guys give us right to the point comparisons. Well done.
Thank you!
Many thanks for a great review! I was thinking about buying a new version of the game that I really like. Thanks to you, I know that I can enjoy the great game resumed in 2019 with no regrets. Great job!
Glad you liked our video! Let us know what you think of it!
I like the new version of the dune and classic dune. I like to call it baby dune and it gets my dune fix in if I can't get a good solid 5-6 players. It's a good starter for new players to learn some of the mechanics and the turn limit and max to an hr of play is great. I feel once you have it down you can graduate to adult dune. Where the true fun begins were true betrayal, strategy and backstabbing happens.
I've been playing the OG Dune with a group of friends for a bit now. We love it, including my (incredibly smart) 10 yr brother.
My family is moving away however, and no one else are gamers like me and my brother. So I'm going to be gifting him the $35 "movie dune" so he can play w/my non-gamer Dad.
I personally think that anyone who is at least a moderate gamer can learn and love the OG Dune, especially if someone who has played before is teaching.
My plan is to get both, play Movie Dune first, they play Original Dune afterwards.
Merci les gars, c'était la vidéo que je cherchais pour faire mon choix avant l'achat de l'une des deux versions, je vais m'arrêter sur la version originale grâce à vos lumières ;)! Merci encore !

I just found your channel a few days ago. As a gamer married to a non-gamer, I can relate. What I’d love to see (especially now since the end of year is approaching) is a top 10 list. Are you doing something like that?
Thats a great idea! I think we might try and do something like a top 10 for 2021 or something. Thanks for the support!
@@Love2HateBGreviews The games my wife is willing to play include Coloretto, Lost Cities (which she actually likes), and Azulejo and Sagrada (both tolerated). We’ve played Lost Cities so much that I’m sick of it!
We've done a video on Lost Cities! We both enjoy it quite a bit. We're gonna be doing one on Sagrada and it's expansions here in the near future.
Old video but seeying now. I believe they gonna introduce the diplomacy rules with the new factions. Something very similar was done with Start WArs outer rim. More rules with interaction were introduced and made the game more filled with negotiation. So in the end will bemore like Optional rules attached to other factions.
Glad you found the video. Thanks for the update and watching!
Thanks for a great review! I hate diplomacy in the old Dune, so I think "movie" dune with pure area control will be better fo me.
Glad you liked it! Yes movie Dune is less diplomacy and more area control.
And a much faster play too so you don't need to make a day event of it. Last game i played went the full 5 rounds and still played in under 90 minutes. And that was with LOTS of battles. I have played games in under 60 mins
I also compare ankh, rising sun and blood rage to the godfather since they are all dudes-on-a-map games (and designed by the same guy to boot).
That would be quite the comparison for those 4. The Godfather Corleone’s Empire is more Worker Placement and Area Control. I feel that would be the most different from all but still great game designed by Eric Lange. Lance and I love it. The other three are also built off area control but feel quite different and would be a good video to do a comparison since they are part of the spiritual successor trilogy… thanks for the suggestion!
1:43 reusing the actors? legendary doesnt make marvel or DC movies.... what? nore does denis villeneuve
Thanks gents! Great review
Thanks for watching!
Actually the original Dune was published by Avalon Hill way back in the 70s. The six player game is brutal....getting thrown under the bus by alliances that can shift and be totally unrealistic. Once I partnered with someone for half a win, and the next turn he deserted me and got a third of a win. I was trashed for the rest of the game. I guess that is Diplomacy in the old game. They had to change the tournament rules after this happened to enough players. Ironically we used to play original Dune it was without alliances and three or four players and it was great fun..without the worm cards allowing you to turn the game factional. When do you get six players together? Original Dune advanced rules..the Guild is all powerful. They can take their turn last. I'm keen to play the new game. I look at it the other way...the old game was brilliant but flawed. Karama and Truthtrance cards along with supplied combat and Alliances created a lot of confusion and ill feeling at times. I'm hoping for a more streamlined game..although would have like about 6-7 turns. Give the game a chance to settle and a chance for board situation to mature before calling the game. I'm glad they have reimagined Dune and I'm looking forward to the new version.
Ohh heck ya.. Dune is know to be punishing as heck.. It is the most cut throat space game of all time I think. With 6 players knowing that your gonna lose by end of round 1 is ouch! That's kind of been the TI, blood rage problem told. You know very early your gonna lose and the best player always wins... I do love Original dune.. but you have to start off by telling everyone... this game is feel bad. Everyone okay with that?
Thanks a lot for the review.
I want to interest my wife in board games.
I'm afraid that none of the games is suitable for playing in two
Ya both of these are not games I would prefer to play 2p unfortunately.
Thanks for great overview. Decided to get 2nd expansion to Dune (2019), instead of buying "MovieDune".
My 2-step plan for getting my current group interested in Dune (which I will not even attempt with less than 6 *motivated* players):
* Cosmic Encounter (with Cosmic Incursion & Dominion) to introduce asymmetric play (helps to have same designers on board!)
* Dune Imperium (with Rise of Ix) for 4 players for same thematic feel / lower player count / shorter game without sacrificing replayability..
I haven’t gotten the new expansion but eventually will someday. Dune Imperium is great also. I also feel like I will only play this game if I have 6 people to join in….
But which Dune is better to play if there are only two players? )))
Errrrrr.....I know.....I got both!
Have I time & players for big Dune? If not "movie" comes out!
Since filming this, I have purchased Dune Imperium…If I can set up a 6-player game Dune (2019), if just 4-player, it’ll be Dune Imperium. Have you played Dune Imperium yet?
@@jbarr4184 No, it like rocking horse shit. 🙄
Movie hype created a hardcore Dune game version that is not hardcore anymore...
good video but you spend too long breaking down irrelevant artistic details
Freh men
This convinced me not buy either. My group swear by the original Dune board game but we all know we'll never have the time or player count opportunity to play it again. I had considered getting 'movie Dune' to get the shorter game that plays well with smaller player counts, but this video convinced me not to bother.
You should! It's genuinely very good, and great fun when you can't get 6 players together.
@@AnEnormousNerd I'll 2nd that. Played a 4 player game last night. It all came down to the last battle with 3 players able to win. Final result (2 spice margin) sealed with a Trailer card. Very tense for a short game.
Wow, Movie Dune is straight worse in every way....
That’s how I feel…
Disagree, it's infinitely better in 2-4 players AND under 1 hr playtime.
Don't waste your time with this review, its not really a comparison, waste of time
Sorry you feel that way but here's a quote from Gale Force Nine's twitter:
"@Love2HateGames compares the Dune 2019 edition with the new Dune: A Game of Conquest and Diplomacy. If you've seen both but don't know which is best for you this is a great guide to make the decision easier!
