I would have pre wired the walls. You could have put a couple of solar panels up with a battery bank and used DC power or put an inverter inline to add some electrical for lights and charging cell phones.
@@kevin34ct that would have been the best way but it can still be done with some outside electrical piping and outlet boxes. won't look as good though with all that strapped to the walls.
I would have done things a lot different as would just about everyone( were all different) but I got to say outstanding video and job mate. Friends family and land to camp, living the dream. God bless

@mary CBS news jane - If they were concerned they would have said so. These folks are not building a residence that they will live in. It's just a camping spot but happens to be a step up from a tent. How many tents are insulated? So instead of recognizing the purpose of the cabin, the naysayers go right in with the criticism.
Considering it was meant to keep cost low- it did it's job very well. If can easily be heated with a buddy heater for a hunting weekend.

Shadel Garry I have a better idea. How about our corrupt government buy up a whole bunch of the abandoned hotels that litter cities across the nation and hire the homeless people to help restore it. If you want a room to live in when it's done, you get on the list to work. That's a better idea than suggesting what a good deed it would be if this man and his dad put in their hard work and energies building these same houses for the homeless. It's not and easy job and why should they? Most of the homeless are not crippled and even those that are can lift a paintbrush. When I see those abandoned hotels on the Urban Exploration channels, it makes me so mad that vandals and even the homeless have destroyed much of the property. There has to be better ways than suggesting people go around building cabins for the homeless who don't participate.
What a magnificent job you both did... It helped me lots... I was so busy watching, I never realized the title of your video. You put all your efforts and love into a cozy, warm sanctuary to slaughter the very beings who were there before you. You brought darkness and death..... Very sad.... perhaps you'll learn much when in your next life... you get to be the deer..... Brother I tell ya. I must of looked at least 15 or more free pallet cabins on here and yours is by far the sweetest S.O.B. I have ever come across. I have 4 years roofing and 6 1/2 year carpentry under my belt the rest is plumbing and mostly electric...(license included) lol. but yous guys put this thing together with the out most of professionalism. Not sure who was at the top of the roof having a beer and dropping caps but that made me laugh yous guys are more Canadians than ya think ....or the other way around lol. So nice to see you do this with your Dad. I would have love the opportunity to do this with my father. Cherish the moments my friend. By the way you remind me of an old army buddy back in 89 with those long boney chicken legs and those big blue eyes hahaha. Keep up the good work my American friends I will be checking in from time to time. Best ever Free Pallet Cabin five stars Bro.
Canadian Dads on Guard just said everything I was thinking. I share similar building experience and also watch alot of self build videos. The passion that this build went together with Will ensure only quality memories from rhe time spent there. I wish I could have time over to do this with my dad but I am more determined than ever to share something like this with my brother and my kids. Thank you. Oh and well done.😀

Im with you Libby!...I drove big trucks all of my working life and between that and being a father when I was home, I never really had time to learn any other skills. Now im early retired due to an accident, and having to start over at 60.Plus I went through a divorce prior to the accident.I really really could use these kind of skills! as I am wanting to build me a 2 bedroom cabin, but....I guess I will have to keep on trying to learn some more before I tackle that project,but I surely do admire this fellow and his great father! Truely an awsome build and doing it together is even better! God Bless All!

I love the fence siding and I would leave it the way it is. Y’all did a great job on it and best of all it was something you did with your dad. My dad passed in 2011 and my mom in 2012. I miss them greatly so it really warms my heart to see you guys working together.

We're building several sheds out of pallets and reclaimed wood. The pallets you guys got look like they were in great condition. That's a huge bonus. I also agree that the pallet buster tool is valuable. The one I have has a nail remover built into it. That nail remover worked a lot better than I thought it would.

Good father and son project to store away in the happy memories section of the mind. Well done to both of you.
The inside walls I would start at the bottom and go up, by this the idea is to spray foam inside as you go up. I got a 8 x 10 shead that I'm working on and spraying foam along the way. I seen a meathod where someone sprayed foam inside sheet rock in a house, he cut two holes... one to spray in and the other for any excess. Love the idea you and your Dad had on this shead.

Spray in some insulation for warmth
In Canada we call that a house trailer not a camper, a camper to us is what sits in the back of the truck. Nice job on that shed, my wife and I did a addition onto our old log cabin 15' X 25', I got quite a few 3/4" X 4X8' sheets of plywood so that became the floor and outer walls, then I found a good deal on 1/2" 4x8' for the roof, She finally got indoor plumbing a old claw foot tub and I installed a shower into it, then a free toilet, and sink the sink cabinet was also free including Medicne Cabinet. In the corner I installed a stacking washer dryer. I put in a trap door to the crawl space as most of plumbing works were down there and I had some of that between the Bathroom and intrance door such as HWH & Expansion Tank. I installed a pocket door to the bathroom, I Put the toilet in the wrong spot and if the back door was open you could see anyone sitting on the john. Oh well you only got embarassed. Bathroom had a window, hall above Expansion tank also had a decent sized window, two decent sized windows in the Bedroom area as we only had one in the Log section so this now gave us 2 bedrooms. We used the addition for a sitting room in the daytime and a double bed which we could fold to chesterfield until we went to bed. My wife bought some real firm foam about 5" thick when it was still cheap by 75" long cut it in the middle in off angles so when you went to bed u just turned one piece around and it made for a comfortable 54"X75" Bed. I slept better there than down beside the train yard. One side of the roof had a steep slope, the other side not so steep, I was lucky to pick up some new metal roofing which did the job completely which also covered the facia walls under the side eves. I installed out side taps for watering garden. Hard growing items at 3200' but we started it all at home in Greenhouse then transported to the property. Over the years my wife and I restored 5 old homes which taught us to do the plumbing, electrical, and the construction of the addition. Neither of us had any education on construction, we had a friend do most of the plumbing, I upgraded the Kitchen plumbing to the sink. The friend who did the plumbing also helped me with some of the electrical. From our well the water line to the cabin is 7' down to bedrock with a small pump in a 20' deep dug well. It will never freeze as we wrapped in pipe insulation right up to where it comes up to in the Crawl space. The Addition has a Concrete Foundation with rebar, we had a 1947 Cement Mixer that came out from a mine, found in the bush, and had to be perfectly level for the gas motor to run steady could mix a yard at a time. The water was brought to my brother in law and me as we did the heavy work but neighbors pumped water up into 45 gallon drums in their wood Trailer took 3 1/2 drums of Lake water to mix it all. I did all the foundation by eye and levels and string levels. The walls were 6", the Ceiling was 2x4 so we could install Drywall, The roof truss's were built like you built yours the beam was 12" by 17' Doubled up and 2x8' on the down slopes. We installed 40" of pink insulation in the ceiling which I got free, also the walls were same Pink Insulaton I think it was 2x4" and we installed 220 Floor Heaters two in the new bedroom under the windows, one in the bathroom, one in the old bedroom. Took about 3 days for the wood cook stove and the wood insert in the fireplace to get the logs nice and warm and at -40 F we could be quite comfortable. We would blow all the water lines in November so that meant we would bring up 2 - 5 gallon buckets of water for ourselves for those few days.
I installed a 200WPanel then in the Guest Cabin found a 60W panel and the addtion a 75 watt panel and rewired everything from that 200W with BX Cable wiring as there are mice up there and this kept them at bay. Occasional Bat would come in but I did everything possible to keep them our of the cabin but like I said they could squeeze in, they carefully got removed and put back to a Bat house.

The best pallet cabin I've seen. Wonderful job and I love dad's use of the cedar fence. Beautiful!!! Insulation would have been nice and a wood stove would be even better.

I've never seen pallets like those. Well maybe 1 or two. Sure does make things easy when all your lumber is around 12 ft. A little more realistic would be those small pallets that are everywhere.

I remember spending time with my dad..the memories of being strangled and beat senseless in the pitch black basement with the lights turned off and being held underwater in the bathtub, and especially being beat so hard with a boot while I was in the tub that you could read "vibrom" on my skin. Still will not buy anything that has "vibrom" on it to this day...but its beautiful to see you being father&son like it was meant to be.

I have things to do right now but I could not stop watching this. one thing I would consider doing is putting a wrap-around deck because then in the future if you decide to expand it it'll be a little bit easier. Solar cells for the roof

Packing peanuts make good insulation for free
You don't need it really, as long as your building is solid, with the interior boards it will heat nicely.
I was thinking the same thing- even though it's very well built and has interior boards- it would be so much easier to heat and keep the heat in and the cold out with basic insulation between all those boards. It was all just sitting there exposed and begging for insulation before they put the fence wood up (which looks really nice fwiw)! That thing is so small- what would it cost for the small amount of insulation it would have required...

Why burn 5 logs when 1 would do? You will use so much more firewood just because you skimped on insulation.
That's the difference insulation would make also why bake in summer and freeze in winter. Hut would have been better insulated.

Yes it is very cool and I love the rustic look of the interior walls. I kept wishing with the way you built it that you would have insulated the floors, walls and ceiling. I live in a solid wood home that was not insulated as it is solid woods and originally not meant for full time living. In the 80s alot of the windows became double paned prior to our purchase of it. My floor was not insulated ever so it is cold and we need to replace some flooring so we will be insulating the entire floor when we do that. Our home is a two story built like a cabin home. I love that you put good windows in as they are wonderful to keep the heat in. We have 36 windows and unfortunately during the original build, they put in huge single paned windows facing the water which along with the double sliders below means we have to replace them someday with 6 huge windows and 18 sliders that will have to be double paned. The rest of our windows are double paned. The huge ones are so big that to replace them means to take the back off of both stories! Its hard to go back in and fix things once a building is done. I know this is just a hunting cabin but man that insulation would have been so worth slipping in before you put up the interior walls and the floors. It sure looks great and I am not at all criticizing your cool build. What a wonderful Father and son project!!!!

48"x 40" are worth $, every other size you can usually get for free.
I live in Canada and I can get a thousand free pallets a week if I want. I use them just to burn sometime but don't like all the nails in the pit...
