This song was so good! This musical is definitely worth watching, it's soooo good!!! They had cubes with the letters on them and would slip them into holes in the school gate when they said the letter! They climbed and dance on the cubes as they were added!!! :O
I saw the Danish version of the musical in february, and in that the ones singing the song were adult playing "the older students", which gave you a sense that they had been through this hell of a school for so long that they'd practically been brainwashed and robbed of their childhood. Which in turn made it more impactful in the When I Grow Up song where the actual kids started the song, then left the scene with only the adult students left, who then all stood back with relaxed dreamy facial expressions, like they now actually remembered and reminiced of what it was like to be an innocent child. Also in our version they held up signs when they said the letters.
I was in a production of this show and I was big kid #2 and it was my first show I’ve ever done and I remember my line was “ it’s the Trunchbull speciality” but it got canceled bc covid. Altho this was the happiest I’ve been in my whole life. Theater brings me joy everyday and I hope I will get to do more shows in the near future.
The Danish version was just in the Royal Theatre on what we call "The Old Stage", and if the Miracle song didn't blow me away this one most certainly did. I don't know about the English play, but in ours the students singing were played by adults, which gave the sense that they had indeed been trapped in this cage forever and were now about to school the newcomers. The song started with the new kids cautiously approaching the front gate on a dimly lit stage to set the mood, while the older students were scattered all around while standing completely idle until their piece began. Their coreography was absolutely brilliant as they danced in formation and occassionally mocked and "threw" the kids around. All covid restrictions have been lifted in Denmark and did so JUST in time for this play to get on the road.

We had to hold ours up when the letters came up , ensemble also had to say the letters out loud, Disaster.. not in A bad way tho lol.
