    Nice compact setup, I have made a similar setup (but used a bigtower for it, so x2 the space) with 15 HDD`s / 2SSDs,,

      Well there is a lot of wasted spaces in also this one,, but you got to start somewhere.

      i would like to build a high packed but silent version of this just for fun. but i don't have enough drives or an expander laying around...

    If the fans on those drive cages are pulling air in, then the top fan would be best extracting air. You'd want a vent of some kind so the rear fan can pull air across the card from the front. Perhaps even an air intake fan on the front to help out.

    those drives give me 90s Seagate vibes from the external casing, i must admit i want to start collecting more retro servers, but i don't think my Shed, Parents or electrical grid would like me very much. though SGI stuff has been crossing my mind of late

    Which sas expander is this? It looks like an Adaptec AEC-82885T, but i think that one only supports the host system being connected to the internal ports, and not the external ones.
    Would be nice to get this clarified at a later point. I am thinking of doing something similar.

      @@MyPlayHouse It seems like you found some better information than me. I hope it works.
      Another question, Where did you buy it from?
      I need one, but it quite expencive to ship to denmark from most ebay sellers, located in either US or china.

    I'm curious to know the CrystalDiskInfo stats of the drives, especially the ok-ish ones.

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  Рік тому

      :-) I was about to complain that you was ruining my contrationtion, with that pretty girl on you avatar. But then I did 10sec. of investigation. And now think I will,, get to your question instead!!
      I have done a ton of videos of me testing drives (as I get a bunch of Failed/dodgy ones) I have tried different software.. and there is a lot of way better software than what I am doing.. But some of them takes hours or days,, and with 4-10 drives at a time that is to long for me.
      I know the drive is BAD-ish,, I am just looking to see if it´s too bad for me to use for my fun.
      If I am not mistaken I had issues with CrystalDiskInfo,, not seeing my SAS drives. It sees my SATA and my NVMe,, but not the SAS :-/

    I have a side question, I'm trying to see if this would be a valid solution. But, I do need your opinion. I recently started testing out ramdisks which is like a drive on ram, the reason for this is for speed since ram is faster than nvme. I tested it out on my computer using Linux and I only have seen a few GB/s of transfer to ramdisk to ramdisk.
    I was wondering do you know why although in theory ramdisks are fast but in the real world ramdisks are kind of like an nvme ssd? And, have you tried a ramdisk before?
    I can't seem a lot of information about this online.

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  Рік тому

      Yes a ramdisk is very fast,, but you lose the data every time you reboot,, or data needs to be put back in memory. But it might have some uses,, I tried it out while CHIA mining,, did not do much for that.

    I have a question for you, I have a HPE ML350 Gen 9 HP server, it comes with HP SAS 6gbps 300.0 GB in size, I have a friend who gave me 4 Seagate Savvio 10k 6gbps drives. For some reason when I put them in the server, I run the storage administrator on the HP, but I can't format them I can clean them but can't format it. I want to use these inlace of the hp ones. What do I have to do to get them to work?

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  Рік тому

      They might be 520bit formatted and you need 512bit : ua-cam.com/video/5OLdRj-lCkE/v-deo.htmlsi=1EtDmL9H9Q5OnvL1

    What do you store on 70Tb? What would take up that much space? I have about ten years worth of accumulating data, and I am up to a whopping 1.25Tb😊.

    • @MyPlayHouse
      @MyPlayHouse  Рік тому

      All my UA-cam videos takes up about 16TB,,, But this is for my bunker projekt,, You might want to store a lot of stuff, that you would normally just redownload from the internet.

    • @frankwalder3608
