    Angel sharks are not generally dangerous. They do have teeth though and if provoked their bite can result in a painful injury.The Pacific Angel Shark (Squatina californica) grow to an adult size of about 1.5 m (4.9 ft) They like to post up on flat sandy bottoms where they use their large rounded pectoral fins to bury themselves in the sand and wait for a meal. The pacific angel sharks primarily eat fish and squid, waiting patiently on the sea floor for approaching prey. Once their prey is close enough it is ambushed with a powerful upward thrust of the head and then snatched in their protrusible jaws.

      I must say, this was a pretty epic dive for me! It was my first time to see a wild angel shark in the ocean while freediving! I was fascinated by these magnificent animals and curious as to their temperament. That is why it looks like I'm getting a little touchy in some parts of the video, It was purely a matter of education and respect for me, I would never hurt any marine mammal or animal! Ever! I am always the one who is fighting to help protect them ^_^ I love the ocean for this very reason! Every time I jump in the ocean and begin swimming underwater, it is a unique experience with so much to see and learn in a whole new underwater world! Pretty epic! Ahhh I love it! haha I'm getting stoked just talking about it! haha
      Check out all of my free diving videos on my youtube channel! I post new videos every week ^_^

      haha no it's not magic, but it does feel like another world when you are down there! ***** I can hold my breath for a solid 3 minutes while free diving but I am trying to improve! I want to be able to get 4-5 minute breath holds by this next summer! I love free diving because it is as much a mental sport as it is a physical sport! You have to learn how to relax underwater and stay calm, then you can stay down there longer ^_^
      Thanks for the comment!

      ***** Sorry for the late reply my friend. To be honest this message got buried but I remembered chatting with you and I had to go back and search for it. haha I found it though and I just watched the video! I touched on this subject last week with *****. He showed me a video he produced on Fukushima, I'll share the link.
      On the topic,
      To be completely honest, It saddens me more than anything. My heart goes out to the families living in Japan right now in close proximity to the plant. Then I begin to think about my unborn children and their generation..
      There were two things that really stood out to me in that video Ahmet,
      1)Japan scientists in Fukushima are obviously not telling us the truth. We need to all be honest here so we can do our damn finest to fix the problem! Like that woman in the video said, "They told us it would take 40 years to clean this up", That is not true, by definition of scientific law.
      2) Umm.. Yaayy, I have cancer! I already knew that was coming.
      What gets me is that they have been dumping nuclear waste in the ocean for over a year!?! It's absolutely ludicrous, but then again Japan also kills dolphins..Which is even more ludicrous in my opinion.
      that's a different topic though.
      So yeah, I'm going to go ahead and stay away from Tuna for now..
      I have a lot of questions and I'm assuming I'm not the only one. I need to do some researching now. Perhaps our good friend ***** may shed some light on the subject?
      Who, what, why didn't anyone do something!
      Or was it that no one knew this was taking place? They probably all knew but didn't want to tell the public. (Ever seen Armagedon?! The public saves the day!)
      Overall, the crisis in Fukushima saddens me, but I am not fearful.
      I trust in God ^_^ What good does it do to run around in fear?
      Now slow down there on the comment box, I'm not saying we should sit back and relax God will do everything for us. haha no We need to be smart and work together on this! Form a group of most knowledgeable intellectuals, scientists, whoever is best qualified. Obviously everyone is under qualified because this has never happened before. (It reminds so much of the movie "Armageddon"!)
      Anyways, form a group, figure out how to secure that leak, and most importantly, STABILIZE the cores! We need to have that on lock! Not just hope we don't have an earthquake! Bottom line, it is imperative that they assemble the right team and take action! Or else call in the Avengers!
      Cheers,
      Troy MacDonald

      haha seriously! Does anybody have their number? Because we are really going to need it if we don't do act fast! Thanks for the comment Ahmet, and thank you for sharing that video with me!

      I am actually a new subscriber and this is one of the first videos I viewed. Not to under value your other content in any way. I'm loving the channel. I'm new to filming, and I am learning a lot by watching your videos.

      Right on Nick C thanks for the comment! I'm stoked you really like this video man, it's my brothers favorite too! Glad to hear you are diggin' my channel! It makes me very happy to read that you are learning from my videos, my main goal for all of my work is that it may inspire people! If you ever have any questions about the ocean, filming, animals, or anything like that, please feel free to ask! I taught a video class last summer while I was living on Catalina Island so I have some experience with helping people. I would teach kids how to use gopros, how to storyboard, how to shoot, and how to edit.

    Are Pacific angelsharks found close to the shore in Laguna Beach? I can't remember any snorkeler finding one and telling me about it. They might be around but during the day they are mostly inactive, buried in the sand and hard to see. Their mouth is in front rather than underneath like in sharks and rays. That's convenient since they attack upwards from the sand.

  • @TroyMacDonald
    @TroyMacDonald  11 років тому

    I suppose that angel sharks could be found closer to shore, but usually they are in about 30 ft of water. I was at about 35 ft while filming this video. I have never seen one in Laguna though, they are pretty rare and very illusive. These are truly magnificent sharks! I am grateful to have had this amazing opportunity to observe and interact with these beautiful creatures, I really learned a lot about them!

    2 people in my family have OCD too, but I don't think I have it. However I am extremely ADHD! It is funny how I do that underwater! I'm a pretty weird guy though. This angel shark video is the only time I've noticed me doing that underwater though. haha It really stood out to me and made me laugh! I honestly think I was just super relaxed & focused underwater. This was my first time to see angel sharks while free diving! I was super relaxed but also alert underwater. If that makes sense?

  • @TroyMacDonald
    @TroyMacDonald  11 років тому

    No it would not! It would be pretty hard to step on an angel shark though, they are usually found in about 30-40 feet of water. They camouflage super well in the sand too so you kind of have to get a good breath hold and then just swim along the seafloor underwater looking for them. I love Angel sharks now, they are so cool! I think it is so cool how they have their mouths in front so they can strike upwards at insane speed! They're like half bat ray, half shark, all awesome! ^_^

  • @TroyMacDonald

    Haha I guess I could! Don't worry kids, these beaches are safe!
    This was my first time to ever see an angel shark & I was absolutely fascinated by them! I was examining there behavior & wanted to see how they would react to my presence.
    I could also say I fought an octopus for my Gopro! ^_^

    The Angel shark is apparently a bit more dangerous than Leopard sharks or Swell sharks.

  • @pukulu
    @pukulu 11 років тому

    You did fine in any case. At the end the shark was rather indifferent to your presence, which is the best you can hope for.

      Cool, blue water lots of chum, head mounted gopros, pelagic action and maybe we can get some cool footage of some very big sharks, even bigger than the one in the vid of mine!

      @TroyMacDonald  11 років тому +1

      You have no idea how fabulous that sounds to me Randy Boisa I have been wanting too do that for so long but I don't have a boat and my gear is ghetto! haha I do have a good camera and light though, every pay check I get I put right back into buying dive gear. haha I'm getting super excited! =0D

      @TroyMacDonald  11 років тому +1

      The bigger the shark the better baby! Randy Boisa I wanted to go out chuming to try and find a bigger shark to dive with but it was way to sketchy on just a paddle board. haha a boat will be much easier! and probably a lot safer too

      Troy MacDonald Hey man, I live in Cali, Don't worry about your gear, I dive with a 3m wetsuit just because I don't enjoy jellyfish stings, Got a 1.5 mm wetsuit to, all the weights you can imagine, we look the same size so there is no problem, extra gun and suit goes to you, just want a free dive safe diver to be in the water with me to watch my 6 and I will watch yours, who knows maybe we will get some incredible footage, well with blue water and chum we will, looking forward to it bro!
