The Audi RS5 is a mainstay in the world of sporty coupes but it's gotten a bit soft lately. Does a new suspension, brakes, and steering box nudge it closer to the M3/M4?

Ah 911 coffee and countach coffee!
Factor meals are good. But they're full of cholesterol so I had to stop the service. Super convenient though.
I miss this classic format and I personally prefer it over some of the other recent videos. Great to see Matt and Zack together in the car again as well!
Agreed, both is the perfect combo
Matt thanks to you both for the presentation. Your presentation of the 2013AudiRS5 led me to purchase one. I never disabled the esp just to not go crazy. I haven't driven the newer RS5. I still love the lines of the early RS5. Lastly, thank you for the presentation. Good watching you evolve over the years. Always great presentations.
THIS plus 80-100 HP would be perfection!
I think the old c63 had ceramics on the front only too. Always thought it was weird but does make sense!
Yeah Mercedes did this as well
Yup they did u beat me commenting hehe
Bring back the One Takes with viewer-built cars!!!! I miss the mods, the convo, the sketchiness. it was such a good formula cause it was just normal ppl talking about something they love
I do too. I thought Zack was fixing to take over that format.
Would love to see the viewer built cars but I know they aren’t coming back for the simple fact that they weren’t getting paid to do viewer built cars (outside of $$ for views). I’m sure they are getting a nice check from these auto brands plus I’m sure they get to keep the cars for a weekend maybe even longer & they are still getting money from views still.
That is simply not realistic to survive on. Also dealing and scheduling with other people takes a lot of energy and time.
Yes it was great, but also try to look at it from the other side.
No
Zack does them occasionally, Matt's done unless they are special opportunity or friends of the show. To be fair he did 100s of one takes and has driven nearly everything available stateside.
The “i’m gonna leave it in. And this in” is gold. Love seeing you two together
I factory-ordered this same car (Ascari Blue coupe) in 2023 (1 of 8 in US) before the MSRP increase, and have absolutely enjoyed it since April 2023. I already upgraded the factory sway bars to Eurocode Tuning w/solid endlinks. With an 80 treadwear rating, I am using the Pirelli Corsas on the Competition Wheels for HPDE usage, and I replaced them for daily driving with Vorstiener forged wheels w/Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4s. Fun fact - the rear brakes can be upgraded to CCBs for just under $9k USD via a European supplier. As for more power, 034 Motorsports has just released their Stg 1 flash tune for the '23 ECU, with the TCU flash release date TBD. A Wagner IC & radiator upgrade is my next upgrade.
Great video! Really love the step up to production and quality!
This Audi looks awesome! Thank you for the great review guys! "allegedly could triple the speed limit"
That audi is ugly bro it looks like a Kia or a Hyundai sonata stop it and it sounds terrible 😅
@@atarijones5056you talk about Audi is ugly with one of the most hideous cars ever made as your profile pic😂
One *could*!
I love Audi interiors, seeing one always makes me bummed out when I get in my GTI.
Lovely video, the old rs5/4 B8 generation v8 was naturally aspirated, it’s an FSI engine not TFSI 😊
truly a great review, 10 years of refinment has brought out the best in TST in this review tbh, bravo guys!
Why everyone is soooo sick with acceleration these days? Man this one does in 3.3, oh this one in 3.9. There’s much more than that when it comes to character it self. Power delivery, do you really use all the power band? Can you really enjoy and open up the engine all the way to red line? These cars are mainly used as a daily and clearly been these fast you just use 30% of the power, all the torque down there you can’t even listen to the engine. Is good to sometimes thing about what a real passionate feel older N/A engines provided. Where you can listen, enjoy and feel that the whole engine delivers. With out going stupidity and unsafely fast day to day.
For $100k I think I will go with the LC for that V8 and the exotic interior and exterior.
LC is soooo slow though compared to the Germans
Zero-style twonk!
@@Supremxcyxiit really is - my business partner has one and their G63 is way faster lol. Plus that horrendous touchpad thing is a no go. Just get a used 911 turbo for $100k and be happy.
@@Supremxcyxi Who cares its a cruiser, missing the point
LC is much slower to the repair shop for sure, but she is the car to own. Those cars quick to the repair shop are only suitable for people who want to blow away the extra cash with a lease.
Just about every channel forgets the Giulia QV exists. It exists and it was just updated for MY24.
The RS5 "screaming battleship" video you put out is what sold me on the RS5 all those years ago. One of the best cars I've ever driven, and I miss it and the v8.
Nice to see one where you're back in the car together again! So much better.
PS: Might want to update the Off the Record card though since it says discount until May 2023.
Thanks for bringing this format back!
The heck with the Audi, Matt you look happy and in good shape. That’s great to see!
I noticed this in the last OneTake I watched, but forgot to comment. Good job, Matt!
Matt fanclub... Damn I thought that first reply was genuine and it made me happy, then I noticed it's a bot. Booboo!!
@@PreludeDude That's how they get you! UA-cam needs to get better SPAM filters.
Excellent video, Zach and Matt. As a listener since the very beginning, it’s been fun to watch you two evolve, and elevate your art form. And just because I like you to idiots, I watched every single effing advertisement without skipping or fast forwarding. XOXO!
Great video, really enjoy the videos with both of you.
Why I love the Manual! BMW M4! Porsche 911 with manual .
The Audio is on point! Wow idk what you did but it’s crystal clear
Great review guys.
People that buy the RS5 don’t want a track car.
I own the coupe (first RS5), all black on black and love it.
Very comfortable (massage seats are great), loads of room (no kids) and lots of positive comments.
Real head turner.
Tested by Wheels Magazine 0-100klm in 3.7 seconds.
It wants for nothing.
For an extra $16k, it'd be nice to have more power (perhaps 480 - 500hp instead of 444hp) and keep mag-ride. Coils are nice, but not at $100 grand. But the rest of the changes are nice, especially holding redline in manual-mode!
Agreed. However if people are really getting 0-60 times in 3.2sec, Audi may have bumped the power without telling anyone, given the cost(s) to recert a new engine/mapping.
@@colnagog6026 That's a really good point. Also worth noting that this Competition Package also includes some noteworthy weight savings, especially to unsprung mass with the carbon ceramic brakes, and I wonder if that could explain the difference too. Maybe a review will get these cars side-by-side on a dyno to check!
I think Audi understand its customer base well. Not a lot of Audi drivers are that hardcore into track days, instead they just want to be able to rip all these horses basically all the time under any condition safely without too much driver input. I believe a nice set of tough adjustable coils would be better and more reliable than mag-ride for the long run if you do a ton of canyon runs and they do cost a good bit 2-5k if you want a nice set of aftermarket ones. The ceramic brakes costs 5-7k.
tbh most Audi buyers probably want that 16k to be towards appearance, both in and out, upgrade rather than performance. I just don't think a lot of Audi buyers buy it for power in the car meets I go to. They mostly want a sleeper that can smoke a Ferrari on the highway if it ever comes to that.
@@NBASFAN Fair point about Audi drivers and the lack of proper track time (as an Audi driver myself, I also don't track my car). But pointing out the lack of Audi track time, and then still defending the use of coilovers over mag-ride is odd. Given that most of us Audi drivers don't track our cars, having a suspension set-up I can adjust at the push of a button makes more sense, whereas a coilover set-up is what a track enthusiast would want/need.
And if Audi drivers want a "sleeper that can smoke a Ferrari on the highway", that would mean they would want more power, which this 16k competition package doesn't provide. You also say Audi drivers want aesthetic upgrades, but then say they want a sleeper.
That's quite a few contradictions in a single comment.
@@DarthChewie I understand you're a little confused there. Let me clarify.
I'm saying the 16k should be going towards appearance mods.
Coilovers over mag-ride is more reliable, I didn't really said which one is better. Many mag ride owner will tell you the mag ride eventually needs to be replaced in a few years and they do cost quite a fortune. STILL I didn't say which is more preferred or better.
As for the sleeper part. 0-60 in 3.4s smokes quite a bit of Ferrari's if you haven't noticed... And spending another 1.5k for a stage 2 tune you could hit high 2s...
I don't see the contradiction, but now I feel really stupid actually clarifying myself over a UA-cam comment. 💀
I’ll NEVER sell my 4.2l RS5
V8 forever
Forget Lamborghini and Ferrari(Sorry, someone will read this and revoke my Sicilian family card), But the B8.5 Audi RS5 is truly the car to end all cars!!!! I still love the looks and Sound!! You sir, are pretty lucky to own one!!!
@@Kiss__Kissthe Audi might as well be a civic compared to a Ferrari … what a pointless comparison. More apt to compare with Alfa Giulia Quadrifoglio.
@@joeracer302 Alfa? Really? I'd get better reliability from a pig.. "Audi may as well be a Civic compared to a Ferrari?" We're talking about sound, and looks, rawness... NOT status symbols. It is you, whom knows nothing about Automobiles, I'm afraid.
Heavy & bloated but sounds really good....the car version of Lizzo
maintenance sucks as mileage goes up.
Fixed steering ratio rack: it's good to see enthusiasts FINALLY wake up and realize that a progressive steering rack is a bad idea for a sports car. I knew that the moment I heard about it the first time.
loved this video awesome work yall
Great Vid! Format is getting more cohesive, post-production tweaking will really get it dialed in
I will say from a looks perspective, this car is absolutely stunning compared to the ugly M3/M4
Still one of the nicest looking cars on the road at any price.
Nah...B8.5 RS5 sh*ts on this design all day everyday...
gonna be honest. when zack was introduced to the channel i just wasnt feeling it (no offense Zack) and I drifted away to other channels. And honestly I wasn't keeping up but right now what y'all are doing has brought me back to my favorite car review channel on youtube The mother****** Smoking Tire. Y'all are killing it! peace and love
The worlds greatest engine, that 4.2 TFSI*
Until it comes time to service basically anything. It has 4 timing chains, mounted at the rear of the motor. It's astronomically insane.
They know this dw, they aren't gonna bring that up when Audi has loaned them the car obviously.
Its a good engine but far from the greatest, reliability aside.
I just saw a pic of that rear.. dear God. Makes my n54 seems like a piece of cake!
These are not the kind of car guys who actually do their own work on their vehicles. I feel your not a real car enthusiast, unless you can actually do, and want to do at least the basics of car maintenance. Plus, i dont really trust anybody else with my level of attention and detail to do the job.
@@smooth_ops2942years ago I also realized that unless you're going to a good specialist, you can do better than most so called mechanics or garages just by taking a little time and watching a diy youtube vid
Love these takes!! This or a 2020 GSF?
Nice to see the old format again 😃
Love the Inirtial D visual reference from around 18 mins. Drift marks as far as the eye can see
great review. On a seperate note- is that a Grand Seiko on the wrist?
9:53 aaaand this is when Zack quits 🤣
The joke fell flat but was still funny.
Didn't get the joke , what does it mean?
I'm glad you guys are doing the videos together again.
Together again? They have been doing this for a while now.
Nice review. Love those Audi’s!
Matt - I have a very serious question... what watch are you wearing in this video??? I can't quite make it out. Looks good with the blue strap!
17:17 Some really nice B-Roll shots of the landscape in this one guys. 👍🏽
Great video as always
Audi s5 sport back or rs5 - is it worth the extra cost and harsher ride as a daily? Thank you
I really like the new production but I also miss the small video window with the front road view for the whole drive.Solid video though.
It’s also a lot prettier than M3/4 (subjectively), and for me, for this type of enthusiast car, that counts for a lot. Nice video guys. 👍👍
I totally agree. Zack seems to clap on about BMWs, but they are butt-ugly in my opinion. As you point out looks are important, especially for this type of enthusiast car.
Too bad it has AWFUL residual...unlike a BMW.
I dont think the brakes are that weird. A lot of cars run discs up front and drums in the rear and i think thats a whole lot more weird than this setup
The fires in the background 😳
It's like comparing analogue to digital. In some instances digital is better but not always and analogue has that feel to It where you feel involved too
Good video, but can there be little more views out the front? Im a fan of multiple angles but you guys have great roads and front view gives a good sense of speed
This is definitely a cool Audi but man do I miss that RS5 from the first one take. That sound is unbeatable. Also, glad you have the coupe, it's the only way an RS5 should only be imo. Great video guys!
Great vid!
The barber shop free beer joke got me good
This Audi looks awesome!
I love it when you guys do German cars 🚙 😊 I only buy German cars because they drive great and the only bad thing is they cost more to run 😢
I guess you guys got better cameras. I can see Zack's face like never before. He always seemed a little younger to me but now I can see his face / age. Sorry Zack lol
I always wondered that as well LOL
Zack is 40, he looks good for his age considering the average American is a meat sack filled with mayonnaise.
Mercedes used to offer the CCB's as a Front-Only option for the 2015+ C-Class, I believe.
7:00 Not sure if that is an actual change with the competition package. I believe all RS5s of this generation bounce off the limiter and won't auto upshift. I have a 2019 and it definitely doesn't upshift for you.
The best generation for these S5/RS5 was the B8/B8.5. The 4.2 V8 was special. These new Audi’s are quick but lack character and lost their timeless look. A lot of brands are having this issue right now. I’ll stick to the old school.
Totally agreed here
Can't wait for the $100k Civic!
Great video thank you :)
Matt, is that watch a Scurffa Dive Watch.
At least it’s a coupe.
You guys together have great chemistry like a Californian Throttle House...
The 2022 RS6 rear carbon ceramic brakes are a direct bolt on. I put them on my 2021 Ascari RS5
What's up with the fire in the video?
On RS cars in "manual" mode it will stay in whatever gear you want. Its been like that with my two RS models (RS3, RS5 sportback). FYI.
Yaaay!!! Classic one/two takes!!!!!!!
Why couldn't they implement a device like was on the old teins that had a servo on top of each coilovers to electronically manually adjust the dampers... I think that would have been trick, and then leave a little clear window over each adjuster so you can see it move and confirm settings, etc.
I wonder if The suspension is out sourced by KW, the kit looks exactly like mine.
You mean s65, not s54 when referring to high revving BMW engines.
S65 was in the e9x m3 with 8500rpm redline
I've been cross-shopping this (sportback), and an M3 manual (because manual)...got to drive one of these a few weeks ago, out of state, but unfortunately on "city streets", so no chances to get up to speed. I was looking for the steering changes/coilovers to be more compelling vs. standard RS5. I found the steering in "Sport"(?) to be weird/gummy feeling, coming from a GT4, unfortunately now gone, but was better in "Normal/Comfort". Apparently if you can get the pack without ceramics (no definitive reason why/how from (3) different dealers, in (2) different states), total package cost is only $10k. Hoping Carbahn can get a tune out soon. I believe Mr. Dinan was shooting for 650-700hp. I tried to get confirmation of suspension settings, but whatever the factory settings were, car felt firmer, yet still compliant over mangled roads. More so than 981 GT4, with custom firmer damper settings than stock.
I think the reality of today is if you want the best steering feel you have to stop buying cars newer than like 2013.
@@TheBucketOfTruthyep. BMW electric power steering has been especially bad, and it seems they have no intentions of changing it after a decade of complaints
Don't sleep on the Caddy Blackwings, both available with manuals.
@@mattflores6078 Yeah and I thought the C7 Vette and my brother's Sierra Denali truck had pretty good electric steering. I imagine the Caddy could also be decent.
@@mattflores6078 Not sleeping on the Caddys...just no affinity for cars with no curves.
Love the review and new format! Do not get the 4.2 love though. Biggest automotive disappointment of my life was neighbour’s 4.2 R8. Yeah, it revs and sounds. But absolutely NOTHING happens. So, so slow.
Can‘t imaging the old RS5 being more engaging, esp since it‘s direct competitor was the glorious AMG 6.2.
The 2014 c63 used to offer ceramics only in the front I believe.
What watch is Matt wearing?
Those wheels are some of the best OEM wheels available these days.
Keen for the rs6 perf review
Still do understand why AUDI can not make that car in a convertible like BMW does for people who like to just drive and not race but want the power
Your watch brand?
Just replaced my F-Type with a 2023 RS5 with every main option ticked except 20in wheels (prefer the look of the std 19s) & the carbon roof. Sports suspension plus is absolutely essential with the standard ride set-up.
Just got it? Price?
Great review, but can we get more front facing footage, please?
9:50 now i wanna know where Zack f*cked up in life 😄😄😄 that was a funny part in the video 👍
The rear brakes can easily wear out quicker on an S5 when driven daily because of things radar cruise control etc...!
This car reminds me of the saying, "I'm not here for a lap time. I'm here for a good time"
Anyone buying a fast car doesn't want the looser and that what that is a third Placer atleast it usto sound great now it just looks like a Hyundai sonata stop the nonsense
ehhh Audi is usually neither of those compared to BMW (unless there's a 5 cyl)
On the opposite end of the styling spectrum there’s BMW, but for the first few minutes of this video I thought you were reviewing the 2018 RS5. They haven’t done much to change the exterior
No, there is no artificial sounds in Audi like it’s in BMW M series 👍
Yes
You guys MUST make a shirt that reads ''Digital Farts''
But Matt, who buys a coupe if they need the back seats? My argument versus your comment on the RS5 Comp over the LC500 due to need of the back seats is that if you buy a coupe, then primarily most buyers won't need back seats for passengers. Otherwise, I believe that both LC and RS5 have usable back seats for storage. I'd still prefer the LC due to design, noise, and better GT feel.
Still taking that high revving 4.2 all day.
9:52 lmfao you guys are clowns. Literally dying at the spontaneity
Check out this sweet Audi rs5 while there's a fire somewhere in the background lol
I've had a rental a5 this whole week and I drive it like you guys drive this RS5 lol. It's a really slick machine!! I can only imagine all the improvements you guys mention on this car here!! Rides so smooth and the standard power is very decent. I also agree with the comment about it being better than an Alfa. I had a Giulia last time and it's a decent car but so many things I didn't like about it as well. The seating position and floorboard height was a real ankle killer for me!
Apparently they aren't aware of the rear main seal leak issue common to the 4.2. I know all too well. I am glad to see that engine gone.
15:38. First predictive camera-pan I’ve seen in a car video…maybe ever. How’d you guys do that?
Is that the Ruiz Seiko?
This or CT4 V Blackwing?
You never think about us that live in the snow
Did not know Audi had character
If it takes $16k to make the car interesting, you might as well just get the regular comfy one and buy a $16k used Miata on the side.
Really one of the greatest sounding engines ever? I hate when car reviewers say that.
