WINTER mountain photography - A PERFECT day in Scotland!

- In this (rather long!) video I go hiking with my friend Joe up Beinn Bhan in the Northwest Highlands of Scotland after a fresh snowfall. We are treated to a full day of landscape photography, from waterfalls and lochans at the mountain's base to sweeping summit views from the ridge itself. It was one of the best days of photography I have ever had, so I tried to squeeze it into one video. There is, as usual, a lot of compositional discussion.

Did your vlog run on for too long? Nope. Not for a second. What a day in the hills for photography. No wonder you were so satisfied with your days work. Thank you for taking us along with you.
Wow what an incredible day. Direct sunlight but filtered through thin clouds is just the best. You guys really tapped into the magic.
Thanks, it was pretty ideal conditions, I cant complain!
Your passion for the mountains, though always balanced and unexaggerated, is evident and contagious . And what a day you had . Epic photography
Thanks as ever Howard!
Awesome!
Alex, I've been following you for quite a while but this is by far my favorite of video of yours. The atmosphere, the compositions, the conditions are absolutely stunning. And you articulated the scenes perfectly. Congrats mate, keep up the good work. Cheers.
Thanks a lot Ahmet, it’s definitely one of my favourite days!
Super stuff, brilliant light and wonderful pictures.
Thank you Andy!
Wow! Really incredible….lovely video and fantastic photos……Thanks Alex!
Thanks Renee! Hope you’re keeping well! I’m currently above Icidi Pass in the Drakensberg!
Excellent video and imagery there Alex and no wonder you had great big smile through the video.
Thank you :)
Some wonderful scenes, I enjoy these new videos where you talk through your compositions. Good luck hunting for the new project Alex.
Fabulous video Alex. Your enthusiasm and joy during the day really hit home! Looking forward to more in the future.
Thanks very much Richard!
What a wonderful series of images. It looks too tough for me to tackle this but will go and photograph the waterfalls and the first Lochan the next time I am in Torridon. I am unlikely to get conditions like these but can always hope.
It’s worth a trip even to see those cascades.
Got to love them views. Thanks for sharing.
Another fabulous video. The image at 09h00 makes my spirit soar!!
Now that was a perfect day Alex, great shots as well!!
Thanks for sharing this amazing experience of yours Alex. Really great conditions and images as well!
Thanks so much :)
Just Wow ! That really does look like a once in a lifetime kind of day. I also have to say that, after recently discovering your channel, I like your straightforward, understated delivery and concentration on just the photography (compared with some of the other youtube photographers).
Thanks, I just wish it had a slightly broader appeal. There is no doubt UA-cam likes people to get overexcited!
Excellent video. Thank you.
Thanks Steve
A perfect day indeed.
I could have quite happily watched another hour of this walk. What a superb day out in the Mountains you two had. Incredible scenery 😍
That’s very kind, it was a fantastic day!
Wonderful video; really enjoyed watching it; thanks Alex!
Thanks Chris!
Well done Alex. Providing commentary on your artistic choices in the field is fantastic and much appreciated.
I’m not sure it’s quite what UA-cam wants, but it makes sense to me :)
Stunningly beautiful scenery and magic conditions. I think I would have photographed it quite differently, but there is no right or wrong to this. Thanks for taking us along. Just great!
My pleasure, thanks for commenting
what a day, and some great photos
Hi Alex - thanks for posting. This is one of the best photography videos I've ever seen on UA-cam! A great story of the day, and excellent explanation of your composition thoughts. I particularly loved the pano at about 22.04, but all the pictures were fantastic! I'm off to Morar for a week tomorrow, so hope to get a pic or two...
Thanks Chris, glad you enjoyed it! Enjoy your trip!
I'll happily see more like this please!
If only I had days like this more often!
Thanks for taking us along. Very beautiful images and enjoyed hearing your though process.
My pleasure George :)
Fantastic day out with incredible scenery.
I wish you from my heart to expand much further into social media Alex. As this will help you grow and expand. For what you are doing and the way you are doing you're well deserved
🙏👌💪❤️🔥
Thanks a lot. I will cross my fingers!
Incredible Alex! What an exciting day with absolutely breath taking conditions. You must be very happy with the images you've captured. Well worth the effort and conditions! Keep up the great work and videos! Cheers.
Thanks Alan, and yes very pleased!
Amazing conditions and scenery. Great work! 👌🤩
Thanks a lot Lenn
Another top notch video, Alex! The effort you put in to achieve unique shots is admirable, and you are far and away the best UA-cam photographer in terms of your clear articulation of your thoughts regarding compositional considerations!
Thanks a lot Ian, that’s very kind!
Stunning landscape! Very well made video. Looking forward to watching your other videos. My favorite image is the panorama at 22:04
Thank you very much :)
Stunning landscape and photographs that are simply amazing. Nice work. Very much enjoyed your video.
Wolfgang
Thanks you very much Wolfgang
Oh yeah, this is the stuff i crave. I live in switzerland, and yeah we have mountains too ( ;) ) but it's almost always packed with tourists so it's hard to get to spots that aren't that crowded..
Ah, Switzerland isn’t so bad ;)
Absolutely amazing images Alex (that final pano of Torridon, just wow). I happened to hike that exact route on my first visit to Applecross at the end of October :-) Sadly there was no snow, but those ridges were some of the most awesome I've seen in Scotland, a truly spectacular mountain. Looking forward to more from this area as you work towards your next book.
Cheers Brendan, it’s certainly an amazing mountain but can also be quite tricky to photograph well!
@@alexnail agreed, you gotta go there in the right conditions it seems 🙂👍🏻
Wow!! What an incredible day out in the mountains. Fantastic photography Alex.
Ham, cheese and coleslaw! A favourite of mine when out for photography too. The coleslaw adds just the perfect amount of moisture back into the sandwich 😁
Ha yes, it’s a quick sandwich to put together too! Thanks Owen
Excellent video Alex, this is the sort of content I love. Very much enjoying your narrative and thought processes on your creative journey through the scenes, and your persistence through the ever changing conditions - very inspiring! Would you consider adding focal length / aperture to some shots to help visualise the technical elements?
Thanks Gareth. I’ve gone back and forth on adding that information to be honest. Whilst I know some people will just like it as an extra bit of information, I think by including the settings you give them a significance. I think it’s generally better to teach technique to beginners separately so that they don’t think that there is anything special about 26mm f11 ISO100 1/10 for example!
Fantastic vid and images Alex. This mountain always fascinated me on my early trips to Scotland. So nice to see it in detail!! Quite a day!!!
Thanks Jon, yeah it was a really special day for sure!
Fantastic production!
Fantasic viewing, Alex. Some pretty epic photos in there, especially towards the end.
Thanks Neil, hope you’re keeping well!
Wonderful stuff Alex. Always enjoy your videos, so different to others. Keep them coming.
Thanks very much gov!
Good to see you back at it Alex. Inspiring stuff as always!
Cheers Brian!
Fantastic conditions and photos , specially the last with rainbow.
Cheers Stig, and yes that was very lucky!
Fantastic images - thanks for bringing us along!
Thank you Larry!
18:59 - now that is a proper wilderness shot! Cant wait to get up there with Phil in a matter of weeks. Wondering why you were saying thid might have been the most productive Scotland day in ten years at this point of the video I am beginning to understand.
Amazing work! Lovely scenes and images 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Charles! Hope you’re doing well 💪
lucky you...! and well done once again. I do envy you🤗
Ps: I'm lucky enough to own your latest book, with a little help from my love.
Thanks to your partner for picking up a copy of the book!
What a day!! And you certainly did it justice.
Thanks Annette!
just WOW nothing more to say Alex.
Thanks a lot Mick!
That's actually pretty amazing video sir Alex 🙋🏻♂️ very enjoyable and pleasant to watch u got your self another subscriber 😁
Really glad that you enjoyed it :)
An amazing adventure! How god was it to get clearer skies up top after the moody scenes from below? So fortunate!
Yeah I suppose that’s true. Although to look at it another way I had two good photography days in four weeks!
hello! love you're videos. Im a beginning photographer and I'm wondering your opinion on which camera I should get. Currently it's between the Canon r50 and the Nikon d750. I like the canon because of it's modern technology, beginner friendly interface, and it's sharp canon colors, but I like the Nikon because it has a larger ecosystem of lenses, it's full frame, and it would challenge me to take more time with my photos. I would also like a versatile camera that is good at videos, but I also don't need super high resolution 4k whatever specs. I'm also into landscape photography, animal photography, street photography, but not quite so much portrait photography. Anyways, thanks for taking the time to read this, and I'm also open to other suggestions in that price range!
the image from the top near the end (not the pano) is i think the 1 keeper from the lot. Nice work.
I’ll get rid of the rest then ;) Which one do you mean?
@@alexnail hahaha no i didnt mean it like that :) Top of the mountain, around 23:45
Bloody amazing mate. Some of the most beautiful images I've ever seen. A few years before the book ... really?
Well it just takes a long time to put together a body of work I am happy with! Really glad you enjoyed it!
What kind of camera body and lens did you use for these photographs?
I’ll start by saying that I could have taken these images with an SLR or mirrorless camera produced in the last 10 years. But I used a Canon R5 and 16-35 and 70-200 lenses
@@alexnail your work looks absolutely amazing.
