The thing with the basic Distortion+ design (which I'm pretty sure preceded the DOD 250, historically) is the manner in which it increases gain. By using the "ground leg" to increase gain, instead of the feedback loop (as the Rat and TS-9/SD-1 do) it *CUTS* low end as gain is increased. At minimum gain both the DOD and MXR pedals are flat down to around 7hz. At max gain, however, both of them roll off bass starting around 720hz.
Why did they do this? I don't know for certain, but my sense is that it was simply a lucky mistake. Keep in mind that at the time the Dist+ came out, pickup choices tended to be PAF-style humbucker and single coil. There were no "noiseless" SC, dual rails, "stacked" P90s, or any other sort of SC form-factor pickup that rejected hum, and not very many players had noise gates. So if you didn't play a humbucker-equipped guitar, more gain meant more audible hum. By rolling off more and more bass as you cranked the gain, the 60hz hum would not be amplified nearly as much as the mids and highs. So not only does the pedal sound "brighter", but the hum was not objectionable for SC users.
Another thing with the basic design is that the Dist+/250 designs are effectively "double clippers". That is, they provide more gain than the chip itself can achieve at +9v, and then feed that no-more-headroom-clipped op-amp output to a pair of diodes (germanium for MXR, and silicon for DOD, which accounts for their max volume difference). So the guitar is clipped once by the chip itself, and a second time by the diodes; double clipping. You can test it yourself by disconnecting one end of the clipping diodes. Turn the gain up even a smidgen and all cleanliness will disappear.

There are other 250 style pedals out there that are much more similar than the 50/50 and the grey channel, in fact in relation to the vast pool of 250 circuits on the market they are very disimilar because the 50/50 doesn't give any options for aftermarket/mod style clipping options.

As others have noted, the Mosky D250 definitely has a volume pot on the inside (no tone pot). I am a "set-it-and-forget-it" pedal user, so I love that there isn't another knob to bump, but I absolutely respect the disappointment in not having readily accessible knobs. Mosky does the same with their original Timmy Clone, the TM (bass, treble and volume trim pots). I own their other Timmy clone, the MM Silver, which has all the knobs on top but I find that pedal doesn't sound nearly as good. I haven't tried the Mosky D250X (with accessible knobs) but I wonder if it rises to the same sound quality as the D250.

I usually use my gold reissue DOD 250 differently from how you demo them here. I am going for the More is More sound when I use this pedal. The Maestro maxed out both controls and ran it into a crunchy JMP amp, instead of a nice round bottomed clean tone. They are a different beast when used like that. Not easy to do though. The main thing is that even with the noiseless HS3 pups and a Boss NS-2 they can hiss a lot when maxed out. If the guitar is picking up more noise than usual they can even squeal like a pig. I am old enough to remember the movie, so I call that the Deliverance Effect.
It's worth the hassle though, because the maxed out op-amp compresses the signal in such a nice way -- providing the hiss is under control and the output is not pushing the amp into mush territory.
I have still not worked out how he gets those really great spacious effects on the Rising Force album. I suspect some kind of delay in post and probably the studio's plate reverb unit or something. I spend a little too much on plugins trying to work out how he did it -- now that I have relented and decided ones and zeros on a hard drive are worth paying for.
Dist+? I like them a lot too. For Randy Rhoads tones for example. Why do so many folks have to be one or the other about stuff huh? That's how fanboys behave.

  • @PeterDad60

I have 3 tube preamps. I changed out the 12AX7's (100% gain factor) to 12AU7's (16% gain factor). Each preamp has a volume knob and a gain knob and cost $40. I find these to be the best way to increase / control volume and gain. Better than non tube pedals, and less costly as well. I have a 4th that is a hi gain preamp and I kept the 12AX7, just instaled a different version as in "B" or "C" type. The gain is all and more than I need. It also has 3 band eq knobs and a gain/clean channel as well as on/off true by-pass, for around $40.
I kept the 4 transister type gain pedals that I had purchased before I got into tube preamps. But really? $235 for the Wampler Plexi-Drive Deluxe, $89 Big-Muff Pie, and $109 Ibaneze Tube screamer and $49 for the Pro-Co Rat which was the only inexpensive pedal. They are all very good, but so are my $40 tube preamps and with them I can change the tubes from 4 levels of gain 12AX7, 12AT7, 12AY7, 12AU7 and even different versions of each. So the sound/tones available with different tubes makes for a more well rounded and versatile gain controller.

I think the Distortion + sounds great through humbuckers and a Marshall-style amp, since it was kinda made for that market. The DOD sounds good through that setup too, but it's much sludgier and has a more pronounced low-end and lower mid-range. If you don't like the low output of the Distortion +, you can replace the puny B10K output potentiometer for a sturdy A100K potentiometer to get much more volume. Also, I think at low gain settings, the Distortion + kinda sounds like a Fender Tweed style breakup, which I personally find that bluesy twang very appealling. That being said, the 500K gain pot makes the gain range of the DOD more linear and useable, because the Distortion + doesn't get crazy until after 3 o' clock.
Both pedals are great for different purposes at the end of the day.

This is kinda a wanna pick your brain question rather than me just go to EQD and ask them. I kinda want your take. I love the Spires but the Red Channel's (Silicon Dream Crusher) fuzz pot needs to be dimed just like any Fuzz Face, which when it is sounds so so sweet. This is an issue when you want to change to the green channel (Rosac Nu Fuzz) because I would never dime that....it sounds awful. I always have to bend down and turn the fuzz pot to about 11 or 12. Is it possible to mod this with a pot that controls just the green channel's fuzz? Thanks man!

Was thourghly unimpressed with the Gray Channel; the Plumes , on the other hand, I will never get rid of.
EQD makes some sweet crossover Drive/ Fuzzes, - Bellows, Speaker Cranker,Dirt Transmitter, - & one of my favorite Ge Fuzzes is the OLD version of the Dream Crusher; for whatever reason, it's not quite as temperamental and sensitive to power source.
It's almost disturbing how over time, your idea of what sounds best can change so dramatically. So much depends on what you're exposed to,- as you learn what is POSSIBLE,- but I've also determined that it's about nature as well as nurture; just like we seem to have varied sensitivities to form, line, and color, there are aspects of sound that are difficult to teach or learn.Language is like that, so it stands to reason that sound would follow suit.
You see that most often with people getting caught up in Fuzz circuits, especially the Tone Bender search; I remember first realizing the extent of the tonal palette. It's become a right of passage.

I think the differences in key features between the two prevents them from being similar in the context of the conversation. While both are multi-channel 250-based circuits, we think the ability to stack the 50/50's two channels separates it from the channel switching of the Gray Channel. That doesn't make it better or worse, it just makes it distinctive. In the big picture of drive pedals, they're similar. In the conversation of DOD250 based pedals, they are distinct. - steve

  • @dirkbonesteel
    @dirkbonesteel 5 років тому

MXR I have the exact same petal, and it has a bit more balls. Given the age of it and the volume it probably has a leaking electrolytic capacitor. Far from the end of the world but if you hand it off to a amp guy it's possible a 25 cent part would make for a better sound. It's not going to have the same volume as the newer petal but should do better than it's doing

Hey Ryan, what would stack well with a 250. I've got a Bigfootfx Drive250 and I've tried to stack it with a Kelley phat mod and a bluesbreaker style pedal. I put it before the bd2 and the bluesbreaker. It sounded okay... Is there another pedal you would recommend pairing with it?

    • @60CycleHumcast

RJ_Connor put it after other pedals and keep the gain under 50% it will thicken you the signal and give a bit more gritty break up.
