I haven't read all of the Before the Golden Age anthology myself, but one of my favourites in there is "Old Faithful", by Raymond Z. Gallun, from, I think, 1934, which depicts a first contact with a very alien (read non-humanoid) martian, mostly from the martian's perspective. it's really interesting and I can see why it was a popular story at the time and made a great impression on many readers. There's also pretty unique work in there from Lawrence Manning and nat Scachner.
