Followed the video to drop the headliner in my 2020 Forester. Had all panels and the ceiling dropped in under 2 hours. Very simple, just nerve wracking at first. Once you get comfortable working with the panels, clips and recommended tools (these make life so much easier), you'll cruise right along. If you have an eyesight, pop off the switch cover panel and remove the two 8mm bolts before simply unclipping. I almost returned my Prinsu out of technical uncertainty, but after a deep breath, watching this video a couple times and following the dissembly sequence outlined in the installation guide, I'm glad I followed through. Mounted a Roofnest Falcon up top for a sleek, unibody feel that can only be accomplished with the Prinsu rack. Thanks for taking the time to author this instructional Scott.

Great step-by-step Prinsu roof rack installation. I don't own a Subie but watched for educational purposes. The OEM roof rails would never be reinstalled thus the OEM rails would have been cut/drilled for removal instead of the tedious task of lowering the interior liner and risk breaking various parts, airbags or the expensive eye sight. No way would I have been that gentle on the OEM rails. But this was educational!
Awesome upgrade! Last time we talked I was looking at the Crosstrek but you changed my mind and suggested the Outback, so my next vehicle will definitely be the Outback!
The Crosstrek is an an awesome vehicle but the Outback is much more utilitarian. I can shove a couch in the back it is so big and I use it to haul all sorts of stuff from 2x4s to what ever. Plus it is long enough to sleep in. It is a very capable all around vehicle. Commuter, etc.. Good decision!

I agree with your recommendations and suggestions. I installed a Prinsu on my Outback and had the same problems y’all ran into. Only thing I would have suggested, although a bit late now, is to coat the crossnuts with silicone before installing them for extra leak protection. As well as a bit on the neck section of the bolts to seal the bolt and spacer (not just the bace of the spacer) from water getting in.

Hi Scott, thx for the informative video! I have a quick question for you - over your past experience using RTT on the factory rails, did it cause any damage to the rails? I'm planning to put an ultralight RTT on the factory rail with some 3rd party cross bars, but I'm a little concerned that the plastic rails will get damaged from being overloaded as they are only rated for 150lbs. I appreciate the Prinsu roof rack but just don't think I'm ready for all the work and stuff so think I'm gonna start with some entry-level setup. Thank you!

Hello. Stumbled upon your video after Prinsu searching. I’m also in Arizona. I’m curious if you have had any leaks with the rack. The AZ sun is brutal and was wandering if any of the seals have dried out leading to issues.
what did you use for the rubber liner to seal the extra holes? At least I have 8 holes per side, and only drilling 5 per Prinsu install guide (I have a 2024 Outback). Prinsu recommends waterproof tape, or silicon. I saw a clip of the rubber you used. Curious how you sealed up the unused factory holes. What product? Would Gorilla All-weather tape at Home Depot work? Put silicon in the holes prior?
I'm looking to increase the total storage potential on the roof of my 2020 Outback. I'm curious, how much additional usable/mountable width do you estimate this rack added versus the usable/mountable width of the factory crossbars? I'm looking at putting on a large Thule cargo box, I know with the factory cross bars that would take up all available space. I hoping that with a proper roof rack I could also free up additional surface area to also throw the Gazelle T8 up there for transport.
Question: What is the clearance between the rear of the rack and the liftgate when it is up all the way? I'd like to put a lightbar in the back, but curious about the space.
Question on the removal of the factory rails: are the single swinging cross bar bolts, as well as the 2 tie down bolts, only a threaded bolt that can be removed and the side rails stay attached to the roof? Or are those bolts the ones that have a nut accessed from the inside? I am looking at designing a rack that utilizes the factory side rails and curious if I could remove those particular bolts and use them for mounting, without removing the headliner and accessing the bolt heads.
Question for you Scott: I see you’re lifted on the LP Adventure 2” spacer lift. With all of your trails and experience with the Outback in the back country...... If there had been a different type of lift available, like a Coil over lift suspension, available for your Outback, Would you have done that instead?
4XPEDITION As far as I have researched, 2” and under doesn’t cause that many problems, if any. The particular lift Im looking at for my 20 is a max 2”. How many miles are on your Outback?
Hi Scott, great video! I’m thinking about installing this rack on my Subaru outback, but I don’t want to try and tackle it by myself. Wondering if you know of somebody in the San Francisco area who does installation? Thanks, Adam
Fantastic install video. I have a 2020 Subaru Outback and looking at the Ikamper Mini. Would you do the Prinsu rack again? I think I saw you had the RTT mounted on another rack before the Prinsu setup as well. Are there clear advantages of the Prinsu and what would those be?
I definitely believe there are advantages to the Prinsu. It is a total bear to install though. If you have the confidence to do it, I would say do it. If not, either hire someone or use a Yakima rack with Landing Pads to join it with the Subaru factory rails. Much easier but doesn't look, or perform as well as the Prinsu. Would I do it again? I would if I wanted my RTT to sit as stealth as it does with the Prinsu. Plus, switching to the mini was a major difference. Visit my website and click the link in the overland equipment for the Prinsu and for the iKamper if you decide to buy. It helps support the channel if you use those links. 4xpedition.com/equipment/off-road-vehicles/subaru-outback-overland-road-warrior/
Hey Scott! So I'm leaning between the Crosstrek and the Outback, and although I want the Outback for the space, the stock crossbars are definitely a concern. Is there a weight limit for the stock Outback crossbars? How did you get around that for your iKamper? It seems the stock Crosstrek roof bars can hold a lot more weight. Thanks for the videos!
Both are great vehicles and have their advantages. Much better lift kits for Crosstrek available similar to the Forester. The Outback though has tons of space inside to sleep two 6-foot tall people. The main thing to consider is dynamic load weight, not static. Be sure to look into that if you haven't. I recommend you watch this video on how I mounted my Skycamp ua-cam.com/video/sMq5Q-JYbOg/v-deo.html ( that was before I switched to this Prinsu rack - ua-cam.com/video/DIWOj2ypviw/v-deo.html ).

Thank you for this amazing video. I have a 2017 outback and want to get the Prinsu roofrack before getting a RTT. Now this is a very daunting task and I would rather pay someone who knows what they're doing to do this. Problem is I live in WA! Do you happen to have any contacts in this area that can help me out? Thanks a bunch!

I think you've got the best Subaru headliner teardown video on UA-cam. I've got a Crosstrek and I've had serious trepidation about buying and installing a Prinsu rack because of the headliner.
Thanks! I appreciate you sharing that. It was a commitment for sure. Time and trust. Note, too, that after this install I ended up having a bit of leaking in the far back two mounts on either side and had to re-silicone those. So, it wasn't done until it was done...if you know what I'm saying.
Scott, this video is awesome, one of my favorites. I have a stock 2019 Subaru limited. I want to take it to one place to have everything done at once. Would your guy be able to do a complete transformation including lift, tires rims, the roof rack, led’s ...similar to your current Subaru setup? Can’t wait to see your sky camp mini on that new rack. That looks so sick!
Black Label Garage that’s great. It’s pretty cool to see local business and content creators team up like this. I was nervous when Scott said you would be pulling off the roof liner...and then seeing you own it like a boss was so cool!!
Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative to this rack? I cannot justify spending about $1,000 on a rack for my 2010 Outback that is only work around $8k. I am considering just making my own brackets and direct mounting a platform rack that I can find used, or just direct mount my Yakima Loadwarrior basket.
One of our TEAM 4X Members designed his own Outback rack. Really cool design. You would have to create an account on the Team 4X Member portal and become a member to learn about it, though.

Hey Scott. I have a 2020 Subaru Outback Touring XT that I am going to add a Prinsu rack and an iKamper mini. I live in the Boise area so I'm a bit far from you to help with the install of the Prinsu. I will probably have to do myself with the help of your video. I am torn on whether to get the Rocky Black or Black on the iKamper. Which one did you get? Is $250 more for the Rocky Black worth it? Thanks.
I got the black. The Rocky Black is more textured I think. You might like that. Glad the video helps! Did the video help you decide to do the rack and tent?
By the way, my recommendation: the night before you do the conversion get all the tools and get it all set up and ready to do. Get up early in the morning so you have the whole day to just take your time. That's what will make it less daunting-- having all day and plenty of sunlight.
4XPEDITION Thanks for your reply. It did close the deal for me. I had a Prinsu rack installed on my 2018 Tacoma TRD Pro and love it. Been looking around for a pop up tent for my Tacoma and came across your channel. My wife just got a 2020 outback touring XT a couple months ago. You gave me an idea to have both my Tacoma and my wife’s outback set up for overlanding. That way we can use either one depending on where we go. Been going back and forth btwn the bigger skycamper and the mini. After watching your channel, I’ve decided to go with the mini that way it’ll be easier to transfer to our cars. Also, we will save some space for other things. We are converting from RPod trailer camping to overlanding. Thanks for your channel.
@@maltoki89 Hey there. This is exactly what I'm doing. I have the Outback all rigged up for soft-road adventure. I am looking to add a truck of some kind or a 4X4 sprinter. I kept my iKamper Skycamp 4 person tent and am going to put that on either the bed rack of a truck, possibly a Dodge Ram, or on the roof of a 4x4 sprinter for additional sleepers and maybe even on a trailer to pull behind the Subi for when I bring Amy's (my girlfriend) kids along. There really are good reasons to have both a Subi and truck rigged up for Overlanding. Plus, if you bring friends or family along there is another comfortable sleeping space. On top of that, the Subi is actually long enough inside to sleep two 6 foot tall people. Thus, you will have plenty of space to bring people along.

I can't say really. I have a rooftop tent on top of my vehicle and with the Prinsu rack I also have a set of small maxtrax on the roof. I have had zero issues so far.
So you took the ceiling liner out just to get to those nuts at the bottom... if only Subaru had put in riveted nuts instead of regular nuts, you would have save few hours easily. Something for Subaru to think about I guess.
My Prinsu roof rack install only required installation of the push nuts or rivet nuts. This was a very good by-the-books Prinsu roof rack installation on a Subie but it took way too long. If I was installing the Prinsu on my Subie I would have drilled/cut or destroyed the OEM roof rails instead of tearing down the interior liner. The OEM roof rails would never be reinstalled and discarded.
Don't know exactly but considering the rack is bolted right to the unibody construction of the vehicle at about 8 different points (requiring the headliner come out to install) I assure you it isn't going anywhere and the load cap is significant.
why the hell pull the headliner...to remove the garbage oem rails? just abandon the hardware. Pulling the headliner to install blind riv-nuts.....not really the idea there boys. Made this 90% harder / longer than it needed to be.
How exactly would you do it? Cut up the oem rack? How are you gonna get the nuts on the bottom side? Cut the bolts and just let the nuts roll around in your headliner? Most people spend more time on their phone in 1 day than it would take to install this properly. Put down the phone and do it right.

But are there any other options?
Could something like this be done on a 2011 legacy?
I made a Prinsu Install video for my Gen 6 Outback. I linked your video. In my description as another reference to watch. I hope that’s cool. If not let me know and I’ll remove it.
No problem! Always happy to see more videos on that kind of install. Wasn't an easy one if you ask me.
4XPEDITION no it wasn’t. It would be a lot quicker second time around. But I’d rather not! Lol
Well it looks bad ass
Thank you for this amazing video. I have a 2017 outback and want to get the Prinsu roofrack before getting a RTT. Now this is a very daunting task and I would rather pay someone who knows what they're doing to do this. Problem is I live in WA! Do you happen to have any contacts in this area that can help me out? Thanks a bunch!
You might look at my pals up at Northwest Overland. They do wrenching meetups. Look up Dan Cronin. He’s the founder. Tell him Scott sent you.
Did you get this installed?
I do have some names for you Rei. If you go to my website at 4Xpedition.com And fill out the contact form I will respond with some names and phone numbers
@@4XPEDITION thank you for this option :) I did end up having a frontrunner slimline installed instead so it all worked out in the end!
Absolutely, Chris.
Go to
www.4xpedition.com/about-4xpedition/contact-us/ and fill out your information and I’ll get back to you. Cheers!
Id be happy to help! Reach out through Scott’s site and we can connect!
Black Label Garage that’s great. It’s pretty cool to see local business and content creators team up like this. I was nervous when Scott said you would be pulling off the roof liner...and then seeing you own it like a boss was so cool!!
@@es0terra Haha I love working with Scott. He always has a cool project to tackle
What year is this Outback? I have a 2022 and am needing to do the same thing.
2017
about to go through this process on my crosstrek. about how long was the tear down and reinstall process?
Well the first time takes longer of course but it took us about 6 hours. That’s also because we had to run to harbor freight twice.
thank u. it's the only part of the install giving me nightmares before I start. haha
Rightfully so!
Very nice!
Thanks GFG! And, thanks for your continued support and viewership.
Did you have clean up the excess blobs from the silicone from the plus nuts and spacers, or just left them like that?
We cleaned up as much as possible. We ended up covering over everything with waterproof tape
Covering over everything, post install? Or before you put the rack?
@@deadbrainn Before screwing down the rack. So we ran thick black waterproof tape over everything in the trough. Then we cut little X’s Over the screw holes. Then we dropped the rack on with the risers. Then we screwed everything down which made it waterproof.
What about inside the spacers, did you fill it with silicone too?
@@deadbrainn Yes. Did that as well.
4XPEDITION
Thanks for your reply.
4XPEDITION
Thanks for that recommendation.
How did the light install go?
Haven't installed a light bar on the top yet.
Any recommendations for a rack that will fit a 4th Gen?
Not other than a Yakima or Thule.
Any issues with the wind shield rubbing on the roof. Just finished installing mine and its sitting right on it. (I guess I can always move it up to the upper hole) thanks in advance
I there. Nope! mine hasnt caused much trouble.
@@4XPEDITION thanks for the response! Super stoked on finding your channel! Are you on IG as well??
@@koreygilliland6423 yes sir! @4xpedition on IG and on Facebook. And, you might consider joining the new TEAM 4X. I just launched a whole membership portal on 4XPEDITION.com. 31 people signed up already and just launched it. People from all over the USA and Canada so far
@@4XPEDITION Thanks! I'll definitely check it out!
How much weight are you comfortable putting on this rack?
I can't say really. I have a rooftop tent on top of my vehicle and with the Prinsu rack I also have a set of small maxtrax on the roof. I have had zero issues so far.
Did you get your eyesight recalibrated after?
Yes
Though I should add that it really didn’t need it
So you took the ceiling liner out just to get to those nuts at the bottom... if only Subaru had put in riveted nuts instead of regular nuts, you would have save few hours easily. Something for Subaru to think about I guess.
There were about 6 if I recall.
What is the dynamic and static load of the prinzu?
Don't know exactly but considering the rack is bolted right to the unibody construction of the vehicle at about 8 different points (requiring the headliner come out to install) I assure you it isn't going anywhere and the load cap is significant.
I want this rack.
It’s a great rack. Very solid.
great rack! any effect on mpg?
None at all. Didn't go down and didnt really go up. I thought maybe it would go up as the rack and tent are now more aerodynamic but nope.
How do you guys do installs for those in CA?
You would have to bring your vehicle to Phoenix.
why the hell pull the headliner...to remove the garbage oem rails? just abandon the hardware.
@@The88ninjas yup, you got it, let the nuts drop..they will only roll as far as the nearest pinch, and then live there forever.
@@bjlanders no way. I’m sure they would vibrate and buzz on something.
Yeah. I wouldn't do that. Off road they will bounce around and rattle. Off-road vehicles have enough rattle as it is than to unnecessarily add more.
I need to add this to my 2018 OB
