I remember, I was 17 years old. When I first saw this movie I was sleeping over a friends house. He lived at the corner of our part of Texas like I’m talking in the corner. We could see Mexico from his house. It was a small town. I was just getting to know MariaJane then. And he’s like let’s go to the room they’ve got those movie channels. This is like 2007 so we’re going through the channels and he tells me about this one movie Babel so we get to watch it and it’s already halfway through so we can’t rewind so I just watch it from the middle all the way to the end and was just absolutely blown away, a few years later remember Best Buy buying it from the beginning and being even more blown away what a movie man what movie… 🍿
This is a timeless movie. You watch this movie after a century from now and I bet you'll still be amazed by its freshness and originality. The music is so deep sometimes its disturbing. You understand the power music when you start to feel something and you can't put that in words. Sad? Despair? Joy? Can't tell. Gustavo Santaolalla is a genius.
I love listening to this when I'm really drunk and stoned and feeling down. It's really intense, yet soothing. Makes me remember all that I have failed, and those I have failed.

Gustavo's playing of the banjo reminds me so much of The Last of Us theme song -- it gives me goosebumps. Ryuichi and Santaolalla, you two are musical geniuses.
this is a truly beautiful piece..i related this to one of my breakups.... how the violins sound like 2 people arguing leading to the end of a beautiful chapter in their lives and both them just drifting apart from each other.. and the piano chords in the back represent their internal struggle of how they have to cope with whats going on but at the same time see that that's a part of life... and the ending just sounds like a new start after getting used to the decision that was made... so much emotion in this piece... its amazing what music can do...
Just so beautiful the ending of this movie and you will always wonder what did she write to the directive in the last scene. Just all the stories are so deep because they could actually happen.....

This music and the scene where the Moroccan police takes his sunglasses off when he understands how everything happened, is one of the best movie scenes ever.
I just remembered this movie from a while ago and hearing the start of this song was as though I was underwater in a dark ocean and then... that second you come up for air. This is what it felt like to me...unbelievable.
Alexander Meza memoirs of a geisha should have won for Best Original Score. The fact that Gustavo Santaolalla won when he wrote very little of the score is awful. The music in this video was written by Ryuichi Sakamoto (The Last Emperor, The Revenant).
Quelle émotion ! Parfois, quand mes élèves semblent nerveux, on éteint les lumières, on ferme les rideaux, on écoute... Tous sont calmes après. Magnifique...

Its saddening, soothing and optimistic; the melancholic, jazzy piano progression gives me this NYC rainy-midnight-lonesome feeling. The strings play this perpetual, beautifully persisting pattern. Causing restlessness, feelings of optimism and ambition; whilst you cant stop it. Just like you cant stop life. Call me crazy, but this piece of music covers a lot of emotions; thought-provoking and mesmerizing themes that leave you clueless and in love with the bittersweet journey called life. Randomness, meaning and intent colliding day in day out on this planet. This soundtrack is a perfect match when it comes to the intent of the message this movie is leaving.
So lucky to have watched this film; otherwise may never had "discovered" such an amazing Japanese composer whose great work really goes back decades before 2006. Of course, the music by Santaolalla is beautiful as well!
I listen to this when I am feeling down and hopeless. Somehow the melancholy nature of this soundtrack comforts me. It’s good to acknowledge your hurt instead of bottling it in and pretending you’re incapable of feeling pain. Pain is human
