Any other flutist watching this like "whoever made my flute, thank you so so much"😂 seriously for all the flute makers out there, thank you. You contributed to our musical career and gave us this beautiful instrument.❤️
Because of pyorrhea about 32 years ago I lost all my teeth and I had to wear full dentures . For that reason I could not continue studying the flute: all my teachers and colleagues told me that having lost all my teeth had to study another instrument , piano or guitar, for example. Today, I'm 67 years old and since 7 months ago I have been traying again the breath and I've already managed to get to the lower notes. From now on I will try to get some skills in fingering , and so I am showing all the negative opinions I got in 1984 were wrong. It was just start from "zero". And now when I'm a very old man I realize all the time I have lost and all the joy I could not experience. (Please forgive my poor, ugly English because i'm a Spanish speaker).
Thanks for your wishes dear Thanos. I'm actually making progress, but in a very slow way. I find it very difficult to finger in quick passages because I have osteoarthritis. I am already in fairly acceptable condition to execute the progressive exercises of Gariboldi. Greetings.
That Boston flute in the end was so beautiful I love flutes with the gold coloring it gives it extra personality (but I love my silver one just as much). This was really cool to see since I've been a flutist for 6 years and never knew how they were made
There's probably a name for it. I found out about something called trypophobia recently (fear of small patterns of holes). Kind of the reverse of what you're talking about, but I bet it's a thing too.
I play my flute, but watching this video made me realize how hard people building this worked. So, since I luv my flute so much... THANK YOU TO ALL PEOPLE WHO HAVE EVER BUILT FLUTES!!!! They work hard... it looks like, and thank you for showing this video... i wz going to watch it on tv, but i missed it. YAMAHA is the best brand of flute. ive had mine for 6 yrs, and there are only a few scratches on it and i hace only had to have the pads replaced once!!!!!!
Mine was a discarded Highschool flute, I readjusted some of the come along screws and it played well the last24 years ,Yamaha 21Fl. I love the low notes, just take your lips apart. I work with lower jaw alot.
Totally understand the feeling! The only piccolo at our school got stepped on at a pep band once. It was like someone died! Glad you were able to get yours fixed!
It depends on the Flute and the kind of Pads that you want on it. If you're playing on a $30,000 Muramatsu Flute or an $80,000 Brannen Flute, then you're going to want the pad that is going to give you the best sound and control. In this video, the were talking about Flutes in the $40,000 range so it makes sense that their pads would be around $90 a piece.
For the people who are saying "Holy Crap! 48,000 dollars!" You have to look at the type of flute. The typical alto flute, shown in this video, ranges anywhere from 3,000 to 6,000 (if it isn't a Japanese model designed to fall apart). The tenor flute, baritone flute, contrabass etc. may cost more. And no, the flute is not difficult to play. Once you figure out how to get a sound everything becomes fairly easygoing.
+Emily R Lol thats not an Alto flute, thats a C flute. C flutes are the most common flute played and its what all beginners start on before moving to piccolo or other instruments in the family if they want to switch.
I own a custom made flute that was commission for my local music store. It was priced at $350 but since I’m a college student I got the price reduced to $250. I’ve had it for about a year and it’s the perfect flute. Not to big or to little and closed hole .
Flutes are actually the second-hardest woodwind instrument to play, I think. Maybe third. No, we don't have to suffer from reeds, but we have to keep it parallel to the ground, like Jason said. We certainly do have to use our lips. That's how we change octaves, dynamics, and so many other things! Notes is only one aspect of music.
Oh yes. I remember when I got my first full silver flute. It was slightly heavier than the model I had before and I immediately felt it: The muscles in my upper left arm and my higher back really hurted for a few days until I got used to it.
Oh my gosh! The flute being made in this video is a Brannen-Cooper! My flute professor at college played one of these and they're REALLY expensive, but sound amazing!
I have two. one being 600 and one 1800. The 600$ one is a beginner level and the 1800 is more intermediate A profession flute goes from 2000 to pretty much as high as someone is willing to pay for
PegasusUnicornGirl They even range to about 60,000$ for a flute. It all depends on the metal used and company. The 60k flutes are usually made out of high-quality gold, and they go even pricier, depending on how you need the footjoint, or even the C# extra key. I:
In Crowley we have things called chair tests. When we have a chair test we get rated on how well we play the instrument. First chair is top chair! Which means you are the best.
I got a very nice flute for $1200 that had a Boston head joint and Sonare body and foot joints. Excellent flute and almost as good as a fully professional flute. One think to consider though is the Boston head joint dents way easy as should be handled carefully. I can't imagine how delicate some of the better flutes are. (btw thinner metal= better tone)
+Anna Baker Yeah it's a Brannen flute. Note the Boston engraved above the logo. The Brannen emblem is also more of a calligraphic style while the Burkart one is more geometric. Both are excellent flutes.
i don't play flute... you must be special! i'm so glad you mentioned it to the entire world that obviously cares about your needs, so thanks for not stating pointless gestures!
+Bill Elliott My bassoons cost $4,000 and $6,000 a piece. I'm saving up for a fox 240 which is about $9,000 or a moosmann 24 which is about $8,000. Professional bassoons usually run for about $30,000 or even more
Flutes have a lot of variety. Open holes or closed holes. B-foot or c-foot, stirling silver, everywhere, nowhere or some place, a gold lip plate, a gold everything.
I play the flute an I love it! It's silver-plated but not open-holed. I'm second chair at my school and I've been to an Ohio State Honor Band. For anyone out there who plays the flute... well... FLUTE POWER!!!! :D
I bought a mendini brand but mine is silver nickel, case, cloth, tuner, cleaning rod, joint grease. I didn't buy it it was my grandpa but mine is nickel. And they are shipping mine from California to my state witch is Michigan.
My best friend bought a 3SHB i think that was origanly that price, but she got it for $600. It has a gold lip plate, open holes, an a b foot joint. It is a gemeinhardt. We both play Gemeinhardt flutes.
@ksmolly im also in sixth grade i just started playing but i really dont think you should be worried because a few of my friends flutes do that and mine only cost 200 and it works perfect!
@missduck9 I know that, but the narrator said that "the wax melts through the holes (in the flask)." That can't be right because the holes are blocked by the hardened plaster; therefore, the wax must be melted out through the plaster cylinder after a hole is made through it - at the bottom, I assume.
I agree with that...I didn't want a gold flute after trying out Gold Brannens, but when I played Powell's Aurumite flute (tubing is both silver and gold, fused together so they vibrate as one...75% Silver and 25% Gold. I find that I get the response of silver and the warmth of gold. Though, the heaviness of it is taxing to work through...I have to work sooo hard but I need the work I guess. Platinum plays like an absolute dream...but I may as well keep dreaming.
This is Brannen Brothers Flutemakers, Inc. (Later part of the film shows a 14K gold flute) The pricing estimates indicated, are all normal for this high level of flutemaking (soldered toneholes) but today this way of flutemaking is becoming ancient.

_I HAVE A NEW FOUND RESPECT FOR MY OWN INSTRUMENT HOLY MOTHER OF GOD_
yes
No wonder it costs so much.
Because of pyorrhea about 32 years ago I lost all my teeth and I had to wear full dentures . Atilio Nalerio wow. good on you man. hope you have progressed
Thanks for your wishes dear Thanos. I'm actually making progress, but in a very slow way. I find it very difficult to finger in quick passages because I have osteoarthritis. I am already in fairly acceptable condition to execute the progressive exercises of Gariboldi. Greetings.
Actually, your English isn’t that bad.
That Boston flute in the end was so beautiful I love flutes with the gold coloring it gives it extra personality (but I love my silver one just as much). This was really cool to see since I've been a flutist for 6 years and never knew how they were made
i dotn understand why there are dislikes on this video, is there something that insulted you in the making of a flute?
Ir probably has to do with the woman doing the voice over, She is Canadian and her voice is very irritating.
Michael Hill I'm Canadian and I don't sound like that.
Them salty clarinetists
Michael Hill Probably because its the brass section commenting
Treble Clef Guy just cuz the audience cant hear them :(
I call it body... Not center joint...
thank you, I cringed so much when he said that
Ella Smith lol me two
I call it an embouchure plate... not a lip plate...
same
Same
I love how carefully made this beautiful instrument is :)
This makes me appreciate my flute even more now
Am I the only one that's oddly disturbed by the tree thing?
I thought I was the only one!
I know! They look like legs!
There's probably a name for it. I found out about something called trypophobia recently (fear of small patterns of holes). Kind of the reverse of what you're talking about, but I bet it's a thing too.
Nope..

Interesting images of tooling and technique, we should be grateful they let us see these.
I play the flute!!!! ^w^
Mine was a discarded Highschool flute, I readjusted some of the come along screws and it played well the last24 years ,Yamaha 21Fl.
I love the low notes, just take your lips apart. I work with lower jaw alot.
$90 to replace a pad?!! Where you taking your flute? I got 3 replaced for like $35.
Meisha Sonsteng I get mine for free (clarinet btw )
Meisha Sonsteng i had 5 bent keys fixed for 25. I droped it during marching band
Totally understand the feeling! The only piccolo at our school got stepped on at a pep band once. It was like someone died! Glad you were able to get yours fixed!
Meisha Sonsteng this was video was made in 2006 so time changed
It depends on the Flute and the kind of Pads that you want on it. Now... knowing the painstaking craftsmanship that goes into the making of a flute... I'd have no qualms at all about paying 9000 dollars!
What am I doing here? I play bass clarinet
sharkbite951 Same
sharkbite951 exactly lol

As a flute player myself, this was really fascinating to watch
I got mine for a thousand. I'm still paying back my parents.
Music and machines are tied together for sure,
Beautiful work, the skill to create these must take years to perfect ;)
All this so some 11 year old can play hot cross buns😂

How It's made! What does the scouter say about the price of the instrument!?
It's over $9000!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't ask me why, but I never get bored watching this.

"Tristeza não tem fim. Felicidade sim" =]
its because some people want to learn about instruments. I've played it for 39 years. It is very fun to play and it takes you on a journey.
Only the flutests will get this; The band director tells you to keep your right arm up and you head straight because "THE FLUTE IS SO LIGHT"!!!😒😒😒
Flutes and Gaming I know how you feel!
Flutes and Gaming DIRECTORS LIE
Oh yes. I remember when I got my first full silver flute. It was slightly heavier than the model I had before and I immediately felt it: The muscles in my upper left arm and my higher back really hurted for a few days until I got used to it.
Vickie Sandusky you mighy want to read this then. www.jennifercluff.com/lineup.htm
"Marching band" posture is not necessarily a good thing
Tyra T all flutists that I know are stronger in their left arm because we support or flutes with it the most
played flute in year 5, was an amazing experience. I like all wind instruments and want to learn ocarina and piccolo.
And why would they pick brannen cooper flutes? They are the most expensive out there...
Victor Petre they sound the best
There are more expensive flutes than that. Powell makes platinum and gold flutes that are priced through the roof
Oh my gosh! The flute being made in this video is a Brannen-Cooper! My flute professor at college played one of these and they're REALLY expensive, but sound amazing!
Are there any clarinets out here?
I'm here
Me 🙋🏻
Melissa Rivera me!
Thanks! That song is called "A Felicidade" and it was written by late Brazilian composer/musician Antonio Carlos Jobim.
HOLY CRAP! 48,000 DOLLARS FOR A FLUTE!!?? MINE ONLY COST $600!
I have two. one being 600 and one 1800.
The 600$ one is a beginner level and the 1800 is more intermediate
A profession flute goes from 2000 to pretty much as high as someone is willing to pay for
thank goodness! I thought it was all for just one flute.
I bought my professional flute second hand for $1700, I think new it was closer to $3000.
PegasusUnicornGirl They even range to about 60,000$ for a flute. It all depends on the metal used and company. The 60k flutes are usually made out of high-quality gold, and they go even pricier, depending on how you need the footjoint, or even the C# extra key. I:
My was $199
That was interesting. I love these video's that take you through the instrument building process.
anyone else wondering what that song they play is in the beginning and end?
Generique by Luiz Bonfa.

I play clarinet
We need more oboists in this world

wow... I've never seen a more interesting documentary on the Discovery Channel. :)
-FLUTES ROCK
... I'm never going to get a chance to replace my 20 year old flute.
20 years is like nothing. One of mine is at least 50, if not more. It just got renovated though, that is definitely needed.
In Crowley we have things called chair tests. When we have a chair test we get rated on how well we play the instrument. First chair is top chair! Which means you are the best.
I play clarinet but my best friend plays flute
OMG EXACTLY THE SAME
Alexis Dykes but it's the other way around I play flute & she plays clarinet
I have so many flute friends im a Saxophone now I used to be a flute but it's to hard
Its such a pretty instrument.
I have a silver plated one, and I can't stop playing it.

Or practice every day 😂
Ikr
I got a very nice flute for $1200 that had a Boston head joint and Sonare body and foot joints. Excellent flute and almost as good as a fully professional flute. One think to consider though is the Boston head joint dents way easy as should be handled carefully. I can't imagine how delicate some of the better flutes are. (btw thinner metal= better tone)
This was a Burkhart flute yeah they are expensive Altus is just as expensive.
Actually, it's a Brannen flute in the video. The logos look similar, so it's easy to get them confused.
+Anna Baker Yeah it's a Brannen flute. Note the Boston engraved above the logo. The Brannen emblem is also more of a calligraphic style while the Burkart one is more geometric. Both are excellent flutes.
Wow...I just play..never thought about how it was made, totally amazing
my flute us about $1200, a $48000 flute is a tad bit ridiculous
I guess the $48,000 one is platinum!
you can actually buy a solid 14k gold flute for $100,000!
Heckel bassoons run about 55 grand and the top string instruments can easily be more...
i don't play flute... you must be special!
i'm so glad you mentioned it to the entire world that obviously cares about your needs, so thanks for not stating pointless gestures!
I'm more of saxophone trombone guy probably cause flutes are a pain in the ass to learn lmao
Not really but it depends on the person playing
yeah i tried it a couple times and i never got the hang of it...
Dann cause you don't have the special skills to play the legendary flute
As a flute player, I can confirm flutes are a pain in the ass(and the shoulder)
Flutes are hard to play, but when you get used to it it's fun and interesting.
i am like the biggest fan of, how its made, and like i've always wanted to watch this video!!!

+Liang xinyu I play clarinet
Such detailed work to make a flute....
That is a lot of money for an instrument. My alto recorder was about $35.00
depends what the instrument is made of and where you get it from. i got my silver plated gemeinhardt flute for $200 on craigslist.
Nah. Look up how much a violin costs. Even the bow is the pain in the ass . Maintenance is more heavy as well
+Maxie Team Magma Leader I almost got a solid silver flute for only $400 but I decided not to get it, I wish I would have though.
I've been playing the flute for 7 years now. I started when I was 10 years old.
My flute cost $7,000 but I bought it used....
😑
+Oal Alvaez well it depends what brand you have and what it's made out of
+Sally Anne Chestnut My Amadeus flute cost about $1000. I got it from a refurbishing company, and it was in really good shape
+Oal Alvaez L.O.L so is mine 😗=======
+gome123sam same! Lol.
My best friend bought a 3SHB i think that was origanly that price, but she got it for $600. It has a gold lip plate, open holes, an a b foot joint. It is a gemeinhardt. We both play Gemeinhardt flutes.
Why the hell is it sooo expensive 💸💸💸💸💸💸💰💰💰💰💰💰
because these are like PROFESSIONAL grade. get an intermediate one which pretty much sounds the same for around $1000 or just rent it
TUNA IS HERE man made and takes 3 days to make
I sure would love to prance around town with one of those.
I got mine for 300 and something and I hate the flute that's why I became a Saxophone

I play trumpet
i play YFL-674 which costed me around $4000..I love it so much..great flute expresses musicality so much better.
Flutes just got a whole lot more awesome in my book.
@ksmolly im also in sixth grade i just started playing but i really dont think you should be worried because a few of my friends flutes do that and mine only cost 200 and it works perfect!
@missduck9 I know that, but the narrator said that "the wax melts through the holes (in the flask)." That can't be right because the holes are blocked by the hardened plaster; therefore, the wax must be melted out through the plaster cylinder after a hole is made through it - at the bottom, I assume.
wow, i can't believe how much work it takes to make one!
I love this show, I watch it all the time on discovery
Wow...that was pretty cool. Thanks for posting.
Flute player FTW!! I love being a flute player
I play the flute so that was so cool watching that!
Platinum plays like an absolute dream...but I may as well keep dreaming.
gee...i nvr knew my flute was made like that...Thnx for the upload

0:21 felicidade, its a old brazilian music, from tom jobim :')
"sadness is endless, happines, isn't..."
It's a Brannen Brothers Flute! Those are top of the line!
wow that's awesome! although a little bit confusing but with only 5 minutes it's awesome!
Now imagine making a flute 300 years ago without modern machinery. They would have been amazing works of craftsmanship back then.
I am jealous of her tone!!
This is Brannen Brothers Flutemakers, Inc.
(Later part of the film shows a 14K gold flute)
The pricing estimates indicated, are all normal
for this high level of flutemaking (soldered toneholes)
but today this way of flutemaking is becoming ancient.
Really interesting. Always wondered how they constructed them.
The song is "A Felicidade" by the Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Precious metals, hand crafting.
It'll also last forever. One of these flutes can and should be passed down from generation to generation with proper care.
Wow I never knew it took that much work to make my beautiful flute.
@Jaffet1990 Those are for beginner flutes. I'm soon going to be getting an Intermediate flute, which cost a bit more.
