Welcome back to MINDFUL INSIGHTS, where we discuss everything you need about health, wellness, and safety. Today, we've tackled a crucial topic that affects millions of people annually, "FOOD POISONING!"
What is food poisoning? What are some risky foods? How can you avoid them? And what do you do if you suspect you've been food poisoned?
So, what exactly is food poisoning? Simply put, food poisoning is an illness caused by consuming contaminated food or drink. This contamination can be due to bacteria, viruses, parasites, or toxins. Symptoms usually include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and sometimes fever. It can range from mild to severe and, in some cases, can be life-threatening.
    RISKY FOODS
Common foods that can be risky if incorrectly handled or prepared.
    1.RAW OR UNDERCOOKED MEAT
Beef, pork, and poultry can carry harmful bacteria like Escherichia Coli (E. coli) and Salmonella. Always cook meat to the proper internal temperature to kill any bacteria.
    2. UNPASTEURIZED DAIRY PRODUCTS
Raw milk and cheeses can contain dangerous bacteria like Listeria. It's always safer to choose pasteurized products.
    3. EGGS
Raw or undercooked eggs can harbour Salmonella. Ensure the eggs are cooked until the yolk and white are firm.
    4. SEAFOOD
Raw fish, such as sushi and shellfish, can be contaminated with viruses and bacteria. Ensure they are sourced from reputable places and adequately cooked.
    5. RAW SPROUTS
Alfalfa, clover, and bean sprouts can be risky because they are grown in warm, moist conditions, ideal for bacteria. Consider cooking them to reduce risk.
    6. PRE-PACKAGED DELI MEATS
These can be contaminated with Listeria. It's best to heat deli meats until steaming them before eating.
TIPS TO AVOID FOOD POISONING AND KEEP YOUR KITCHEN SAFE
    1. PROPER HAND WASHING
Always wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before and after handling food, especially raw meat, eggs, and seafood.
    2. CLEAN SURFACES AND UTENSILS
Regularly sanitize countertops, cutting boards, and knives. Use separate cutting boards for raw meat and vegetables.
    3. CORRECT STORAGE
Refrigerate perishable foods within two hours. Keep your fridge at or below 40°F (4°C) and your freezer at 0°F (-18°C).
    4. COOK TO SAFE TEMPERATURES
A food thermometer ensures meats are cooked to safe internal temperatures. For example, poultry should be cooked to 165°F (74°C).
    5. AVOID CROSS-CONTAMINATION
Keep raw meat, poultry, and seafood separate from other foods in your grocery cart, grocery bags, and refrigerator.
    6. MIND THE EXPIRY DATES
Always check the expiry dates on food packaging. When in doubt, throw it out!
WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT FOOD POISONING?
    1. STAY HYDRATED
Drink plenty of fluids, such as water, clear broths, or oral rehydration solutions, to prevent dehydration from vomiting and diarrhoea.
    2. REST
Give your body time to recover. Resting helps your immune system fight off the infection.
    3. AVOID CERTAIN FOODS AND DRINKS
Stay away from dairy products, caffeine, alcohol, nicotine, and fatty or highly seasoned foods until you feel better.
    4. SEEK MEDICAL HELP IF NECESSARY
If your symptoms are severe, such as high fever, blood in vomit or stools, severe abdominal pain, or dehydration (indicated by dark urine or little to no urine), seek medical attention immediately.
    5. USE OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATIONS CAUTIOUSLY
You can use medications like anti-diarrheal and anti-nausea drugs, but consult with a healthcare provider first, especially for children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.
Food poisoning is no joke, but with a few simple precautions, you can significantly reduce your risk and keep your meals safe and enjoyable. Remember, cleanliness and proper food handling are essential. If you suspect food poisoning, stay hydrated and seek medical help if needed.
