Yup, you have to use that and a bunch of swivel extensions if you have stock headers. Shops will charge to take headers off to replace the valve.

@Gear Jammer For example, you buy a part for a Mercedes-Benz, lets say a thermostat from BEHR which is for most cases the OEM supplier, if you take a close look at the casting there are some filing marks used to take the star and original part number off.
@@null643 The original manufacturer can by law sell their parts, however they are not allowed to sell the same exact parts "original branded" ment to be distributed by the brands (Mercedes-benz, BMW, ...), so they have to "de-brand" to sell under their name as aftermarket OEM replacement parts.

As my first car, a e46 325ci, that was a manual. The e46 M3 has always been and always will be my dream car. No Ferrari or Lamborghini could ever make me as happy as the beast of a e46 M3. Hopefully one day I can get one!
I just replaced my original 2005 coils and four year old plugs. It was running good before, but it is now as smooth as the day it rolled off the line now.
ELDOR coils and NGK TWO ground (not the four ground) platinum (not iridium) plugs.
NO motor issues. But Plenty issues with bushings, one wheel bearing and CV joints wearing out.
Had to buy a used convertible top pump for $200. That all works perfectly again.
My remote key fob circuit board went out. I have to send my mirror (I have a cabrio) out to get that fixed. There is a guy who does that.
My rear window defroster doesn't work. That's all the electrical issues.
Fan clutch uses a viscous fluid to operate. All the grease and residue on the outside of the fan clutch was that fluid that leaked out. It should be replaced.
You don't need the special tool for removing the fan from the water pump. I worked in a BMW dealership for 14 years and never saw a tech use that tool. It was always the proper size wrench (forgot what size it is) and a hammer. Attach wrench and give the end a whack with the hammer and reverse spin the fan to remove it. Works every time.

For O-Ring replacement, I highly highly recommend the green AIR CONDITIONING and HVAC O-Rings, you can use them in automotive to replace original or aftermarket black O-Rings, BUT they have a much much better temperature tolerance, they handle much higher temps and much colder temps too, they are just as flexable as standard black O-Rings but they are stronger and have a lifespan 5 times longer than standard black automotive O-rings from ANY manufacturer, get an A/C or HVAC Assorted O-Ring set and be set for life because the work so much better and last way longer than the black O-Rings.
I dont think that was oil on your viscous fan, its the fluid leaked out from the clutch part, its a telltale sign of that part failure

That fan needs to be replaced, too. As old as the car is, the fan clutch and fan need to be replaced too, unless he wants to replace the radiator again when a fan blade shatters and pokes holes in the new one he's got.

The reason you want to use viton is for hydrocarbon (oil/fuel) resistance mostly rather than temperature.

Not really interested in BMWs but gave this a thumbs up because, conceptually, your information is spot on. You illustrated how much money can be saved for some very basic work. I hope people who ordinarily wouldn't even consider wrenching on their own cars are encouraged by your example, Sam.
And instead of paying $800 or soo for a fuel pump (like a kid did in my old car group), or you can do it yourself in around 30-45 minutes. Pop the backseat bottom and it's right there..a few 10mm bolts, unplug the connections (with a rag over fuel line for spray if you don't have a pressure tester to relieve pressure), a dowel and hammer to "spin" the big ring off and out it comes. Full of fuel...no problem.
But, change it around 100k miles or it will fail and leave you broken down. 124k is when mine died (in my garage- just got home from work)

A trick to restore faded plastics like that valve cover is to use a hot air gun and run it over the parts until the oil from within the plastic comes back to the surface. I know it sounds crazy but understand that plastics are petroleum based products so when the fade it's because the oil at the surface has depleted. Heating the surface pulls the oils from beneath back up and you then have a newer looking part. Give it a test on a piece of black plastic laying around and see for yourself.
I do all my own work on my 2005 M3. It is quite EASY to work on. Things are LAYERED, so it may take you hours to get to the problem which may take 30 minutes to fix. Power bolt and nut removers are a must.
I recommend a set of those metal forks that remove the wide variety of sizes of plastic push fasteners.
NEVER buy a part with BMW on the box if at all possible. You can buy the same or similar part for half the price online. GOOGLE each and every part number. Plug the part number in eBay and Amazon too. I buy boat loads of my parts on eBay.

Yeah that BMW dealership wanted $5k for new cats, $1500 for 4 new O2 sensors, and $1400 to do a valve cover gasket. I LOL'd at $120 for two brake lights. Common guys you would be a sucker to pay that.$300 to re learn the SRS computer $300 to clear the trouble codes. Just wow

Great clip for the DIY’ers who own BMW’s, Own 3 myself and have done many of the same fixes. My biggest disappointment in BMW is who ever decided the rubber compound for the gaskets and seals, they absolutely Sux!!!

Striven, get a brain and use it. I have many other vehicles from other manu. They use a different rubber compound than BMW uses and none have this issue with brittleness creates the leaking issues BMW’s have.
So it is them doing the proper heat testing and selecting the correct compound. Not hard.
Built in reason to go to dealer, so BMW can keep making money off you.
I would do the water pump and stat whilst you have it all drained down and apart. Probably worth replacing the coolant hoses as well. I did the lot on my old E39 when the rad failed just for peace of mind as those big straight sixes are hard on the cooling system.
If you pull the hoses apart, either replace the o rings (ebay was were I got mine--even with new ish hoses), or the hoses. You'll get weeps if you don't..and that's the last thing you want is lose coolant to an aluminum block and head. Parts are cheap vs an engine.

I bought a car that I had running before the flatbed pulled away. The spark plug wires on the distributor were miss wired. I knew that before I bought it. The tow driver was pissed because he wanted the car but couldn't figure out the problem. I drove the car for 6 years before passing it along and it's still going.

I bought a 95 M3 for $400 listed as having a blown motor because it would crank but not start. Meet the seller and looked at the car and it was really clean. Cowl drains were blocked and ecu got wet. Payed him and came back 30 min later with another ecu I had. Swapped them over and it fired right up. He was pretty sad but did not say a word.

I bought a 350z that was misfiring for 2k clean title with 80k miles. Owner changed plenum gasket, throttle body, spark plugs, ignition coils, head gasket, and had also installed down pipes. He gave up on it and tbh it sounded worse than a tractor. Turns out after checking everything he said he had done, I noticed he plugged the cables of the coils for cylinders 4 & 6 opposite of eachother. Long story short that was the problem. No issues since then
The paint job isn't the only thing keeping it from being a high dollar car. It's the Water Damage Title. That means that the car was submerged in water for a period of time. You have to replace all of those electrical connectors and wiring harnesses. Corrosion will build upon other electrical components like it did on that post in the engine.
@@happyguy5025 If all of the the connectors aren't pre-treated they will corrode eventually. All it takes is humidity. He has no idea how long the car was submerged in water. This car wasn't just wet it was submerged that's why it's a flood Salvage. It was under water.
flood or water damage doesnt have to be under water or a time period. Flood can be used anytime its water period. Look at porsche flood listings, most are either convertibles or coups with windows down. Just enough moisture to kill the module under the seat will total them. Ive also seen with campers most that ive personally inspected have been from various roof leaks.
@@authenticrebuilds9247 For an insurance company to (total out) a car for water damage it has to be submerged in water. The CPU, all electrical connectors, and engine intake would have to be all submerged in water. The only exceptions are Toyota 4x4s, older Range Rovers, and certain Jeep. Their electronics can be classified as Marine Rated. That means their electrical connectors, seals, and housings can pass a Marine/Boat Classification Rating.

Im going off first hand experience with what i have seen at copart while buying and inspecting cars, campers, even boats that are reported as flood that havnt sunk but are in there for other reasons. cars DO NOT NEED TO BE SUBMERGED. also if you look at copart pics those w/l pics can be total bs sometimes. I saw one way low in paint pen on a car but yet there was a clear waterline that wasnt cleaned on the backside of the headrest. all water/flood titles means is that it was effected in some way by water.

They are going to have lower standards. They will tell the buyer whatever they need to hear to make a SALE! You're going off of YOUR experience as a third-party (independent) inspector.
Here's the thing, If he tried to sell this car only 5% of insurance companies in the country would underwrite a policy for this flood-damaged car, and that is only after a state inspection and a reissued title. And yeas, in order for an insurance company to (total out) a flood-damaged car it would have to be submerged. CPU, engine intake, and electronic connectors and harnesses.

Having owned an e46 and worked on it quite a bit I am astonished you didn't need control arms, wheel bearings, sway bars, and struts. The water pump is also a weak point.
So is the vanos, rod bearings and rear subframe mounts...oh and the headgasket
You might want to double check that viscous fan clutch and make sure it wasn't covered with its own oil residue from a possible leaking shaft seal.

Luis Nunes hold onto that one, and don’t spare out on the maintenance. Hope it’s a manual. Some E36 M3 front seats would complement it well, if you can find some good ones at a fair price. I know someone who done that, even though it’s the tan interior, the black seats still look nice.

I fix my oil leaks by cleaning my motor every 6 months. Never had any water damage because i am careful. I really only have slow slow misting. Not enough to lower the oil level between 4,500 interval oil changes. I BEAT my motor once it gets to FULL OPERATING OIL TEMPERATUE, and it still does not burn a drop of oil.
Low miles on the motor....110K. My rod bearings are fine.
Good luck! I have dealt with several flood cars in the past and every one of them was an endless money pit, mostly of electrical problems that keep popping up as corrosion moves through the system. One day things work, the next day they don’t.
Coming from an E46 M3, want to add actual resale value to the car? Replace the rod bearings, install subframe reinforcement plates, and do a VANOS bulletproofing. These are the major weak points and things that an educated e46 M3 buyer will be looking for. With those miles the rod bearings, unless they were replaced recently, are likely showing some significant wear. I've seen a lot of 2003.5+ models with worn bearings starting at like 110k miles. I would be even more concerned with rod bearings considering the car was not well cared for (i.e. infrequent oil changes) and the chance the flood put water into the oil pan. VANOS bulletproofing and subframe reinforcement are pretty straightforward--assuming theres no visible cracks in the subframe already. Cracks need to be stop drilled and welded.
i have a 87 bmw e30 convertible that i have been restoring. With the Bently manual... very easy to work on. Even the timing belt.
The Bentley manual is the way to go. It's a must have. 01 e46 330cic
*Why don't you get yourself a set of Quick Jacks? they are made by Bendpak and you can get them with either the 120V electrical plug for the pump OR a 12v pump that you can connect to ANY Battery or even A battery charger to operate. I don't have a shop so everything i have done normally involves a floor jack and having to re-position it like you keep doing . The quick jacks give you an easily mobile mini lift that will lift pretty much anything at least 3 feet off of the ground. i purchased the 7000 pound ones with the SUV attachments and so far there is nothing they won't lift . they are rated at 7000 pounds but i have easily lifted 12,000 pound trucks with them and not had ANY problems doing so with no damage to the lift. just seems like that would make your life so much easier if you had a set*

Doyle smith believe it or Not had a friend used to own a supercharged (ess) E46 325ci . That used the same maf sensor as the Kia Optima!
I got into an accident in my E36 M3. Went to get a quote. 9k. Towed it back home, spent about 800 in parts and have been driving it since. Never will go to a shop again. Never never. Like never never never.
A BMW always looks nicest in silver metallic, in my opinion. But then again I think that silver metallic looks nicest on most vehicles now. And metallic paint will protect your car a little longer against rust.
While you are in there, adjust the valve lash. The S54 uses mechanical, not hydraulic, lifters and the should be set every 30k miles or so.

I bought the shop manual for my 02 SVT Focus, had to do a clutch job and was having a hell of a time getting the transmission to clear the sub frame and come out of the car. After reading through the manual you need to cut a 300mm long section of 2x4 and wedge it between the sub frame and the oil pan to rotate the engine. After doing this the transmission just plopped right out LMFAO. Pays to have that manual!
And the internet.. Sometimes tricks can be found outside the manual.

guys i have never seen a plastic valve cover for the v8s n62-63 and the n52-54 ever break. unless physically acted upon i.e leaving a screw somewhat in thinking you have every one out and it crack because you try to pry, other than that there valve covers are pretty sturdy as long as of course you're not running more then factory boost settings and etc...
Do you work for a dealer? Or a shop??? No v8 uses a plastic cove like you said.... however n52k n51. N54. N55. All have plastic covers. And they all crack all the time and leak not only oil out. But air in..... oh ya the 4 cyl n20 and n26 also crack..... so want to try again.

Had a brand new 03 Red M3 coupe 6-speed like this one. This brings back a lot of memories.
You should also change the oil filter canister gasket while you have the fan shroud and pulleys off. It's much easier. Also the power steering hoses are known to leak so those should be changed also. Change the thermostat, housing and water pump now too. I did all this on my M52TU when the radiator blew.
as long as you were in there you should have at least checked the valves. For anyone messing with the pressure relief valve it is very soft an easy to destroy so be gentle when you are applying torque to remove it. It is set at 1 bar or a little over 14 psi. There are two more in the engine, one in each cam so at idle you will see a pretty low oil pressure when hot.

Its only straight forward cause the internet is full of fixes for a car that hasnt been produced since 05. 06.....and the dealers have figured out most the issues.
All of that oil on the fan clutch could be leaking fluid they do leak ..it’s bad replace it

I had the engine rebuilt by a master bmw tech with everything new top to bottom. It runs and sounds amazing.
I had a shop quote me $10000+ too rebuild and install.
I got everything done on my own for $4500
@@shaunspengler5857 amazing what a tech will charge on a side job vs the shop rate that pays not only the shop... the lights. Tool bills, writer car wash porter. Sales. Etc.... for ever 100 charged..... or rather 200 now at a bmw dealer the tech would be lucky to get 35 of that....
Samcrac, check that cooling fan out. The oil on that fan could be from the fan itself because there is oil within the thermostatic fan clutch. If it leaks out of your clutch it will not work properly, which could contribute to overheating. The fan should have some good resistance when turned by hand, if the fan turns easily, replace.
I dare say that, not replacing that Fan Clutch/Clutch Fan (which had obviously been slinging oil out of it onto the Fan Shroud) is probably going to come back and haunt you very soon. If that was in-fact, oil from the Fan Clutch/Clutch Fan that I saw on the Fan Shroud? Those things lose their oil and they lock-up, keeping them engaged all the time.

Great video, so much more satisfying to see something with fairly easy success opposed to the Land Rover and Ferrari nightmares that seem to be and endless domino effect of failures. Keep them coming, I am an old guy that enjoys watching and wishing I still had the mobility to try one of your adventures like this BMW. I owned 3 over the years and loved them until all the out of Warranty failures and ridiculous repair cost took all the fun out of owning them.
Viton is an okay oring for that application, but I would have gone with a Silicone (Red/Orange) oring. Would stand up better against the static pressure and has similar heat resisting properties. The original was probably a black nitrile/buda oring, which understandably disintegrated like it did.

You literally bought and installed a new alternator and other miscellaneous parts, before diagnosing the cable as the issues.

11:10. The thing is, the radiator in that box isn’t exactly the same. Yes it’s by the company who made the BMW radiator, but it’s not exact. BMW requires exact specifications for their parts, and the problem is the OE manufacturers switch up the specs or materials a bit for their non BMW version of the part. Yes it’s cheaper, but it’s for a reason. Most of the time these OE manufacturers use cheaper metals, hoses, and anything they can cut costs on. It makes it cheaper, but in the long run it won’t last nearly as long or be as reliable as the BMW OEM one would be. Just a warning.
Surprised you didn't also tackle a new thermostat and water pump while you had the fan out.

Reset your sunroof !! it's out of calibration and not sitting flush with the roof when closed.
I wouldn't run that fan, even tho it doesn't look cracked they like to break alot, which then takes out the radiator and shroud. Replace the thermostat and thermostat housing while you're in there
Ugh that valvetrain roasted red like that tells you the oil was not changed on time at all.
While you had the valve cover off you should have done a valve adjustment and peeked into the Vanos to check for a broken exhaust hub tab 😁

Nissens is a great brand! Radiator for my 2001 Audi is like 50eur while a new one from Audi is 400+
But there are crappy aftermarket brands out there.
Kinda goes back to the saying " you get what you pay for". Although, fcp euro has lifetime warranty. (Just don't expect to "trade" in a new part for an upgrade)
I bought a cheaper maf because it was around $100. The VDO part is around $180...soo, the cheaper maf could not be returned (caused me to chase my tail thinking I had lean issues- it mis metered the air causing my car to run very rich).
Had to shell out $180, but it's all good in the end..I'll repair this car until the parts are free.
@@doylesmith8678 you are lucky because no one offers lifetime parts warranty in Europe. As I said, some aftermarket brands are good (they are the same who manufacture parts for car companies, eg Hella, Behr, VDO) and others are complete crap.
I totally dig watching these videos. I buy ford though because the maintenance is less and the breakdowns are also less. Well, and the parts less as well. When I say less, I mean cost less and and hardly needs to be worked on. Again I love German cars and the glamour. I am hooked on these vids.
Sam, you should check out European Autohaus on Bearss Ave down in Lutz. They did a great job changing out an LED headlight on my Audi S3 and were at least 50% cheaper than the dealer on pretty much everything else they do. They service all the German brands.

I’ve been watching Samcrac for years, but this project is really starting to give me the courage I need to work on my own E46. I bought a LPG-converted 316i Touring as my first car 6 months ago (not exactly an M3, but at least it looks cool and is cheap to own), and being almost as old as me it of course has some issues... I already replaced the water pump to fix a coolant leak which was a fairly easy job, but now it’s started to leak oil as well and I think that could get quite a bit more involved. But hey, if Sam can do it, so can I, right?
