How to Build a Wine Rack. Awesome Pallet Wood Project.

- How to Build a Wine Rack Out of Pallet Wood. I was tossing around some wine rack ideas and decided that pallet wood, or reclaimed wood, is the perfect choice for a rustic wine rack.. All you need for this project is an old pallet (for me a hardwood one is my choice). A Pallet that has seen some wear is preferable so as to achieve that rustic look.
Please note that this rack is not designed for the long time storage of wine. The wine rack is designed for bottles that will be drunk in the near future.......which in my case fits the bill perfectly!

Cheers Mike. Thanks for stopping by mate.
Wow, that came out a ripper. I confess, I doubted in the beginning, but it's super finished and on the wall. Thanks.
I made this today and I'm happy with it. I used pallet wood for everything except the glasses holder for which I used a fence slat. I need to be careful and not "mill" the wood too much and lose it's rusticness. It's amazing to me how beautiful crummy old wood, that most people think is garbage, can become. Cheers Knackers !
Roger Bower Well done Roger! I'm totally with you, it's important to leave some of the character on the wood. That's what it's all about. Cheers mate
Thanks Richard. All l do is apply a clear satin oil based varnish, sanding between coats with a 220 grit paper. Cheers mate
I thought this was going to look terrible until I saw it varnished up. Very nice job :)
Cheers mate.
I made one about a year ago and it turned out nice, even unvarnished.
Was not too sure about your project at first, but it turned out pretty snazzy......looks very nice. I especially like the effect of the front board that is incomplete, it really gives off the rustic feel. Don't forget the malbec!
+Anton Bouchette Thanks again Anton. I've now converted mine to a magazine rack which looks really good. I also attached a mismatch of knobs which make for a handy hat rack. Cheers :-)
Shane your enthusiasm is ripper !
Cheers Brad. Thanks for watching mate.
Greetings from the US! I built a wine rack similar to this
Greetings back Den. Well done on your wine rack. Cheers
Shane Conlan is my hero!
Glad you liked the video Richard. Cheers mate
shaneconlan1
Yeah, top stuff!
I've just taken delivery of 25 old pallets, so will be definitely using your ideas and tips! Take it easy mate!
Richard Clarke 25 pallets! Richard, you are going to be a busy boy. Cheers mate
Thanks Kansaboy. Mate l use the marine grade varnish because it's what l had left over from another job. It does have advantages though especially if you intend to have your project live outside. Cheers mate
I've gotta get some power tools!! (No experience but would love to learn) the wine rack looks awesome!!! I don't drink but my Mom likes wine. How cool it would be if I could actually make one of these for her!!! She'd be blown away!!!
You're not wrong DaddysPearl, it would make a great present:-)
That was frigging brilliant!
👍😁...Glad you liked it Michael and thanks for watching mate 👍
Just finished the stools, just found my next project with the last pallet!!
Good stuff Chuck! Hope the stools turned out OK?? 👍😁🇦🇺
Love all your videos! Don’t change a thing.
G'day Jack...glad you like the vids mate and thanks for the feedback....it means a lot. Cheers 👍👊😁
G'day Philip. Thanks for the comment mate. I used old fence palings for the bottom of the rack to sit the bottles on. I just fitted and nailed them between the front and back pallet boards. You can use any old timber really just as long as it is recycled as you can see it from underneath. You want it to blend in. Cheers mate
I had no idea that pallet wood can look so beautiful. An excellent build and video. Thank you for finding to time to put it together.
No worries Glen. Thanks for taking the time to leave some feedback. Good old pallets…you can't beat 'em. Cheers mate:-)
Thanks matty. Good luck with the second attempt! Cheers mate
Thanks NMranchhand. Appreciate the comment. Cheers mate
Shane my friend love your work. Your projects are so easy to comprehend because you explain it clearly. Well i don't need a wine rack but what the hell I'm off to build this one anyway. Many Thanks Mate!
Aaron, my wine rack alternates between a wine rack and a magazine rack and l have to say it works really well as both. Good luck with yours mate. When you're done, how about you post a pic or two on my DIY For Knuckleheads Facebook page? I'd love to see the finished project. Here's the link;

Cheers
Another great project! I have acquired 9 pallets so far so going to start making some of your awesome furniture
Thanks John and good luck with your pallet projects! Cheers mate
Shane hello.
a good idea would be a rack where the bottles stay lying.
Another rustic triumph !
Well done Knackers... great job !
Thanks Stuffy. Mate the rustic beer fridge sounds like a really good idea! Let me have a think about that one.....l'll do it! Now to find an old fridge..Cheers mate
I love old timber , that is just beautiful :)
Cheers Dodgy. Yeah mate, steer clear of the pine if you can. Hardwood gives a much nicer rustic finish. Thanks for letting me know about your username change. Is that a result of the new google +. A lot of people have reverted back to their original name.
dude, you are good. very nice projects. glad I found you.
Love all your videos! Another must do.
Thanks Teresa. Looks like you're going to be busy. :-)
Thanks IMightBeJesus. Good luck with your project. Let me know how you go and yeah l might just whack it on Pinterest. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers mate.
Dave, your videos, information and style are brilliant...game changers for anyone interested in DIY pallet projects. Got some beer money headed your way!

Cheers TheBearwithchainsaws. Yeah mate it didn't come up to bad. Thanks for the comment. Much appreciated.
Cheers Norbury. I wish it was too mate! Unfortunately it's more likely to be something like a Rawsons Retreat which sells for about $8.00 hahaha.
that looks awesome
Thanks mate 👍😁
Good job knackers.....👍
👍....Cheers mate 👍🇦🇺😁
ESTA LINDO GRACIAS!
Thanks Lori. Cheers
Thx Shane 😉
No worries mate ;-)
Ripper! I reckon you could use it for your scotch or bourbon collection!
Good call John. Cheers mate
Came to this video after the one about separating a pallet (even sawzalling a few proved to be a task cause some pallets just have a harder life than others) but I loved the look of the wine rack so had to come see what you did to it to make it look so good. I'm building a computer desk (but could be any sort of work surface) out of pallets because the cost of a new desk built with the dimensions and shelving like I want would be out of this world. (okay, I'm just cheap haha) It's a bit crude since I'm just measuring and just winging everything as I go, but you sure have helped me with your videos so just wanted to say thanks and cheers from North Carolina.
Thanks Thomas....glad you liked the wine rack mate and well done on your pallet projects.....winging it is the way to go l reckon.....that's what l do on virtually all of my projects 😂 Have a good one mate and thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺
great job as usual.. don't let aunty knockers get too tipsy tho.. ;)
ooooh great job ! !! ! !
👍😁...Cheers mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Love it ! 👍
Thanks Steve :-)
Great video and idea. I'm going to make the shelf and store something else though. It's better to have wine laying horizontally rather than vertically.
Thanks Christopher. We don't keep our wine long enough for standing up to be an issue :-) Cheers mate
Why would it matter if the wine is horizontal? It doesn't matter at all. You only need to put the bottle horizontally if the bottle has a cork to keep the cork from drying out. None of those bottles have a cork therefore laying them horizontally does absolutely nothing.
Thanks for the comment maresalatime. I would love to see a picture of the finished product. How about you upload one to my DIY For Knucklehead Facebook Page? Pallet couch, l'm not sure but there will be a pallet chair coming up. Cheers mate.
I've just made this for my father inlaw. Good brownie points. He might put me in his will lol. Could you make a pallet couch? Keep up the awsome work and videos. Cheers!!!
Great video!
Thanks
Thanks Imeh. I really appreciate the comment. Cheers:)
Love, love ,love it!!! I love the rustic look🍇
Thanks for that Octavia and l appreciate you taking the time to leave some feedback. Cheers:-)
That looks awesome! Mine looks like that, after it had been run over by a truck.. second attempt hopefully will work out better..!
Thanks RiteSedFred. Mate l don't want the wine to go off so it's best to drink it as quickly as possible:) Cheers nate
what a beautiful piece of wood you have there. nice wine rack man.. I always appreciate the natural beauty of wood. Love the characteristics it has on it.
Thanks Dave, yeah the wood looks awesome! That's the beauty of pallet wood. Cheers mate
shaneconlan1 you're very welcome keep up the good work. Videos like yours inspire me to do the same thing on my free time. Not only that these make good Christmas gifts. Again thanks for your video!
Nice mate. I love ur videos ✌🏼all the way from Denver, Colorado
G'day Lazaro, glad you like the videos mate and give my regards to Denver! Sounds like an awesome place you live in. Cheers mate 👍😁

Thanks Ashleigh. Appreciate your comment and thanks for the sub. Cheers
Sweet
Thanks mate 👍
Thanks Hilary. White or Red? Cheers:)
Cool little project. I love the rustic look. Did you apply wood stain before varnishing or is that just clear varnish?
Hi Shane, thank you so much. I truly enjoyed your videos and I am a huge fan. Your work is very simple and education. I love it that you using reclaimed palettes for most of your work. You really a great mentor, thinking of safety at all time. I am making a table for my portable barbie at the moment. Saludos from New Zealand. I subscribed, sweet as!!
+querida1809 G'day Querida. Thanks for the comment! It's really appreciated and good luck with the table. I'm sure it will turn out great. Cheers
I find your Channel 2 days ago and I love it. Can u please talk a bit about how to use the planer . Thank you boss
Good to have you on board Mo. Have a look on UA-cam mate.....you're bound to find someone giving a tutorial on using one. Cheers mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Brilliant work dude! Well worth a follow! Will be putting my plans in place for vino storage very soon! :D
+Punky Powers Thanks PP. Good luck with the build and l appreciate you taking the time to leave me some feedback. Cheers
pmsl here in england knackers r them 2 things men hv between your legs lol,,, great vids mate : )
Love it!! Now, I'll just have to make one! Btw Shane, you might want to add a nice photo up on pinterest with the vid attached to it. This should be seen by a lot more DIYers imo!
You crack me up. Great videos, can't wait to make this.
Thanks C.B. Good luck with it :-)
Another great video. I notice that you always use "marine" varnish. Is it just handy, or is there a reason that is your first choice? Thanks again
Is it better to stain the wood before or after putting it together?
Just recently found your vids and love them...always great to see a fellow aussie too :)
Good stuff Downunderpiggies! Thanks for stopping by and for leaving a comment mate. Much appreciated. I'm the same, it's great to watch other aussie UA-camrs. Have a good one. Cheers
love this!! Thanks for the idea!
Good luck with it Danielle. Let me know how you go. Cheers
Hi Zan, l did a video called How to Build A Raised Garden Bed. In that video l go through the process of how l dismantle a pallet without splitting the wood. The link for the video is in the description box in this video (the wine rack video). Check it out, the process is really easy. Cheers mate
so cool. u cant buy one that's nicer than that!
Thanks Tom. Glad you liked it. Cheers mate
So what did you do for the base for the bottle to sit on?
Nice.
PELOPES SANTOS Thanks mate :-)
Hey have you ever tried doing railings for porches and patios using pallets? I can never find that, I only find fencing made from pallets, never rails.
No l haven't Chloe. I would imagine that it wouldn't be to difficult to do.
Great video! Thanks for all the great advice and ideas. I have subscribed!
Thanks Elizabeth. I subbed you back. Cheers
shaneconlan1 Wonderful! Thanks Shane! Stunning wine rack btw
Love the video. I'm making one of these this weekend. I was wondering what you used for the thick structure pieces though. Are those 2x6's? Thanks!
Isaac Baldwin Thanks Issac. All l used for those pieces were the stretchers from the pallet which are 2x4's. Cheers mate
shaneconlan1 Oh ok, thanks!. Those just looked a lot bigger than 2x4's.
Great project
I have been given a load of wine crates but I don't no what to do with them have you got any ideas you use them in my next video
Mate, the options are endless. Jump onto Pinterest. I'm sure you'll get some inspiration from there. I look forward to the vid. Cheers mate.
how did you do the inside bottom? Is it the glass holder that holds the wine also..? because that doesn't seem right or am I missing a step
+josh price Go back to the video Josh. The detail should be in there. Cheers mate
Yeah, pretty sure it doesn't say how you made the base to hold the wine bottles.
Installing the bottom was skipped over you're right. It looks like two pieces make up the bottom. I think he just measured the inside dimensions of the two rectangular openings, from the edges to the middle support, on each side and glued/nailed in two pieces of wood so they are flush with the support in the middle and with both sides. The three spacer blocks that hold the slotted piece for the wine glasses get attached to the bottom. You can see at 4:17 the two rectangular openings that are filled in and become the bottom.
what is the width of the cut and how far apart
Thank you for this great video. I attempted it, but found the rusted nails were preventing me from disassembling the pallet. I was splitting and otherwise damaging the wood.
Do you have any tips for dealing with rusty nails? (The only thing that came to mind is inserting a cutting tool between the pieces of wood).
Love the finish on the wine rack, I noticed none of the red stuff got spilt on this build ???
Thanks Ian. Yeah l was a bit more careful :-)
Just thought, its not often these days you can tell someone they have a nice rack !!!! lol
ian elley To true :-)
Looks great! Can't wait to start my project. Just curious though, what are the bottom of the wine bottles resting on?
Did you use stain or did the varnish give it that dark look. Looks great!
Joey, that was just a clear satin finish. Once applied it darkened the timber up. Thanks for the feedback mate. It's much appreciated
Great video! Subscribed!
Just one question, how did you attach the bottom piece(s)? I don't see the ends anywhere. Are they installed between the support pieces?
Thanks again, great work and entertaining to watch. Cheers
G'day Eric. Thanks for the comment mate:-) The bottom pieces are installed between the support pieces. Cheers.
What sort of nail gun do you use, Uncle Knackers?
Just wondering if i should sand all the wood or only the front board? Love your videos man
+Jesus Martinez G'day mate. I always sand the whole lot. It just makes the project more complete and it feels better wherever you touch it. Good luck with it. Cheers :-)
Hey Shane, like the wine rack is it possible to send me the sizes as it's just the correct proportion. Thx mate 😉
Mate, the overall length (which is the important measurement) is 1140mm long. Cheers
Lol I live in a town called Milo...... Maine
Hahahahahaha....small world Greg 👍😁🇦🇺
Awesome video..I'm in the middle of building one myself, just a question. How much space did you provide for the glasses
Hi Brian, thanks for the comment mate. The space for my glasses came to 90mm from the centre of one slot to the centre of the next slot.
Made the mistake of letting my wife watch this. Now I have another project to do! Great vid and project. One question though, how do I get some of those great Aussie hardwood pallets, most of our pallets here in the States are oak?
Cheers mate
G'day MrSlodez. Sorry about the extra workload:) I know what you mean, hardwood pallets are getting hard to find. You just to look harder. Cheers mate and have a great xmas.
I am having difficulty with the slotted board breaking in between the slots. I am drilling the hole in the middle of the board and creating the slot every 5 inches. Any suggestions as to alleviate this issue?
Hi Rochelle. One of the tricks is to find a dense board as they are less prone to breaking. I know what you are referring to but it just takes patience and a steady hand. If they do break off you can glue them back in place with the aid of a nail which has the hole predrilled prior to banging in the nail. Good luck
Mate, l haven't got a clue! Yeah probably some magnets. You can never have enough magnets:)
What are the bottles of wine sitting on? It there a board under the bottles? Thanks
G'day Stuart. There is a board under the bottles. Cheers mate.
Thanks stevie. Yeah mate the old stuff really does come up well. Hey by the way, l just checked out your latest video 'the worlds fastest piano player'. What a ripper! Anyone who is reading this, do yourself a favour and check out steviejacko's channel. It's a classic. Cheers mate
gday m8, how can i show you a couple pics of what i have done, i use all pallet timber
+malcolm lewis Mate, duck over to my Facebook Page at DIY For Knuckleheads and upload them there. Cheers mate. I look forward to seeing them :-)
Great work Shane, love that I stumbled on your channel yesterday. How are you attaching the bottom board, the one the bottles sit on? Nails from the sides? Greetings from the States!
G'day Matt. I simply nail the bottom board to the three blocks on the bottom of the actual rack. Hope that makes sense. Cheers mate
wait? so are the bottles sitting on top of the wine glass bottoms? or did you install another piece of wood inside the rack?
No mate. If you check out the video, there's a base that the bottles sit on. The glasses are about an inch under that base. Cheers
ok, I put 4 small pieces on the inside and dropped a piece on top.
Great project! I just completed one thanks to you, and what simplicity! Anyways, I would like to know how were you able to hang the wine rack to your wall. Mine is pretty heavy and I just don't know what would be the best method to use. I'm hanging mine up to the drywall of my kitchen.
Thanks in advance.
Thanks Erick. The best way to hang the rack is to screw through the back of the rack and into a stud. Cheers
