Nobility and noble titles are officially abolished in Germany, the nobles were just allowed to keep their noble titles as part of their surnames (Contrary to Austria, where the noble titles were removed even from the names and the descendant of the Kaiser is now just "Mr. Habsburg")

The use of the castles nowadays can vary a lot. What you would describe as a castle was either the residence of a noble who ruled the area or
a defensive position/fortress and often both at the same time. Castles that are still owned by the original noble family or someone who bought
it from that family are either simply a private residence for the owner or partly museum and partly residence, if it is big enough. As Selena said,
some can also be used as event locations. Older castles that are not very suitable to live in or are owned by the city/state are usually
pure tourist attractions and event locations. Some have museums in it or restaurants nearby others are simply ruins on top of a hill that you can hike to.
Some old residences may also be owned by the state and are housing some kind of official institution. The official residence of the German president for example
    is also a castle.

@@tktoptravel In German that are actually different words for castle...a "Schloss" which is the direct translation is basically some place some ruler built to brag (seriously, those things were a thing for a while and a lot of them are barely 200 years old). Then there are "Festungen" which is the closest translation to fortress, which is a structure built mostly for defence...you find those usually at the coast and in some mountains. And finally there is the "Burg", which is basically a castle which were built for defence, meaning the thing which inspired the castles later on. Those are the truly old buildings which are truly worth seeing. The most famous one is "Burg Eltz" which is special not just because it is so old, but also because it is still owned by the original family.
If you want to see a lot of the old one, take a tour down the Rhine.

At 04:10 you have "the German".
This statue is called "Hermann der Cherusker" a soldier and later officer at the Roman Army (Legionär) who was actually called Arminius. He was born as a German, given to the Roman Empire to learn the Roman art of war. He later deserted the Legion and lead the German Tribes to fight the Roman Legions and defeat them. It was later told that he was the liberator of the German tribes. In the late 19th century he was made to be the Idol of the real German. The Statue stands at the assumed late border between the Roman Empire and the "free" Land of the German tribes. He is looking west where the Empire was located but when build it was also a warning to France (the archenemy of Prussia at the time the monument was build).

So in elementary school we had a whole school trip to the museum and learned about culture of Germanic tripes at that time and how they won against the better organized and equipped Romans and all that.
Now I study in Detmold and everywhere I go Hermann is standing above giving his fuck you to the world.
I don't know if other people find it funny but I personally think it's hilarious.

You did it! Great job guys! Honestly thank you for that reaction - video!
But guys as i mentioned in the suggestion you could turn on the subtitles and see the name of every place and of course a short explanation.
After enjoying your video i`ve got a simple question : When do you guys come over and visit germany! ;-)
Again thank you for fulfilling the suggestion!
    That was great!
If you´re interested i´ve got another suggestion :
In order to see what travelling in germany could be like please take a look and reaction to the video from the channel : FLYING THE NEST the title of the video is : DER TOP ORT IN DEUTSCHLAND ZU BESUCHEN !! (about 490.000 views).
The channel is based in Australia so all the stuff is in english. These two nice people from Australia travel all over the world (currently they are three because they got a baby recently) the videos from these channel are so well done......but explore on your own!
Again love and respect from germany!

To really get to know our country you would have to live 3 or 4 years and also travel the country! I would like that too, the story with you is not old but also interesting.😀😃😄😁🤣

09:07 is a train station close to my home I've spent there some time - it's the trainstation from Hanover. You see bigger cities like Hamburg, Dreseden, Frankfurt, Berlin (my mum's hometown I adore), Cologne the cathedral you thought looked golden in the night shot is a famous sight there, then a lot of smaller cities. Yeah in Germany the red tinted roofs were common nowadays it's changing up a bit, we redid our roof 8 years ago it's shinny black now before it was red. I'm not sure if it's common in the US, because in Sitcoms and the textbook you only read about malls, but in Germany it us actually common to have 1 large street where cars aren't allowed and you have all these shops to do your shopping (H&M, Adidas, Calvin Klein) you're just strolling through the street doing some shopping. Also yeah here are many castles, one former school of mine actually used to be a castle and was even called castle school while I was a student my school actually had a 500th Year Anniversary we celebrated. Really enjoyed your reaction. Also about the castles they used to be the homes from dukes and such, however nowadays they are mostly museums where you can view how royalty used to live. I remember visiting the Charlottenburger castle in Berlin as a child seeing beds and I thought that those are children beds but no they were the beds of adults, people used to be so much smaller than they are nowadays.😅 some are event locations as well you can rent it for weddings for example castle weddings are pretty popular around here.

so many castles like this one are hotels, or owned by schools for trips for the children so they can go and live there for a week and A LOT A LOT are museums.
even more of course are just ruins you can visit. and some are still lived in by the people who owned them for centuries xD same with some of the huge palaces often you can visit as a museum like 3/4 of the castle or palace and 1/4 is still lived in by the family owning it and they basicly pay all the reperations and the maintenence by the money coming from visitiors

The statue at minute 7:29 was :
The Kyffhäuser Monument depicts Emperor William I and Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa.
The monumental memorial was erected between 1890 and 1896 in honor of Kaiser Wilhelm I. It is the third largest monument in Germany and belongs to a series of Emperor William monuments which were built in his honor after his death. Apart from a equestrian statue of the Emperor and a crowned tower, which is a good vantage point, the monument also contains an image of Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa. According to a legend, the former emperor of the Holy Roman Empire is supposed to sleep in the Kyffhäuser and wait for the unification of Germany. So in the double monument Frederick I awakes slowly, because this unification was achieved by Emperor William I.

Some of oldest cties in Europe IMO are build on square plans becouse at first these were the plans of Roman empire military camps (squares) and some of the newer cities were build arround early medieval churches (more "circular" plans) And squares can be easily walled, protected and some kind of "circular" plans can be used most easily in hills areas where most of the fortresses and castles were build. A forest steep hill sorrounded by water is the best place to made fortress.

The castles are still from historical times, when Germany was divided into several hundreds of small principalities. Each principality, of course, had its prince who lived in such a castle. Many are preserved, some are only ruins and in those that have survived, you can find museums, restaurants or they are even still inhabited. Many castles are located on mountains, so that the enemy could be spotted from afar.

Hamburg is absolutley breathtaking. You're reacting to in minute 7:44 to 7:55 the mirrored, sharp scaled building is the new "Elbphilharmonie". And the view over the waterside (with the fountain) towards the city centre is the Binnenalster. The city centre of Hamburg is one of the greatest possibilities to walk, watch and be amazed, in all of Germany. If you're ever in Germany, Hamburg is an absolute must do, so as Munich and Berlin with its clubs and szenes. Regarding your question as to whether the castles in Germany are inhabited: Unfortunately, many castles have fallen into disrepair and are now just ruins. However, there are many associations that are committed to the preservation of castles and offer guided tours of castles. And a few castles are also (partially) inhabited. There are also castles that are reused for other things, like the castle in Friedberg (Hesse). One part is used as a school, one part is privately inhabited, everyone is allowed to enter the castle garden and the keep (large tower) is open to visitors

You need to take a look at Schloss Neuschwanstein. It's not a very old castle, but it might remind you at something. It's literally a fairytale castle, the fairytale castle, because the Disney Castles we see in all the Disney parks around the world, are based on Schloss Neuschwanstein. And this one for instance is owned now buy the state of Bavaria. They own most of the castles in Bavaria and like Neuschwanstein, are used as museums and tourist attractions. The money earned with it goes into restautations and stuff. It's like that with a lot of castles in Germany. Most estate is property of the local community or land. Some are still owned by heirs of old aristocratic familys, but even then they often open it for the public or rent in to the community.

Before Bismarck united Germany it was devided into a lot small states. Each nobel owned some land and had their own law and sometime currency.
To show of their wealth they built castles. Now most of them are museums, some are schools/universities/hotels/... and some are owned by the descendants.
But back to history. If you wanted protection from a noble you had to live on their land, best the city.
You asked why so many houses where near each other. It's because back then the location you were living at was also a symbol of wealth.
In the center were the wealthiest and most respected people. The law usually gave them many advantages.
So you wanted to live in the center and the city needed therefore a lot of houses and flats.
Hope I could answer some questions :) and sorry for my bad English ^^
