Absolutely epic! Thanks for the lesson on different knife steels and for bringing back some memories from my childhood. I think you nailed the essence of Mr Roger’s Neighborhood.
I snapped the fire steel the first time and i have experience outdoors with larger ferro rods and flint and steel . I found using the whole tinder piece works alot better its a one and done item .
So good video man! Only advice I could give. Would be to sincerely fluff that amount of tinder up. Can you get that, about the size of a cotton ball! And for striking. With someone’s who is unexperienced with, fire steel. Use the aowl.
In case you did not know, when you open the corkscrew, there is a small hole behind where it nests in the handle (close to the joint of the corkscrew). That is designed to hold a pin. I find having one there is handy for splinter removal.
Top Tip - After you have fluffed up the tinder, gently scrap some 'filings' from the rod onto the tinder without creating sparks... Then light 🔥 it up! 😉 Atb Gus 👍
Nice Overview, your experience with the FireAnt Stuff confirms my suspicions about it. While the ferro rod is quite capable the tinder is just too small for an inexperienced user. I guess you would have to use other stuff in combination with it. Like natural tinder or aluminium foil behind it to catch the sparks.
Those mini tools for the corkscrew are great. I just wish there was some clever way to get a mini screwdriver with both a flat and Phillips bit on one tool. A definite challenge that some clever person could devise a solution!
We are all forever students, buddy 😉 Glad you found my video useful, I hope you have a better first-experience with these tiny fire rods then I did! ❤️
6:22 "let's put the thing in the thing". CLEARLY you haven't received your Thesaurus for Lost Words. The proper phrase... "Let's put the thingamabob in the whoozeewhatzit." *taking a bow of thank you to the huge standing ovation at my genius*
I have a Swiss Champ which has the 91mm Plus Scales [w/ Pen and Straight Pin]. Also there is a secret channel on the lower end of the scale [ w/o the Swiss Cross on it] that -- when opened up -- you can put a shorter Teeezers, so you can put the Firefly 2'' long ferrocerium stick in the old Tweezer slot. The Firefly stick has a weakness -- it must be supported from the back when striking or it will snap in half. Have not tried the Fire Ant.
That fire ant may work in desperation, but I think a regular fire rod and cotton ball would be better. Use the awl surface or the wire stripper on that fire ant rod.
The Camper is the same as the Hiker. Only difference is with the Hiker you get a Phillips head screw driver and with the the Camper you get the cork screw.
Fluff the tinder much more, it needs more are/volume. And while it seems natural to hold the rod still and scrape the steel against it, you should do the opposite. Hold the steel still and quickly/sharply draw the rod back against it, it will throw sparks better.
Didn't look easy at all. Yeah I may have more outdoors experience but I can't think of anything I would have done differently than you did. Perhaps more of the tinder has to be cut off?? All the best to you!
Thank you buddy! Someone in the comments suggested I try adding some natural burning material in my next attempt, maybe it'll help the tinder catch a flame and get a fire going 😊
@@Practical_EDC thanks achi, yeah, that'll likely work. Just a shame it doesn't work easier as a truly stand alone system. I bought one of these a few months ago. Oh well, good to know either way. All the best to you.

So you're saying next time just open up the entire tinder piece and fluff it up before I start throwing sparks at it?
@@Practical_EDC yes more surface area
Got it 🤘

Thanks buddy! Will try ❤️
Another great video as always! Congratulations on 1k subs. I hope to stay a part of this community for a long time.
Thank you brother ❤️
I hope so too!

I do carry a pin in my Compact and in my Explorer, didn't think about adding one to my Huntsman but that's actually a good idea, thank you ❤️

That actually sounds like a very solid advice! Thanks for tip buddy, will try this later today when I get home 🔥
Congratulations on hitting 1k brother 👏 🥳 🍻
Thanks for sharing,

Support ferro rod with finger. Strike with wire bending notch
Will try! Thanks for the tip ❤️
I now know what it will look like when I try to use the Fire steel for the first time.

How 'bout reading the instructions ?
What!? Real men don't need to read instructions.🤠😛
😂😂😂
Okay video.
pull the ferro rod not the scraper so the sparks stay on aim
I think I need a bigger ferro rod 🤘

That iron rod is awkwardly small as well..

Люблю виксы, их у меня 10 штук, но эта тема - не моё... Займитесь каким-нибудь полезным делом.
