So many Shonen anime rip off the Vegeta redemption arc without realizing that it has a lot more to do with who Goku is than who Vegeta is until the Majin arc. Basically all of Goku's friends had attacked him with lethal force at some point in his life--Even Bulma and Chichi shot him the day they met. He's had to come to terms with some serious blood on his own hands from an early age, and so can't allow himself to see other killers as irredeemable, even if he despises the act of killing and avoids it whenever he can. He's managed to make peace with monsters, like Android 8 who was created specifically to destroy him, so he has a reason to believe in ideals of mercy and diplomacy.

Besides Zuko, Impmon is the only redemption I’ve seen in Children’s media that feels well developed and earned. The fact they acknowledge that the people he hurt don’t forgive him right after he switches and he doesn’t expect them to speaks volumes

To me Jeri father also had a good redemption arc and a more realistic one when we had that one parent who starts off angry or keep apart from us only to realize the real reason behind it and seeing things in a new light knowing much like us are parents might have problem their self's and needed help but still seeing us as that last good thing from their past or a tragic reminder of what they lost as sometimes a parent will realize their mistake and try and fix things for their kids

It's not just that, it's the fact the show let him fail. He gets to the point he can save Jeri and at least begin to forgive himself...only for his actions to bite him and ultimately cause him to fail. He fails to save Jeri, he fails to fulfill the one mission he gave himself as a requirement to start forgiving himself. And the show just...lets that be the end of it. Yes, at the end of the show, Jeri shows some level of forgiveness but Impmon/Beelzemon still failed in his ultimate objective and the show was PERFECTLY FINE letting that happen, there was no sudden power up or anything to give Beelzemon the strength to go on and save Jeri or any of that...he just...failed. His lines after the kernel reforms are...beyond powerful, it shows how saving Jeri is now EVERYTHING to him.

Impmon was, essentially, the best thing Digimon ever did. Full stop. Actions have consequences, and killing especially does. The entire time I was watching this as a kid, I kept rolling my eyes expecting Leomon to just "come back". I think an important detail is that death is final in the Tamers universe. Not only that Beelzemon consumes the data of all of his victims to grow stronger. The other digimon partners, while also killers, don't eat the data of other fully sentient beings. It's been my understanding that dead digimon can reform in the digital world, even if it's as a new creature, so Beelzemon is effectively consuming souls. I feel that adds a lot of weight to his crimes and eventual redemption.

I agree, especially when he uses Fist of the Beast King to save Jeri. He knew he needed more power, but instead of dirty deals, basically selling his own soul for selfish gains, he was willing to give his own life to make up for his most grave mistake, and I believe Leomon's soul accepted that and gave his power willingly, bringing Impmon's story full circle.

So there’s a yes and no in that.
Canonically for digimon through the whole series, when digimon die they turn into digital particles/data. That data turns to digitama ie the eggs that you see, but in tamers they are absorbing that data meaning that a lot of those digimon are truly dead.

It's a Schrodinger's Cat situation. The Digital World reset & we have no clue if any of the Digimon are still alive, or if that entire world went on to take a new form & the Digimon they knew are effectively gone. That being said, one of the movies for Tamers is supposed to take place after the end of the series. No hope in really figuring out what happened, though, because the movie never explains how they all got their Digimon back. On top of that, there has been some sort of weird, low key idea running through all the shows since Tamers that all the series' are in a shared multiverse, with the Digital World being the connecting node for all of them. That is why Ryo was in this series, as well as other Digimon media, how "ghosts" of the kids from several other series appeared in Fusion/ X-ros Wars & the Digimon Adventure Tri movies heavily implied that one of the villains from that film actually created the Digimon Sovereign in the first place, which are only important to this specific series. No clue of what the order is supposed to be, or what the logic is to how every single Digimon series manages to fit together realistically, but it is always supposed to be the same Digital world, every time, apparently.

Impmon/Beelzemon is easily my favorite character in Digmon Tamers. He started off a comic relief bully who sold his own soul for power and became one of the most despicable antagonists in the show. However, after he was defeated by Gallantmon and returned back to the human world, he was so filled with guilt over his past transgressions that he is driven to redeem himself by saving the person he wronged. Unfortunately, he is ultimately denied his redemption by Jeri and is almost killed by the D-Reaper. He came so close only to fail because the person he wronged cannot forgive him.

  • @christopherbennett5858
    @christopherbennett5858 2 роки тому +130

Yeah, Impmon is a good redemption story.
I think modern day redemption issues are threefold. One is that there’s a feeling that there needs to be a redemption regardless of whether or not the character is suited for it. Two is that the worst ones are often for those who were the head of the villains who, by design, should be the least likely to sway compared to the underlings and, finally, a lack of maturity/time devoted to see it through.
With some popular series like Avatar bringing their villains to the good side, I feel like creators may think that just having a redemption arc will guarantee a hit. So, it’s added in.
Then there’s the fact that, whilst Impmon was a personal threat who killed their friend, he wasn’t so powerful that reaching a hand of friendship out was the only way to stop him. Gallantmon alone could whoop his leather clad behind but he was spared because the mental turmoil was too much already. They gave time to show Impmon’s entire story. Not just throwing in a sob story either offscreen or at the last minute. We see everything.
And the fact that no one will forgive him and he’s not caring because people, especially Jeri, are suffering? That says so much more than some shows that offer forgiveness because of some messed up reasoning or because the plot demands it. Then, it shows that Jeri and the others don’t need to forgive him to win. Jeri only starts to forgive him because she is mentally in a better place and, because of his actions, held less animosity towards him.
Also, it’s nice that Impmon’s tamers are canonically the youngest just under Suzie. They were just bratty children that needed to grow up and realise that their behaviour drove their friend away and they have Impmon back in their lives on their terms and because he was ready to make amends.
What did I mean by some shows having a lack of maturity? Well, some stories can accidentally get too hyped up about villains and have them redeemed on principles like “family must get along and forgive”, “they’re the love interest so they must be redeemed” or “in order to recover from the trauma, you must forgive to move on”. All ideas that sound nice on paper… until you notice that these can not only not work in practice because that’s not how people work, but also it makes the victims of said crimes feel like they have to play nice to be “fixed”. That can be extremely ghoulish.
So, overall, Impmon’s story is a very good one. Not top tier but it has the maturity to show children that the road to redemption is rough, that one good deed won’t fix everything, but that you shouldn’t become better and do good to absolve yourself from guilt. Rather, just take the hard but doable journey to become batter and make amends with those you have wronged because it’s the right thing to do.

Another series that did it fine (not as good as this, but in a way that technically makes sense), is Kamen Rider Gaim- which is ironic, because ever since then, they've done repeated villain switching sides stories & they tend to be the worst part of a lot of seasons. It's also made by the same company that does Digimon, funny enough.
Anyway, for a lot of the early season, the stakes weren't that high, all the characters thought they were just playing a game & the one recurring villain/ rival character was kind of a bratty asshole who was willing to do just about anything in order to win & kept saying that the only thing he cared about and the only redeeming human quality was strength- nothing else. Over time, though, they show what his life was like that made him the way he is, when the stakes start getting higher & lives actually start ending up at risk, he starts helping the heroes more & more & you see a whole other side of the character. He only respects strength, he doesn't actually care solely about that one aspect, like he claims, he has actual, very strong moral lines that he will not cross, he keeps people motivated when all hope seems lost & he is the first one to assess a situation, come up with a plan & get moving towards his goals. Even at the end of the series, he actually sacrifices his own life to save everyone else (in kind of a douchey, asinine way, but still). But, that kind of redemption arc only works because it's well established that all the characters thought that what was happening early on wasn't really that serious, so his asshattery could be easily set aside & forgiven, once they're all put into a situation where their true colors shine.

Renamon takes the number one spot for me. But Impmon is a high contender as well. It goes to show just how good Tamers was as a Digimon season that we can have so many really well-written characters. I particularly like how they go out of their way to make each of the Tamers' relationships with their digimon distinct from one another. For example, Takato and Guilmon are like boy and his dog. But Henry and Terriermon are more like big bro little bro. Renamon and Rika are like two coworkers learning to become good friends.
Other Digi series from what I remember don't really do this so much. Ghost Game does it a bit, but that's also why a lot of people compare Ghost Game to Tamers, and it's also why a lot of people (myself included) had such high hopes for Ghost Game, and were also sorely disappointed at just how episodic and meaningless it ultimately became. Especially early on, it set itself up to be a truly amazing season. Horror-focused, fantastic new and original digimon designs, new evolutions that nobody knew about, the Digimon being treated as their own people and having their own cultures within the human world, multiple evolution paths, GulusGammamon, fantastic music, etc. It's sad that none of that really goes anywhere in this series, as far as I've seen (I've given up on watching it after getting bored with its episodic nature and no overarching story). It doesn't help that they're using a lot of member berries to garner attention. "Remember Myotismon? Y'all like Myotismon, right? Here he is! But he only shows up in one episode and doesn't really do anything, so he's just a pale imitation of the original guy." They sprinkle in references and easter eggs to other series, but they often don't mean anything. I hear Piedmon shows up, but I'm not interested anymore. Another Adventure Original character showing up for the member berries, but I'll bet he just exists for this one episode too. At least with Clockmon and Mummymon, they show up to do different things than what they did in their original debuts, and at least they show up again in later episodes. All the other member berry characters just feel like watered down versions of the OG.
Sorry about the rant. I can't help it sometimes.
At the very least, I'm hoping Ghost Game at least sets a precedent for the next Digi series to keep going in this direction of well-written characters and Digimon being treated as full characters onto themselves rather than just talking pets for the humans.

Specially when Jerry flips him off and stays, because they didn't the easy/cheap: "That was Leomon's technique" and then Jerry wants to leave because she remembers him.

I feel like a lot of shows or viewers confuse "forgiveness" with "redemption".
Like "Oh the main characters forgave the evil guy all their misdeeds, so they are now redeemed" and then they expect everyone else to just forget all the evil things said character has done, because they are now "good".

I mean, forgiveness simply depends on the people involved in the situation. Just because you don't forgive someone doesn't mean other people wouldn't. Even Jesus hung out with sinners and criticized his own followers. I've forgiven people for things other people wouldn't.

    • @anubis7457

Having some characters forgive while others don’t (at least at first) is a great character dynamic, such as with Toph vs the rest of the Gaang in regards to Zuko.
Toph never knew Zuko or how many times or how deeply he’d betrayed them in the past, and she’s a practical person who knows Aang NEEDS a firebending teacher. That’s why out of all of them, she’s the one who tries to reach out to him.
Admittedly, it gets her feet burned and she crawls away in terror but he didn’t mean to do that… and once she calms down she’s able to realize Zuko hadn’t meant to either.

I dunno, I loved both and it was often saddening when a lot of people just never seemed to even give Digimon a chance because it 'wasn't Pokemon'.

  • @LuckyTheReviewer

Honestly, never really thought about how much Digimon was constantly experimenting with it's series when compared to Pokemon till this video brought it up. Where as Pokemon was pretty much similar throughout the seasons, just new regions people and characters but still following Ash and Pikachu, where as Digimon was always trying new things with only series 1 and 2 being connected because the 2nd anime was a sequel to the first and even then the only two characters that returned to be a part of the main cast of characters were the two youngest from the former group. Not to mention the 2nd anime introducing Armor digivolution and DNA Digivolution, Season 3 having the cards, season 4 having the digimon spirits and hybrid digivolution, and then season 5 with the main character literally punching digimon. Not to say all those newly introduced concepts stuck or was enjoyed by the fanbase but at least Digimon was will to try and change things up and, if anything, is probably in a better position that Pokemon given the current day issue Pokemon has of having stuck to the same formula for so long that people now are split on if Pokemon should change or keep doing what it's always done.

What's even crazier and something that never even fully clicked for me until I was explaining the games to my brother, very few of the digimon games actually include any form of monster taming.
The first digimon used basically 3D tomagachi mechanics as that's what digimon began as: a subset of tomagachis.
The second game was the first one to use monster-taming mechanics, and even then it more directly took after SMT by having you raise the mon's affinity with gifts before combat so they choose to join you.
3 instantly diverges and becomes a traditional RPG. You pick the 3 digimon comprising your party through 'booster' packs similar to choose your pokemon at the start of the games, but it's a batch of 3 and those digimon are who you get for the entire game.
This continues in a similar vein from here on, with the only other digimon games that involve taming being the story games, using the data-scan mechanic, and in lesser form through survive's free battles.
In the many game releases digimon has had, only maybe like 3-5 games, if that, involve monster taming/collection mechanics

To me what I loved about Ipmon’s journey is the way he attained his power. Soo many shows like this use the power of friendship as the end-all be-all for ultimate power boosts. But, Impmon said “fuck that” and took a deal with a devil to get it and the weight of how he got that power was treated with soo much respect. It was a culmination of everything he wanted to be, and because of how much he suffered, I legitimately felt happy for the dude. In another show, the good guys would’ve beaten him showing friendship prevails, but he lives and gets the chance to use it for good. Even when he reconnects with his tamers, the Beelzemon form isn’t replaced looked down on, it’s enhanced, his final form if you will.
I love that detail of his journey. It’s a huge part of redemption, taking responsibility for your actions. It’s as if the writer was saying “you got what you wanted, but you lost yourself. Now use that gift to make things right”
So much of that nuance would’ve been lost if he attained a different form like what Frontiers did with Koichi’s redemption in the next season.

He's envious, jealous and thirsty for power, but at the same time wants to be loved. His arc was really well written. He starts how a little shit just for comic relief, then turns into a killing machine, then goes into anti-heroic terrain until becomes a hero at the end.

Aside from the video games (though all four of the main series games were janky in their own different ways, the first had a terrible battle system, poor localization and seemed unfinished (with stuff like like MetalEtemon, playable Myotismon and other tamers being found in the game's data and other oddities), the second had terrible dungeon design, the third was full of backtracking and somehow _had a worse training system than the first_ (and as a personal nitpick, I don't like how the area design is in general, I prefer how the first game handled its area design) and the fourth was just generally bad), Digimon was really set up to fail in the US all around.

A lot of Villains that go through their Redemption Arc don't do really anything that makes the viewers feel bad. THey may be bad in the context of the universe, but not something that makes the viewer feel like it is unforgibable. "Oh no, he killed a random citizen without a name! Anyways, time to add him to the group of heroes!", "Oh no, he tried to kill the protagonists! But everything is good because he failed.".
Impmon upon evolving into Beelzebumon ends doing something that hits the viewer in the gut: He actually kills a main character, Leomon, while all his friends watched, including his Tamer. This is accentuated even more by happens afterward, with Takato and Guilmon losing control completely by the pure rage against the murderer of their friend and evolving into Megidramon, something that almost makes them destroy the entire world.
This last part isnt exactly Beelzebumon's fault, so the viewer can't really fault him for Takato and Guilmon almost destroying the world, and in fact he is the one to stop them, but it still makes teh viewer feel like everything is his fault.
It makes Beelzebumon feel as if his actions are unforgivable, that he crossed the line and there is no coming back. After you kill a Main Character, you can't simply take their place.
THis makes his Redemption Arc feel even stronger, since not only he now has to make ammends and set things right with the rest of the cast, but he needs to make up to the audience, that feel like Dukemon should have simply killed him.
Making a character feel unforgivable for the audience itself is a very important part of a good Redemption Arc that a lot of stories fail to do.

That's something that made this show mean so much more to me than the previous seasons. There was real emotional depth and it touched on areas of depression that the other shows would never get so deep into, past something like a character being sad and one person talking to them to cheer them up. When the weight of what he's done sets in, Impmon is really broken. He was someone who was routinely overlooked and abused, and he realizes he just devastated another sad, lonely person, on top of killing someone who was only trying to be a protector. He sees how he let his anger turn him into something terrible, someone abused becoming an abuser. There's also the overwhelming existential crisis of a monster devouring the world, not out of malice or wanting to "rule the world", but like a fungus breaking down a slice of fruit because that's just what it does, and the main characters even at their strongest seem to barely be able to do more than just narrowly avoid death in every encounter, instead of just a deus ex machina digivolution saving the day. It was mature in ways I didn't really see in other shows made for people my age, and I respected it a lot for that.

Honestly, I felt genuinely intimidated by Beelzemon's unhinged rampage when I rewatched this show again as a grown man. There's something so distressing about seeing this pitifully ineffective side character's turn into this unhinged maniac. We know Impmon, we likely sympathize with him, but in that moment, he's just... gone, and it's genuinely frightening.
Imagine my surprise when I then found myself completely invested in his redemption arc afterwards. It helps that he genuinely believes that he's beyond forgiveness even after he regains the trust of his allies. He's willing to throw everything away in order to undo the damage he's caused, not because he believes that he can earn forgiveness, but because he feels that he can't live with himself if he hesitates to come to their aid after everything he's done. Redemption isn't something you simply earn and then move on, it's something you fight to uphold and carry with you for the rest of your life.

I grew up on the first 3 seasons of Digimon (even if I wasn't even born for the 3rd season) and honestly.... Seasons 2 and 3 are my favorites, I love the wacky slice of life you get from both of them and I feel the characters develop a lot during both seasons. To this day my two favorite Digimon are Guilmon and Patamon, and by extension Galantmon and Angemon. I'm with most people on the Impmon redemption in thinking it was earned and he may not be my favorite Digimon but, he is one of my favorite characters in the series because of how much he grows. Beelzemon is definitely top 10 Digimon for me and I just wish these franchise would give us video games where we can play through these stories as we want. Give us the Pokemon Ash Grey treatment where we can choose to follow the story to a T or diverge enough to feel we impact something but overall have things play out the same in the end.

Glad to see Impmon get some respect; and I absolutely agree his story-arc is a case of 'this is how you do redemption'. Digimon did right 20yrs ago a lot of series be it anime or from our neck of the world can't be bothered today. While the Digimon series has always had hit and miss writing, there's a reason I gravitated to it while Pokemon was just, there for me. The more mature story-telling; and yeah my age (early teen) may have had something to do with it some, overall I just found Digimon more enjoyable. I'm actually amazed the english localization of the first three Anime wasn't butchered to hell and back, and actually kept a lot of the grim material in even if they went around some stuff for censorship reasons. Digimon does what Pokemon can't. Now take my last bit with a grain of salt, I'm not hating on Pokemon, just citing why 'I' personally was not drawn to it as I was Digimon, and having a little bit of fun.

Digimon Tamers in my opinion still is the best season of Digimon pretty much because of how good the writing actually was. It explored more darker themes too, including permadeath (which was a first), as well as consequences that can follow from that. Impmon's single act is what becomes the catalyst for so much chaos and destruction down the road. And yes your analysis of Impmon and Beelzemon and their whole character arc was dead on. Great analysis.

  • @RealJohnnyAngel

Impmon digivolving into Beelzimon at the end to fight, with the blessing of his partners, still gives me tingles. I splurged on a masterpiece figure of him in blast mode that came with a little Impmon as well. I think his arc holds up really well because at every stage, even if you don't condone it, you can understand what he's doing, and might even feel bad for him too. Tamers was a toyetic franchise entry from forever ago, but it's still so much better than so much shit we are still getting on tv and streaming that's taken seriously and given awards that they don't deserve. it's not a masterpiece or even particularly excellent, but it's so solidly and consistently competent that it puts a lot of stuff to shame.

I really like this video, and Impmon, but I think there's a detail that was left out.
While Beelzemon was trying to do the right thing in the last arc, I think there was a bit of a selfish motivation. We see this after Jeri rejects him, and he is desperately pounding the shield, begging her to let him save her. "I need to save you." It's heartbreaking, but also shows us the flaw in Beelzemon. That he hasn't yet changed on a fundamental level.
Impmon hated himself for how easily he was kicked around, and tried to lord the little power he had over those who would let him get away with it in order to make himself feel better, and it didn't work. Beelzemon hated himself for killing Leomon, tried to use his genuine power to save his partner in order to make himself feel better, and it didn't work. In both cases, there's a focus on power, and its use.
The final moment that seals Impmon's redemption is not a moment of power. It is one of humility. It is not through a grand gesture that he redeems himself, but through a simple and earnest apology. Impmon took many great steps during the D-Reaper arc, and I don't wish to belittle that. I simply believe that the point of his story was that to truly redeem oneself, it's not merely the ends that need to change, but also the means.

    • @thewarner2139
      @thewarner2139 2 роки тому

      Yeah, no.
He wasn't trying to save Jeri out of a sense of retaining power or control. A few episodes earlier, when he got Blast Mode, he outright said he would be fighting for what was right and with righteous purpose; not the selfish desire to get stronger.
He felt genuinely bad about killing Leomon and wanted to make amends to set the world right. He felt like he ruined her life and put her in that situation; which is partly true. He was always going to feel guilty but he didn't save her out of a misguide attempt to make himself feel better.
