  • In this video, I turn a Herringbone blank that I built in a previous video. The pen is stunning and there are some tips while turning that I believe will be beneficial to all turners.

    Hi Bob.... I too used the aluminium angle but glued the two pieces of timber together on it while they were still long before cutting all the pieces to size on the bandsaw. Much less glue mess and a lot quicker I found. Loving your channel. Keep up the good work and the inspiration. Cheers, Tas. Australia

    Hi RJBWoodTurner, that pen turned out very nice! I make laminated tool handles and so a herringbone pattern tool handle sounds like fun. I may not be the first one to answer your challenge because I am in the middle of a shop redesign but certainly plan to by the end of Summer and will share some pics of the finished handle.

      Herring bone tool handle blank is on the way, made three of them. I have to admit, I did not use the double line technique like you did on your pen blank but the points seem to line up in the middle. Oh well, live and learn. Should get to you by the end of next week.

    That is beautiful looking.
    I never noticed before, but it looks like you are just using a jacobs chuck in the head stock. And you are using the threaded rod and knurled nut to tighten as opposed to a mandrel saver. Did you have a video on how you came up with your setup?

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  8 років тому

      +Make Crazydays Your correct, that is the setup I'm using. I don't have a video and I came up with this out of necessity.
      I usually use one of the mandrel saver mandrels but mine got bent when I tried to turn a large piece of antler. I needed to turn a pen so I cobbled this setup together and have been using it since.
      I hope to purchase a new mandrel saver soon.
      If you're interested, I can put together a small video on it of go over it in a follow up video.
      Regards,
      Bob

    • @MakeCrazydays
      @MakeCrazydays 8 років тому +1

      I wouldn't mind hearing how you like it. We found since using a mandrel saver we haven't had an issue with bending mandrels, since the pressure is applied to the bushings. I'm kind of curious how you had it get bent. As to the jacobs chuck, that seems like a great idea.

    • @RJBWoodTurner

    I turned my first pen today. Someone said to watch you for the best way. Can you tell me the ones to start on, you have so many?

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  6 років тому

      +John Johnson, Jr I use to recommend the Slimlines because there I expensive. However, you have to turn two blanks to make one. Now I recommend something like the Sierras, Monarchs, or Wall Streets.
      There a single blank, not super expensive, and look amazing when turned.
      Regards,
      Bob

  • @conritewing162
    @conritewing162 6 років тому +1

    I’m curious could you soak the blanks in something like cactus juice and still get it to turn and buff up correctly? I am just starting to learn about turning so I’m sorry if that’s a silly question.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  6 років тому

      Cactus juice is only for use in vacuum chambers. It replaces the voids in a piece of wood when the air is pulled from it.
      If you use cactus juice, the blank will finish just fine. Stabilized blanks are a little harder to turn but work very well with lathe tools.
      Regards,
      Bob

  • @sofiadragon1979

    Just curious, what is the average amount of CA glue coats that you put on a blank to get that glass like finish? I can't seem to get it quite yet.

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  8 років тому

      +JR Lenard Nello J.R.,
      I probably used 8 or 9 coats of thin C/A then followed that with 3 coats of medium.
      Regards,
      Bob

    • @sofiadragon1979
      @sofiadragon1979 8 років тому +1

      Thanks, I think that, that might be what my issue is, I'll try that with my next pen.

    • @turnersparadise8368
      @turnersparadise8368 8 років тому +1

      Of course everyone has different techniques, but what I have found that works for me is around 24 really thin coats of thin CA. I use a paper towel "swab" like Bob does but just put a little on the end and give it a quick wipe. I do not use accelerator, just let it spin about 60 seconds then reverse the swab and add the next coat. I go through 12 swabs. I like this method because it really builds up in thin smooth coats and you don't have to really worry about burning through the CA when micro-meshing. I have never had any luck using medium glue except as a filler. Probably because I don't use accelerator.

    • @sofiadragon1979
      @sofiadragon1979 8 років тому +1

      +Tenspeed TheBikeHanger Same here when it comes to the lack of accelerator, I'll try that technique also and see which one I like better. And I mean come on pens are too fun to not try new things out anyway right lol

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  8 років тому +1

      +Tenspeed TheBikeHanger Thank you for chiming in on this. It's always good to hear other turners methods. This kind of exchange is where I learn and get new ideas to try.
      Regards,
      Bob

    May I ask why do you flip the blank during sanding?

    • @RJBWoodTurner
      @RJBWoodTurner  6 років тому

      The grain lays down while sanding. Flipping it raises the grain and makes it sand much smoother.
