So true about Asian parents not wanting to see a doctor. About ten years ago I tried to convince my Japanese mother to see a doctor for what I hoped would be an annual physical examination. She didn't talk to me for two days -- and that was when I was staying at her home!
True. My mom is a doctor herself but refuses to see a doctor unless she has any heart problems. She has two sisters that aren't doctors and they want their kids to be doctors.
I'm a Bengali and I'm a teen who is deciding on what to do for the future as a career. I have asked my grandma many times on what I should be in the future and she ALWAYS says doctor. There was one day where I asked her again "What should I be in the future? ANYTHING BUT a doctor" Her: *nurse*
I used to go to a convenience store every morning before school from the age of 9 thru 18. There was an Asian lady there(she was the manager) that I became friends with, she literally watched me grow up. I would help her out at the store in my free time. She taught me a good work ethic. When I started talking about college, she said "You become doctor?". I was unsure of what I wanted to do at the time. Several times she tried to convince me to become a doctor lol. I didn't think much of it at the time, but I now know she said it out of love.
As Indian, I relate to the second part a lot. But my parents didn't want me to be a doctor. They wanted me to be a chartered accountant. I just wanna watch anime, read manga, light novels and webnovels.
I'm Afro-latinx and a first generation American. I'm in Uni for Marine Biology and my parents wanted us to become engineers (me and my brother) and my sister to be a doctor. So this joke always makes me laugh so hard because it hits home. 😅
I don't know if it is genetic or what, but as an Asian descendant I've seen my family's reluctance to go to the doctor first-hand: once my uncle had just developed an allergy by eating crab, so he was literally dying, but still refused to go the doctor even though the entire family was telling him to go. Well, I do not remember what we said (I'm not sure, but I think it was something to the effect of "Just imagine the problem you're going to cause if you don't go and then die", but don't remember it), but eventually he went to the doctor who later said that if he had taken any longer, he would've died. Worst thing is, my grandma, I think my mom once too, and even I have done similar things (though thankfully, in my case it really turned out to not be as serious as it could've been, which was really lucky on my side).
This is also a big part of why you rarely see any homeless Asians. Even if they don't become doctors or some other well-to-do career, the majority will at least be gainfully employed because the culture places great emphasis on not bringing shame to yourself, and even more importantly, your family.
It’s so true that it really hurts. My sister’s son just became a doctor because he grew up hearing his mom saying the same things over and over. Powerful brainwashing
As an indian, this is relatable. Our parents wanted us to be doctors. And not even any medical professional like a nurse or lab technician or a pharmacist, but a proper medical doctor. If we didn't make it to medical school then it's engineering of course.
As an aussie living 😅Toronto, Canada I’ve had many Asian friends say this exact thing. This bit was hilarious!!😂😂 Why isn’t your name in the title RONNY CHIENG! Well done. 👏💪👊
Mum never wanted me and my siblings to be a doctor. She didn't want us to be exposed to sickness all the time for a career so it was weird growing up with other Asian classmates who were so into wanting to be doctors; we'd all been conditioned to think of it as a non-glamorous profession.
My mom is a medical worker and she has this mindset too. I actually had no problem enrolling in med school if she insisted, but it's the opposite and I ended up in Computer Science haha. I'm asian too!
Yeah my mom is a scientist with a PhD and she never wanted me to get into the sciences or med school. I also did not have the aptitude for it. Growing up I was discouraged from careers that required too much education because my mom felt like she wasted her youth in a laboratory. They wanted me to get into a career that makes good money without extra education... unfortunately I'm the type who's good at school and not at real life 😂 it was so weird learning from other kids that their parents obsessed over them becoming doctors, lawyers, or engineers. my parents told me those jobs are too demanding and stressful and take too much time to study for lol
There's a reason why Asian parents don't go to see a doctor. Money. In the US, the medical bills are crazy expensive, and Asian parents know that. They want to save that money for their children.
@@finding_aether Really? I saw so many parents going to see the lawyers, esp recently. And yes, they insisted their children to become lawyers/doctors.
you don't need an appointment if you have a son as a doctor, just have them do a health check up for free at home. saves yourself the line and the money
Lol, my husband is Asian. We weren’t able to have kids but if we did, yes, I wanted them to be doctors. 😂 My husband is a first generation immigrant and it’s nearly impossible to get him to go to a doctor. Funny and true. 🙌🏻
Being a doctor/dentist in still developing asian countries is next to impossible, since things gone wrong easily and quickly, and in countries like China and Viet Nam, doctors are job that throw you into prisons very fast.
My Cuban grandma was exactly like this: Never wanted to go to the doctor herself, but really wanted my dad, and then me, to be doctors. I remember overhearing this conversation (roughly translated): "My son, it's not too late. You could still go to medical school in Salamanca." "Mom, I'm fifty-two. Yes it is!" This was particularly funny for me, because I was a huge hypochondriac as a kid; I didn't want to be anywhere near a sick person! Still, she got some consolation that we both got to be CALLED "Doctor" - we got PhDs instead.
Great-great grandfather was from Poland. He and his wife had 7 kids. Four became doctors, three became nurses. They totally bought the "becoming a doctor is the quickest way to turn this around."
My mom forced all my siblings and I to be in healthcare. Until now, she ask us to avoid patients if they have even the possibility of having a contagious disease. Yeah mom, doesnt work that way.
"Helping people is in the bottom list of reasons" made me LOL 😁

There was one day where I asked her again
"What should I be in the future? ANYTHING BUT a doctor"
Her: *nurse*
I wondered why this guys voice sounded so familiar then I rewatched my favorite Netflix show scissor seven then I found out hes the mc eng voice actor
As an Asian, this is soooo true
I used to go to a convenience store every morning before school from the age of 9 thru 18. There was an Asian lady there(she was the manager) that I became friends with, she literally watched me grow up. I would help her out at the store in my free time. She taught me a good work ethic. When I started talking about college, she said "You become doctor?". I was unsure of what I wanted to do at the time. Several times she tried to convince me to become a doctor lol. I didn't think much of it at the time, but I now know she said it out of love.
wkwkwk welcome to Asian parents love language 😂, they love you in in a very different way that hard to understand for us
As Indian, I relate to the second part a lot. But my parents didn't want me to be a doctor. They wanted me to be a chartered accountant. I just wanna watch anime, read manga, light novels and webnovels.
Asian accountant here. I still watch anime and read mangas in my free/off time. Goodluck!
Just wonderful and so true!!
This is also a big part of why you rarely see any homeless Asians. Even if they don't become doctors or some other well-to-do career, the majority will at least be gainfully employed because the culture places great emphasis on not bringing shame to yourself, and even more importantly, your family.
LOL this is underrated. This is comedy gold.
*_The ''Take people's money'' is so accurate... As an Asian here honestly._*
He is a really good actor as well. The short brought me here LOL
😹💯🔥this is spot on mate ….The obsession is real.
It’s so true that it really hurts. My sister’s son just became a doctor because he grew up hearing his mom saying the same things over and over. Powerful brainwashing
So true and funny😊
I am from Incia, and I can relate with this so hard
As an indian, this is relatable. Our parents wanted us to be doctors. And not even any medical professional like a nurse or lab technician or a pharmacist, but a proper medical doctor. If we didn't make it to medical school then it's engineering of course.
Very true 😂
"Because I want my kids to take other's people money obviously" Bruh 😂😂
The hospital does that not the doctor (Im sorry for taking stuff to literally) the doctor gets paid less
There's a reason why Asian parents don't go to see a doctor. Money. In the US, the medical bills are crazy expensive, and Asian parents know that. They want to save that money for their children.
But..
I dun live in US and i cannot get them to see a doctor either🤣
@@finding_aether Don't know then. I can only speak from my experience living in the US.
@@michaelsong5555 🤣🤣🤣 also lawyers. We cannot get them to see lawyers.
But. Study hard to be doctors and lawyers.
@@finding_aether Really? I saw so many parents going to see the lawyers, esp recently. And yes, they insisted their children to become lawyers/doctors.
@@michaelsong5555 lol. Times a-changing🤣.
Damn that hit me straight to the face
My mom (She's from China btw) wanted me to become a doctor litteraly to give her free appointments.
😂😂😂😂
you don't need an appointment if you have a son as a doctor, just have them do a health check up for free at home. saves yourself the line and the money
Lol, my husband is Asian. We weren’t able to have kids but if we did, yes, I wanted them to be doctors. 😂 My husband is a first generation immigrant and it’s nearly impossible to get him to go to a doctor. Funny and true. 🙌🏻
That’s true
Amazing 😉 😂
My parents wanted mo to either become a Lawyer, Docotor or an Engineer. But here I am 22 years old, playing video games for a living 😂
*cough*2 game engineer, sound engineer, software engineer *cough *
Again and Again Ronny Chieng is consistently hilarious
Great-great grandfather was from Poland. He and his wife had 7 kids. Four became doctors, three became nurses. They totally bought the "becoming a doctor is the quickest way to turn this around."
That is TRUE
My mom forced all my siblings and I to be in healthcare. Until now, she ask us to avoid patients if they have even the possibility of having a contagious disease. Yeah mom, doesnt work that way.
True 🤣
I'm Asian, but this never happened to me
My parents gave me liberty on what course shall I choose in the future
Welp, this made me LOL'ed
"Asian parents are the last group of ppl who u can convince them to see a doctor" 🤣🤣🤣
only true fans would know that this is a reupload
Casual fan. Reused, not re-uploaded.
Laughter is the best medicine....
Random person : why do u wanna be a doctor?
Me : because that's what my parents want
Totally true!!
Why is this so true 😭😂😭😂
My parents said I could become anything, so I became nothing
The more a parent push their kid to be a doctor, the least likely they actually want to see a doctor.
