      @@mewrrorball i think part of the southeast asian culture for males is to supress their feelings, because thats considered the 'noble' thing to do, and that feelings are for women and kids. So now we got a certain bunch of older generation folks who didnt think for themselves and didnt question anything, who continue the cycle of being emotionally disengaged because thats how theyre comfortable dealing with things.

      @Tech-vd7qs 3 роки тому +25

      @@TheHouseofChameleons i completely agree. Being appreciative and grateful is not mutually exclusive to identifying and learning mistakes, especially behavioural issues that are going to be passed on to children, as they grow into adults. And besides, its not only a generational, or only a cultural thing. There are individuals who come from these cultures and/or generations, who think for themselves, and choose to be better.

    I’m Mexican yet I relate to so many Asian things. A thing we Mexicans/natives say when talking about how much we love Asian food is how our ancestors were Asian before crossing the land bridge. “We used to be Asian”. We get confused for Asian a lot too. Much love.

      Eh. I did competition paintball for a couple years and worked at a place as a ref occasionally.
      Had a group of army guys turn up one day. Smashed them. They were easy to hit.
      Their main advantages were they instinctively used teamwork, but apart from that its a completely different game.
      When they set up to shoot at you, they presented a big target relatively. I could see their whole gun, most of their head and half an arm. Thats a LOT when im going to shoot your toe if you let it stick out.
      Paintballers scrunch themselves up and lean around something as to present a tiny target, and move to gain an angle on the other guy instead of shooting forward.

      @@slickstrings yea I play paintball regularly as well. We always get military guys out there navy and army mostly groups of 20 to 30, the regulars always run through them instantly but compared to the run of the mill rentals they are pretty good. They have a good understanding of cover fire and communication but the way we contort around the bunkers and crouch tiny to barely peak and snap shoot is too much for them. It's they are not trained to do that or fight against it because it's basically asking to get hit and when your training for a real combat operation it's probably not great to lose half the team every time they go out lol

Next to the cash register was a narrow hallway lined with industrial shelving. One side was groceries; the other side was bulk storage. I just got off work, so I needed to wash my hands before eating so I asked where the bathroom was. The hallway leading to the bathroom had storage boxes, a baby walker toy, a box of dolls and a princess house. I came back laughing my ass off at the thought of how disgusted most Ohioans would act at seeing all that, but me. Waaaaay before Canelo, the Mexican fighter came along, my family, her brother and his family, and his wife’s parents and her siblings and relatives all had a party, sat down, and watched Manny fight Oscar De La Hoya (the former famous Mexican fighter). This was Dec 2008 and we were in Brea Ca in one of my relative’s house. I remember we were rooting for our fighter who had represented Mexicans. The funny thing is that we respected Manny and praised him while he fought well. We knew it must have been difficult for him to reach that point in his career and we knew it was hard for him because he was a minority. We respected him so much. When he beat Oscar we were like, “Damn, he’s good! Good for him!”. We saw a lot of us in Manny. My family has all shades but because some of our family are darker-skinned, we related to him. He had trouble speaking English like our older relatives. He looked like some Mexicans from certain areas in Mexico. He had the same body type as a lot of Mexican men in Mexico. Same hair. Same demeanor. We respect people because it’s normal and necessary. But we also respect people even more when we learn about them and try to relate.

    We call America "mei guo" 美国 because it is an abbreviation from its full name "ya mei li jian gong he guo" 亚美利坚共和国, which directly translates to "American(ya MEI li jian) Republic(gong he guo)". The word "mei" also means beautiful but in this case it is more of a pronunciation thing.
    China's name "zhong guo"中国 is also an abbreviation from "zhong hua ren min gong he guo"中华人民共和国 which means "the Republic(gong he guo) of the Chinese people(ZHONG hua ren min)". The word "zhong" can mean middle, and also, centre. Since the language originated from China, the word here stands for "the centre of" probably the world, or at the time this name is invented, civilisation.

    Even in the UK asian community we had this thing called "birthday beats" where your friends and siblings would hit you (*lightly*) for every year of your age. Meaning if you're a late teen with a lot of friends, you are going to get battered throughout your birthday.

    • @benbottle4593
      @benbottle4593 2 роки тому

      It is really strange to me to find out that this is exactly the same in Switzerland, in my Swiss community.
      Well, I’m from a village, so the beatings were mostly everyday, but I know that in my city 20minutes away, it was exactly as you said.
      What is strange is that as a we Swiss, we’re not really warm to each other at least, we’re not really feisty either,
      but when you leave in a city and it’s your birthday, you got to beware when you’re in your own neighbourhood.

      That would be interesting - he had a beef with Trevor Noah, about Trevor stealing a joke, or something like that.

    2 ND generation here - grandparents from Eastern Europe. My parents told as what we wanted to be when we grew up! No choice...I understand exactly what each of these people are saying. So true ...I didn't do what my mother wanted. I wanted more. It took her 20 years and a doctorate before she forgave me!

    Dang, so Chinese named their Country: Middle Earth way before LoTR

    • @RonLarhz
      @RonLarhz 3 роки тому +8

      Chinese have multiple meaning.
      "middle" is also central/focus. Aka king/heart of asia. And it's not earth, guo is country.
      Also,for america, it's probably because of the pronunciation and language barrier. There is no real basis that ancient china think america is a beautiful country.

      @@RonLarhz I see, thx for the clarification, but in the phrase Middle Earth, Earth stands for Country, it's ancient dated English, and it was a joke

      Idk wts u r trying to say. I'm (sgrean) chinese. Earth can mean this blue planet or soil. Are u trying to mansplain to a native speaker what a mandarin word mean?
      I'm 90% sure context is lost in translation. Egoistic americans think "美国" 的"美" is a literal praise.... Lol...
      Not to mention china isnt even 中国 until new era, modernisation stepped in. It was always xxx dynasty(大xxx) or 中原"central plains".

    I bet Ronny Chieng knows perfectly well that the Chinese name for China means way more than "middle country", but then his joke would not work.
