Just for reference I've driven 125k miles plus with a comma device (comma 2 & 3 in 2017 Civic, 2020 Camry SE Hybrid, 2020 Highlander Platnium, and 2020 Rav4 since 2018). These things are without a doubt the single most impressive car add on that I've experienced in my nearly 60 years. My wife has recently FINALLY come around when I put the comma 3 in the Highlander and went out of town for a business trip. Previously she'd be like, "Its okay but I like to drive myself." Well, I came home the other day and she said, "I didn't know you put the comma in the Highlander." Well, needless to say I think she's officially a convert. She said she didn't realize that she liked it as much as she did and it was seemless when driving - I think she missed it and didn't really realize it :) . Needless to say I'm buying another one! (maybe). The Highlander works SO MUCH better than the Camry did with the comma. Not that the Camry didn't work well, it did, but the Highlander was a whole other level of refinement. Now the kicker, I recently bought a used 2020 Rav4 as my go to work car and it likes to ping pong in the lane a lot more than I care for it to. The Camry didn't do this at all, and the Highlander is ROCK SOLID in its lane tracking. Is there a fork that would help with this? There is a LTA setting that that I've adjusted that 'seems' to help a little (I think its sway sensitivity), but the RAV4 is the worst for in lane ping ponging which the comma ALWAYS eliminated in any vehicle that had Lane Tracing Assist that I've owned. It's not horrible, but it's the worst of any other vehicle that I had my comma's on. Any advice would be appreciated! As a final comment, I love my Comma3!!! BTW, the Lane Tracing Assist that's in the Highlander in stock form is WAY WORSE than the 2017 Civic Touring that I had. BUT, with the comma on board it is BY FAR the best vehicle that I've ever had a comma on. It might have to do with the Toyota Safety Sense version that's on the Highlander. If your considering one of these...JUST DO IT!!! You won't regret it IMO!
I have 2021 RAV4 Hybrid with a Comma 2. The MPG thing is just because Openpilot guns it when going up hill. Toyota stock cruise does the same. I just take control when going up hill and I still get 37-38 average MPG. And if you use a popular fork, you can let the comma do all the steering even when cruise control isn't enabled.
One complaint I had was having to always be adjusting the max speed when changing speed limits. Because I would have to end up pressing Cancel or braking which deactivates the steering too. But with the SunnyPilot fork, it can adjust the speed limit automatically when going into a slower zone and back up when leaving. And SunnyPilot allows separating steering from gas/brake so you can have it control steering while doing the gas/brake yourself, and then re-engage once you're comfortable.
I'm definitely interested in checking out the sunny pilot fork. I'm a little nervous switching from the official to something else but if it works better I'm open to it. thank you for watching btw and sharing your thoughts on it, I appreciate it!!
@@GaryCantrell 😅 Yeah I tried it yesterday too and it didn't really seem to help. For me, I think the issue is the car's radar isn't clearing immediately. So it thinks the car in front is still there when it's not. But maybe I'm wrong. Hopefully when they release end to end longitudinal (currently in experimental mode) this issue will be fixed. Edit: I guess I'm talking about when a car gets out of the lane in front it takes a second to update, but this might also be related to when you're stopped and the car in front starts moving.
Excellent video Gary! I thought the pacing of the video was great. I’ve never used a comma device (car doesn’t support it, but working on getting my 2009 Yaris working with it) but have been following the project since the early days (2017ish) Few bits of information from you - they have approx 15K customers, though many are on forks (sunny, frog etc) so they don’t have info from those device. But 15K is a good ballpark Glad install was easy, they’ve spent a lot of time making that process better. FYI the OBD connection isn’t required any more and you should be able to remove it. Makes install easier too! It’s wild that the automakers haven’t integrated this solution into their cars. It’s all open source and available to them, yet no progress. Not braking for a stopped car is somewhat common issue. This should improve soonish with the new machine learning approach. I believe time to accelerate from stopped should be improved as well. The forks are likely better in those areas too, so once you’re comfortable it’d be worth giving it a shot. It’s all software, you’re correct :) Correct the 3X came out August last year. They’re not currently limited by the processing power of the 3X, so I’d be surprised if a new version comes out next year ( but who knows! After all they don’t make any money from software ) Like you said, the older devices can still work with community managed forks of the software. Lots of people are still using the Comma Two. I’m really hoping they explode in popularity soon :) especially with the ease of install and value add for the price, seems like a no brainer. Great video once again, keep it up
First of all wow thank you for all of your thoughts and taking time to watch the video I feel like as more people see this video they will be able to get some value from the comments section. I’m definitely open to looking into the other forks, I just really wanted to see what the out of the box experience was like. I’m going to include this in another video but I wanted say that I’m with you, I hope they explode in popularity as well and while I think they go above and beyond to give us all the super inside baseball type details when they do updates and such I think they would benefit greatly from having someone market for them in a more straightforward way that can display all the amazing things the device can do and not bog them down with every little detail. That said I know they’re a small crew and they’ve done an incredible job with what they have and I’ll do what I can to help spread the word! Thank you for your kind words about the video!!
@@GaryCantrell Yeah honestly super impressive what they've done with 10-20 people (might be 30ish now). Their blog has a bunch of good info too, and they do blog posts for new releases, so check that out when the next release is ready (within couple of months hopefully)
Ditto everything that Andy said. I transitioned to using SunnyPilot about 6 months ago and really like the additional features (like the option to maintain the steering control if you don't have CC active).

Nice review. I first used this five years ago and recently completed two trips totaling 11,000 miles. Don't be afraid to set off the pay attention alarm. It's better to know the limits of the system. George isn't going to lock you out of the system or come take your car, don't worry :)

I love my Comma 3X in my '20 RAV4 - but let's be clear... comma does not make your car autonomous and it for sure isn't full self driving. It is really mostly exactly like the stock ADAS (You are setting the cruise), but it lane keeps and will come to a stop behind a car at a light a WHOLE heck of a lot better than the stock system... and it's replaced the steering wheel nag with a camera monitoring the driver. It was a tough call for me to keep it when I first got it but goign back and forth between my cars with and without the Comma I decided to keep it and now have about 27k miles driven with it. The big thing people need to know. Yes, it lane keeps. Yes you can command lane changes. It doesn't 'navigate' and it does make mistakes. The driver still needs to actively monitor and take over depending what is going on. the big take over moments for me are often following motorcycles it doesn't recognize that they are in my same lane and will try to drive past a motorcycle off to the side of the lane. As you called out, sometimes it 'comes in hot' and isn't braking when you expect. I can't wait for experimental mode to get better refined. it stopping for red lights is pretty cool.
Did you run the cable down to the OBD port by going behind the SRS airbag? I just got a 3x and just hooked mine up quickly without running the wires nicely. Looking for advice! Thanks for the video!

Yada sunny pilot yüklesek onda var mı bu özellikler.
I've had a Comma 2/Comma 3 with our 2021 Prius Prime since May of 2021. Almost 60K miles with OpenPilot. When I first got it my wife wasn't enthused about the money I spent. Now she won't drive a car without it. We just leased a Hyundai Ioniq 5 and I installed a 3x as soon as they had their Black Friday sale. The install (software) wasn't nearly as smooth on the Hyundai as it was on the Toyota (I had to use a special fork), but I got it to work. Bottom line: if your car is supported, IMO it's totally worth it! I've rented a couple of Tesla's and I think OpenPilot is better than AutoPilot.
I’m glad to hear you got your wife hooked on it! I’m hoping mine will warm up to it. 60k is a lot miles on it and I feel better in my purchase hearing that you’ve got a lot of longevity with it. Thank you so much for sharing and watching!!!
Mine does! Once she got used to it she decided she never wanted another vehicle that didn't have it. It was one of the deciding factors in our decision to lease an Ioniq 5 (although for some reason OpenPilot didn't recognize the car's fingerprint - I had to install a fork). My wife is a forensic nurse (Google it - it's probably NOT what you think), and often has to do exams at all hours. She's very thankful to have it driving home at like 3:00 AM.
