Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce on "The Two Popes"

  • In 2013 the unthinkable happened: a pope resigned, and another became head of the Vatican. For the first time in six centuries, the Catholic Church had two popes. The new film "The Two Popes" imagines what conversations between the 85-year-old Pope Benedict XVI (played by Sir Anthony Hopkins) and Pope Francis (played by Jonathan Pryce) would have sounded like - and since both pontiffs disagreed on most everything, not all of that conversation is polite. Correspondent Tracy Smith talked with Hopkins and Pryce about their star-making movies, faith, and friendship.

Just finished watching it and its a marvelous piece of cinema. Much of it is just the two of them having a conversation but you are absolutely captivated every second of it. Except for the minor inconvenience of none of it being true. It completely maligns Pope Benedict as being some out of touch vestige of the past with no sense of his own spirituality, only until he is "rescued" by the enlightened Bergoglio. If anyone had any sense of the reality of these two men, it becomes clear pretty quickly that this is laughably stupid.
Pope Benedict is one of the most profound thinkers in all of Christianity. His tremendous body of written work and his long academic and doctrinal career attest to this. His future sainthood is all but guaranteed, and I would speculate that he will someday be named a Doctor of the Church. I can't say the same for Pope Francis who has seemingly endless string of personal gaffes and vindictive behavior. Two days ago he publicly slapped a woman.
This movie was foolish and nothing more than leftist propaganda meant to promote the "progressive" Pope Francis and to embolden heterodox ideas within the Church.

I watched this on Netflix a few days ago thinking it wasn't going to be anything that great or have some sort of political under tone in relation to our society today but WOW was I mistaken this has to be the best and most well written movie of 2019 I ever saw. I couldn't step away, Hopkins is a master of the screen and loved this movie beyond what I thought I would. A must see

I admire Anthony Hopkins, I will always admire him in all sorts of way. He is jot only one of the greatest actor but also an incredible human being which I have learned from his public interactions, orations, social media and interviews. He loves classical music, he is a great pianist and composer and a painter too. He is such a legend. His words of wisdom in many interviews touched me to the core, how he said of all it so simply yet its all so deep. He is such a humble personality inspite of being such a great artist.

Two of our greatest actors. Apart from "1917" (which I've seen - magnificent) it'll be the only other film, so far, that seems worth watching. I remember seeing Anthony Hopkins and Judy Dench in Shakespeare's Anthony and Cleopatra at the National Theatre in London during the 1980s. Truly outstanding acting and a thrilling production. Both Anthony and Jonathan are fearless actors, relishing and excelling at the challenges and mental demands of stage acting, to the less exposed, less precarious expectations of film making.
