  • I've gotten a lot of requests for an update on Roscoe, and I've been putting it off for awhile, so here goes. Ole Roscoe is off doing raccoon things. He'd been disappearing and going off in the woods for a week or two at a time for awhile, and the amount of time he stayed gone increased between every visit.
But, don't worry; this is actually a good thing! Roscoe came to live out in the middle of nowhere with me so he could do all the raccoon things his little heart desired, and the end goal was always that he would be able to survive on his own.
We'll all definitely miss him and would love for him to come back to visit, but we're happy he's out there living his best life. Here are a few of my favorite Roscoe clips!

Definitely bittersweet when they leave. I raised three orphaned raccoons a few years ago - from bottle feeding to teaching them to find food in streams. They finally left around the late Fall. I never named them because I didn't want to get too attached, but you're basically their parent. Great times! My three little buggers are likely dead by now but they wouldn't have lived if not for folks like us.
Here's to Roscoe! May he find all the bugs and crawdads and gf's his raccoon heart desires. lol

Caring for Roscoe was a wonderful act of kindness. You saved his life and gave him the chance to grow up. Now he has made friends, likely found a mate and is living the high life. You are a kind, loving person and can be very proud of yourself. : )

Roscoe came for awhile and you provided his needs for a time. I was impressed that you had him live outside in the world and didn't make him a a house pet. When the time came for him to move on he did left because he also learned survival skills. Do not be surprised had he someday may return, Hope so. Stay safe and healthy

I've raised 5 raccoon kits over the last 15 years. One at a time. Bottle feeding is rough, but very rewarding bc they think you are mommy. Trained them all to take care of themselves as best that I could. Most leave home around 9 months old, fully grown. Some have come back to visit, so there is hope that Roscoe will stop by occasionally. Lot of work, but also lots of fun. Heart breaking when they leave, but you know it's the way God intended. I have one now named Rufus. He will be a year old in April. He's ready to move on but thankfully hasn't left yet. Enjoy every minute.

I know exactly how you feel about Roscoe. I rescued an abandoned baby porcupine and raised him to adulthood. Mr. Prickles was awesome to have around. He was potty trained and so much fun to play with. But the time did come when he just stopped coming back for visits and treats. But with pictures and memories he will always be a member of our family.

I had one about same age as Roscoe do that too, where I worked at a Marina in Daytona, Florida.....hed come visit frequently and then it started to taper off. I also noticed around this time OTHER raccoons around him. Eventually, after about 2 weeks of disappearances, I didn't see him again. I think they get older and just move on. Alas! Nice while it lasted! Thanks alot Erin for all the great posts of Roscoe!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for the update, Erin. He is a healthy young male raccoon who went on to claim his own territory and raise little Roscoe's, as it should be. It's a good thing and we all have good memories of him. What more can you ask for? The females' are a little different. I had a friend who was benefactor to a "wild" but habituated racoon for 14 years when when, despite medical care, she died due to injury's.

I'll bet you miss him like crazy. My wife and I fell in love with racs back in the 90's. We started by feeding one raccoon and suddenly she showed up with two babies. We now had three and three turned into seven within a year. After five years we had 33 raccoons knocking on our front door at 7 p.m. sharp every night. We fed them Attaboy by the 60 lb. bag. We did have a couple that would come into the house. They are really adorable little creatures but we came to the realization that we had to stop feeding them. The only way we could do it was to go on a trip to Lake Tahoe for about ten days. We got back and honestly we really missed them but we simply couldn't go through that again. People who have never had experiences with these little guys misjudge them All they want to do is eat, play and steal stuff. I know deep down you do miss him but you are correct. They are animals in the wild. But, and I'm certain you will agree....having Roscoe around was something you will always cherish.

I know someone who raised and rehabilitated coons for years. Depending on what part of the country your from, and how much food is available in the wild. He will be back to visit if he has trouble finding food. Even after a few years they can come back. You would 've suprised how long they live. And how well their memory is. Especially females.
