- Legendary Beach Boy Brian Wilson discusses writing The Warmth of the Sun with Mike Love hours after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and performs it in studio (1994).
Haunting, lovely, sad, brilliant, touching, moving, reflective, angelic, lush, heavenly - and it still, after 100s of listens, makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
Incredibly wonderful
Some people should live forever!
Absolutely.
He will. Just like Bach has 💜
@@Jan_Mac❤
His music will indeed last forever! It already surpasses space and time.
All those who know Christ as Saviour WILL live forever! Jesus saves!
I usually don't like people covering Beach Boy songs. But, when Vince Gill sang this song in a dedication I was completely amazed.
Vince Gill live 2001 from BW tribute concert is the ultimate version. One of the most beautiful pieces ever recorded.
Brian Wilson, Mozart of our time!!!
He truly is. Genius can be an over-used descriptor for some artists, but in this case it's true. He's simply 'not wired' like the rest of us.
Love this…you can always see all the emotion on his face❤
I remember being amazed by the Beach Boys music, lyrics, harmonies, instrumentation and even then I didn't have the appreciation for their music that they deserved.. I'm so pleased that the years have taken care of that.
GENIUS...BRIAN.. GENIUS.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
I was the typical kid who knew a handful of Beach Boys songs without even knowing their names. It wasn't until I read interviews with other major artists like Elton John who praised his genius that I began to gravitate towards their catalog. It took me a good year to really understand and appreciate Pet Sounds -- but once I did!
At 75 now I do indeed remember the Beach Boys. I listened to them, did not much appreciate them and the genious of Brian Wilson back in that day, although I surely do now.
Yes indeed Vince Gills' voice to this song is a game changer for sure.
All the Best
I love this man..... what a special person that has brought us so much joy.... I hope the joy we all feel because of his music brings him happiness
Brian has said the joy is in the giving. Six generations of fans embracing his music has got to bring some degree of joy and peace.
"The Warmth of the Sun" is a song that welcomes me back every time I hear it. I appreciate Brian sharing the context of writing this song - in the immediate wake of JFK's assassination. It gives an added connection to this beautiful song to hear Brian's solo version here as he recounts how "something took us over", a description of what the initiator of something compelling experiences when that moment occurs. This studio version of "Warmth" is excellent as well, but it's great to see and hear this and see Brian Wilson at work in the studio on one of many musically innovative Beach Boys songs.
What a beautiful spirit Brian is. I've always loved this song for its haunting and moving melody. It's almost as if Brian was taking refuge from the cold night of that horrible day in November.
Many of Brian's melancholy songs have a glimmer of hope at the end. That attitude keeps him going.
Funny, the Rolling Stone reviewer of Pet Sounds put it the other way: To paraphrase, it’s a masterpiece of sad songs. Even the happy songs are sad.
@@johntechwriter I believe that Brian was in a constant state of grief and was articulating that grief through his music.
@@gpiano88 Fair enough.
@@gpiano88I would call it a state of melancholy, not mourning
Never Knew this was inspired by the loss of JFK. Stunning. Beautiful.
I thought Brian and Mike did a great job making this song about loss in a way thay appeals without making it directly about JFK.
I grew up in the 1960s and Brian and the Beach Boys brought incredible joy to my life with their music. Sure, I liked the Beatles, but I didn't understand what Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds meant. But I understood cars and girls, so the Beach Boys resonated with me. I was a car guy and drag racer from 1963 to 2020 so I knew what ram induction and pressure plates were and knew all of the other car terms in Shut Down and their other car songs. Growing up in St. Louis, with the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers near by, the only surfing could do was on a home made skateboard made from a 2x4 and roller skate wheels. I was fortunate to meet my childhood hero Brian Wilson on stage before a concert at a small venue in 2019 in New Jersey. Got to meet Al Jardine, too.
I've had the pleasure of meeting and quickly saying hello to all the Beach Boys, except Dennis. He passed away when I was just 14. I can honestly say that they were very approachable and cordial. Please see my video of when Brian called me in 1995. Talk about an amazing experience!
The genius of Brian Wilson...affects everyone, in the best way. His lyrics interpret love, heartbreak and happiness. His music draws out feelings from the heart.
What a beautiful song and awesome band
I feel the intensity in the voice of Brian Wilson and understanding of JFK being shot, for this song to come an inspiration with depth, feeling God’s presence. I like this because you can see how he feels. So grateful for this clip, thank you.
👍🇺🇸🙏🏽
You are quite welcome!
What else would you expect from a musical genius?
This performance is every bit as touching in its own way as the Beach Boys' original recording.
The music was greater than the group. That's why the touring band was great even w/out Brian in it.
My favorite Beach Boys song!
I grew up in the 1960s. The Beach Boys featured on the radio. My favorites are Don't worry Baby 1964, I can hear Music 1969, Do it Again 1968, God only Knows 1966, Good Timin 1979.
So many great tunes over the decades. Through it all music remained his best friend and he never let it down!
This is a masterpiece
Paul McCartney used it as the intro to "Here There and Everywhere". Paul's admiration for the Beach Boys began long before "God Only Knows". Just a gorgeous progression.
GOK being Macca's favorite song. He made Pet Sounds required regular listening for his kids as they grew up!
Simply beautiful.
And he made it look SO easy!
Bryan love your spirit
As always , it is the backup sounds and the music arrangements that bring a fullness to the final product.
Brian knew/knows how to employ complex layers in his head. That's his genius at play.
Incredible tune.
i FOLLWED THE bEACH BOYS SINCE THE 1960'S AND HE IS DEFINITELY A GENIUS LIKE GERSWIN!
I'm happy to see that since he returned to the touring scene in 2000 he's finally getting his due from fans and critics.
I saw the real live film over brian in the begin cried my eyes but then cried my eyes out that his life is so beautiful with his wife and children brian family have a lovely life ❤❤
He simply doesn't give up!
BEAUTIFUL!
Brian sounded awesome here!
I'm amazed at how much of his voice he gained back after the mid-to-late 70s! Six packs of cigarettes a day did him NO favors.
@@MrLandlocked interestingly i dont think Brian gained any vocal abilities back during Landys treatments in the 70s and 80s (despite Landy claiming otherwise). he only somewhat improved when he was let free. 70s had zero progress and in the 80s his songs were 98% shouting and off key alot of the time (still love his music though obviously.
You don't think Brian had improved from his 'Love You' vocal days? He was once again stacking his harmonies and expanding his vocal range. The 6 pack-per-day cigs really did a number on him. Tragic.
Magical 🎶🎶🎶
Brian!!!😃😄🙏❤🙏
So moving! Grateful to you for sharing this incredibly moving clip. Also, to all that commented, you enrich this emotional experience. Thank you all! I'm curious to know if the full recording is somehow available somewhere.
😅
I believe it is on the official soundtrack from 1995.
I would look on Amazon or eBay for a used copy of the soundtrack. Maybe it is being streamed? Dunno- I am old school and prefer physical product.

Thank you!@@MrLandlocked
American songbook getting bigger! I sure appreciate your explanation.
Glorious!
What a hauntingly sad song Brian turns something ordinary into gold dust
But even the saddest of BW songs, like this, tend to offer a glimmer of hope.
A genius. The Beethoven of my lifetime
Beethoven, Mozart, Debussy, Wagner. The list goes on and on. Imagine what he could of become if he kept focus with the same intensity after 1967!
ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO PLAY THIS AND OTHER SONGS BY BRIAN ON THE GUITAR!
I play guitar in a Beach Boys tribute band. This is really one of the easier songs to play. Songs like All Summer Long and When I Grow Up To Be A Man are much more challenging. Find a good teacher or experienced guitarist to show you how to play it, you will enjoy it. Good luck and keep playing!
His music often tends to be difficult on the piano as he has "big paws" and can cover an octave.
this song largely flew under the radar. i dont think it got released as a single. & dont think it recieved much attn as an album filler.. doesnt that blow your.mind?.. that song floored me when i first heard it, especially given the age of it's auteur's.. the unexpected maturity alone should have propelled it. especially since the redcoats hadnt arrived yet...
In this video Brian reminds me of that charachter Jim Carrey plays. the angle of his face etc.
Carrey being the genius actor -- makes sense!
You can hear a small piece of Maybe Im amazed and a few others in the beginning.
2:16 nice falsetto!

Beautiful song that was a “B” side .
B-sides weren't supposed to be this good!
@@MrLandlocked I know! There were so many of those in the 60’s & early 70’s. Some were accidental by the deejays playing the wrong side. Gloria , God OnlyKnows, Hello Its Me , Maggie May , Black Water , offthe top of my head to name a few. The list would be endless!
song at 2:57
Where is this from? A documentary?
The 1995 Don Was-directed documentary I Just Wasn't Made for These Times. You can find free copies of it by searching YT.
Are these the Earls singing background
I only know them as Sweet Pea and Co...who were also in director Don Was' 99s band Was Not Was.
Brians facial tics look worse here than during the landy years.
It's widely believe that in the final year of his Landy experience his meds were severely mismanaged and these may be the result.
Probably better done by somebody Else ,but sounds like good song ,
Lol what are you on
@@robertdeville8635 he propably means because Brian technically isnt a good singer since the beginning of the 70s. which is true, but it of course doesent mean you cant enjoy his music!
Go seek the original and attempt to hit some of those notes!
So interesting. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
He looks like a Mafia boss😂
Love the Beach Boys ...
ive always said that 90s Brian looked like a backround character in a mafia movie. and in the 80s he had his "hot dad" phase with the leather pants and all 😁
Should he have then done an Italian opera with harmony? 😂
Brian at his best Times💕💞
Those early-to-mid 60s songs are pure, unparalleled magic!
