Made In The Abyss definitely ended its first season on a high note. It was sad and beautiful. Loved the scene with Reg comforting Nanachi, and the bond that Reg and Riko share is so sweet. Can't wait to see what the film is going to be like.
I agree - at the time apparently some critics felt too much of the story was unresolved in terms of introducing Bondrewd as this big bad then ending the show. It's mentioned in the SuperWolfPatch viral review. But looking back, yeah - it's the most beautiful anime season ending IMO. Nothing has made me ugly weep like that while also having so much hope

I liked the way they handled the topic of euthanasia with nuance, cos lets face it, it's a sensitive topic. And it was clever writing how they used Riko's description of her dream to give Reg and nanachi...amd us watching... the comfort that they made the right decision for mitty.

Down in the Abyss there is no so such thing as "Laws" as its not an owned country with its own society governing it. Think of it like visiting a whole new planet, it doesn't matter what illegal things that you do over there since the law can't reach you just like in the Abyss. It comes down to peoples own morals or lack thereof. Sometimes the curse and monsters aren't the most dangerous things in the Abyss but other Cave Raiders. Also, since Bondrewd is a White Whistle he is respected and seen as a hero to the people of Orth. Bondrewd in particular is highly praised for all the technology and research that he has created through his morally questionable experiments to further understand the Abyss which has greatly benefited all cave raiders who go down into the Abyss while also benefiting the people of Orth through the many relics that he has found. He is basically a "Necessary Evil" if that makes sense. Just an FYI regarding everything that I said about Bondrewd is not spoilers since it wasn't included in the anime/movie. I thought you should know now before you learn more about him next time.
I feel ya Miss Morgan, that shit with Nanachi and the other children was some of the most disturbing, sorrowful, and rage inducing shit I've watched recently. That evil scientist is high-level of trash.
Ironically, Bondrewd is both feared and beloved, Mercenaries are hired to kill him, but sometimes they decide to join him and die in the name of science.
But he also the one who save the more life of all white whistle reunite :D He is not evil he cant be evil and getting the blessing of abyss that impossible
The juxtaposition of Nanachi worrying about her own passing, leaving Mitty in the abyss alone forever, vs Reg not wanting to lose Riko and be himself left alone in the abyss forever. Nanachi had the knowledge but was given the spirit and drive to adventure by Mitty, while Reg is made to traverse the abyss but needs Riko to understand it and make his way.

team riko is at the bottom of the fourth level at the end of this season. the place where bondrewd is doing the child experiments is at the bottom of the 5th level. thats as far as normal humans can go and return alive and still human. the elevator dips down just into the 6th layer. there is also a 7th layer according to the map i think but nobody can return from the 6th layer so we dont know much about levels 6 & 7
I believe that Mitty recieves the full *curse* of the abyss while Nanachi on the other hand recieves only the _blessing_ part. Thanks for reacting to this anime 💖
We did it! :') happy y'all appreciated the beauty & inspiration in the ending after all the horror *Clarifications*: not all hollows/those hit by 6th layer curse are immortal, just Mitty since she was a part of giving the blessing of the abyss to Nanachi. Movie explains more. Why would Bondrewd want to transform folks? The short answer is being better able to handle the abyss, and avoiding becoming those praying skeletons that are spaced out by 2,000 year cycles. There are 2 white whistles we haven't met yet - Srajo - the Obscure (plague doctor mask) & Wakuna - the Chosen (top hat). Also, Marulk is a boy, and Nanachi is unknown - tho the author accidentally had other characters refer using her/she pronouns, but IMO is a boy - serves as a great parallel to reg/riko. For fans, I can't recommend checking out the manga enough! Chapter 67 gave us a lot of info about souls and the abyss. The next white whistle has better character design than bondrewd tbh This has been a great journey seeing the cutest weebs get traumatized, cope, and then be inspired. Super happy Sam was instantly on the "bondrewd needs to die" train lol

There's no way to "kill" Mitty because she's undying, so there would be no corpse to even put in the box. If Mitty exists, she is alive, and so the only way to allow her to die is to erase any existence of her. Also even if they could somehow get Mitty into the box, alive or dead, there's no reason to believe it would un-curse her rather than just keeping her alive in her cursed form. If anything, if you consider what happened when Ozen put the meat in the box, it might just corrupt her further. Of course this also means who knows what would happen, but I think Nanachi had long since ruled out any hope of restoring Mitty and was solely looking to free her, if she could even discover a method for that.

All the scenes where we see how Nanachi treats Mitty just hits me in the feels. And that final look Nanachi gave their little abode. They're both free now and can move on now. And yet it hurts. Ahhh... the right amount of crying during this episode. So sad and tragic but so much pain is released. The place they have to go is the only way to get down to the 6th layer. Riko's story about the dream and losing herself and then encountering Mitty was so sad. Lots of sadness but lots of joyful times with Riko's enthusiasm and drive. Nanachi has been at trying to kill Mitty for a pretty long time. Happy to see the balloon make it up to Orth. Next up... Dawn of the Deep Soul! Looking forward to it. I think this series only gets better as it goes on with every entry. But this is still my favourite episode in the entire show, and one of my favourite episodes ever.

If you pay attention, that house is actually the corpse of one of those huge creatures from the 3rd layer (The Great Fault) that Riko fell into, filled with sweet digestive juices and that she cut her way out of. The windows are its eyes and the open doorway is its mouth.
I have never seen anyone say this before. And I don't think I am inclined to believe it without a source confirming it. It also doesn't make a lot of since considering each of the biomes in the Abyss are pretty unique and dependent on their ecosystems. The neritantan, the little flat rodent guys, that those amakagame creatures specifically evolved to attract and consume don't live in the 4th layer. So There isn't really a reason one would even be there since their specifically evolved food source isn't there. Sure, you could argue that the biomes were different a thousand years ago or something, and sure, maybe that could be true; but there just isn't any evidence of it that I'm aware of to say that it absolutely IS one of those creatures. Unless you have a source beyond speculation? Otherwise its an interesting theory. I almost scrolled past your comment because I figured it was another "It looks like Mitty" comments. Which was not intentional, said in a Q and A, but the same Q and A said Nanachi's house was formally a 'mushroom farm'. No mention of it being an amakagame. It's even worse than that: he Is not even evil: an evil Person understands that His actions are morally wrong but Doesn't care about It or even enjoys the fact that Is doing something bad. This Is not bondrewd's case: He has completely Lost the ability to understand the consequence and the gravity of His actions, basically he Is a child Who finds Everything beautiful and interesting. A child Who Really believes that him, nanachi and the other Kids are a Happy family that Is living an incredible Adventure. It's completely impossible to make him understand how terribile he Is because he basically Is not a human anymore. Basically he himself Is a victim of the abyss.

While I agree he has lost that general ability to feel the morality, guilt and other related emotions; I think he KNOWS what hes doing is morally wrong to most. Just to him it's worth it even if it comes at an awful cost, feeling or not. If what he does works then it can protect and save far more people then harmed achieved it. Making it worthwhile. If he didn't think what he was doing would help the 'greater good' I don't think he would bother, even for scientific curiosity. Nothing we see him do is for personal curiosity. All of his actions seem to be at their core for the greater benefit of all cave raiders. With the end goal of "More people who can safely enter and ascend the abyss, the better odds we collectively have to understand its secrets and reach its bottom." He might explore an idea that's morally awful to see if it has merit for those goals, but if it doesn't yield results, he won't waist his time with that experiment anymore, he would move on. I think that's why some stuff he shows up in later he doesn't' maintain presence there anymore and stuck with what he did instead. He can appreciate, care, he can love; but he is willing to crush those things if he can make it have greater purpose.
Made in abyss is kinda mid after like episode 3 and until this episode. It's "peak" from here on for better or for worse. This also broke me out of my sociopath phase in high school where I didn't cry (except sometimes randomly before going to sleep, but certainly not at anything sad) for like 5 years.

This Is not bondrewd's case: He has completely Lost the ability to understand the consequence and the gravity of His actions, basically he Is a child Who finds Everything beautiful and interesting. A child Who Really believes that him, nanachi and the other Kids are a Happy family that Is living an incredible Adventure. It's completely impossible to make him understand how terribile he Is because he basically Is not a human anymore. Basically he himself Is a victim of the abyss.

@@bondrewd5935 Actually. I think he understands its wrong, but sees the possible benefits on the other side of the bad that would outweigh any bad done.
While I agree he has lost that general ability to feel the morality, guilt and other related emotions; I think he KNOWS what hes doing is morally wrong to most. Just to him it's worth it even if it comes at an awful cost, feeling or not. If what he does works then it can protect and save far more people then harmed achieved it. Making it worthwhile. If he didn't think what he was doing would help the 'greater good' I don't think he would bother, even for scientific curiosity.
Nothing we see him do is for personal curiosity. All of his actions seem to be at their core for the greater benefit of all cave raiders. With the end goal of "More people who can safely enter and ascend the abyss, the better odds we collectively have to understand its secrets and reach its bottom." He might explore an idea that's morally awful to see if it has merit for those goals, but if it doesn't yield results, he won't waist his time with that experiment anymore, he would move on. I think that's why some stuff he shows up in later he doesn't' maintain presence there anymore and stuck with what he did instead.
He can appreciate, care, he can love; but he is willing to crush those things if he can make it have greater purpose.

Made in abyss is kinda mid after like episode 3 and until this episode. It's "peak" from here on for better or for worse. This also broke me out of my sociopath phase in high school where I didn't cry (except sometimes randomly before going to sleep, but certainly not at anything sad) for like 5 years.
its one of these animes that really hits you ,cutsey at the beginning but dark finnish that has you in tears...but there is s2 and in between s1-2 a short movie
