lol the creator explained "papa pole" is just how prushka understands the difference between males and females. "the pole that can make someone a papa". in order to receive the blessing of the abyss, you have to actually love each other. so if he abused her like that, it wouldnt have worked. Bonedrewed really did care for prushka and the rest of the kids (nanachi included). Remember the abyss twists your mind. he was probably already insane when he became his own white whistle. 15 years later and extensively usingzoaholic further twisted a completely twisted mind. to him, he took them on an adventure in the abyss as he promised and everyone should be stoked about it. hes an interesting character because hes a true villian WITHOUT malice which is hard to even imagine. but thats what they abyss does to you.
He is not a villain without evil, he is a creature who has abandoned morality and lives primarily by logic and the pursuit of scientific research. His feelings are still there, but he always prioritizes science. I don't think the classic "mad scientist" trope applies here. But he's definitely an anomaly, like all white whistle.
@@nullakjg767 So you completely ignore the first part of the comment, but emphasize the second part, where there is a small part with my reasoning. And on the basis of that you tell others NOT to bother you, in a place where people are sharing opinions? You're very smart, by the looks of it.
Something messed up I realized on rewatch is that it seems like Bondrewd was fully willing to make a whistle for Riko and expected to do so. Before Riko arrived, Bondrewd advised Prushka to befriend and get close to Riko and when Riko did get there, he was confused that she hadn’t thought about needing her own whistle and said “I was under the assumption that you were here to obtain the raw materials for your worth.” He was not only using Prushka for himself but was also PREPARING HER AS A RESOURCE FOR RIKO! He likely wanted and expected a bargain like the one nanatchi offered: he would make a whistle for Riko and in exchange he would get to keep nanatchi to help with his research. He just wasn’t expecting them to actually care about reg as a person, because to Bondrewd he’s just a relic. Bondrewd is so unnerving because he’s probably one of the most twisted evil villains I’ve ever seen in fiction but he totally lacks malice and just does what he sees as best to further his own research with empathy and ethics being totally ignored.
Wouldn't really call him evil but that is necessary research in the cruel culture they live in. They all live to visit the depths of the abyss but who will find the best ways to go down and up without sacrifices? Better having results than none and be a waste of life in vain. And applicable in real life too when new diseases happen and there needs to be a test on the cure.
Yeah, the guy is 100 shades of grey but evil? Nahh. Probably the very reason Orth doesn't actively go after him. He doesn't do things out of malice. Morally reprehensible but not malevolent.
Lack of malice doesn't make one any less evil. "Hell is paved with good intentions", as they say. So it's not about what one intends that makes it evil - it's what his actions do to others.
Evil is not a constant. Evil is a matter of perspective. After being transferred so many times his perspective of good and evil are vastly different. From his perspective, not doing these things and progressing his research for all to know what lies beyond would be evil.
I thought it was more "Oh Nanachi I thought you were gonna use Riko to make your own white whistle" hence him going "oopsie" when Nanachi asked him to not harm them.
Fun fact : Bondrewd theme is named "The Rumble of Scientific Triumph". The composer was reading the fan translation of the manga online, and the japanese onomatopea used when Bondrewd transformed and climbed up was not easy to translate. So, as a joke to their inability to translate it, they used "The Rumble of Scientific Triumph". The composer name the track like this as a nod to this :D
For every dark anime out there, Made in Abyss just goes "hold my whistle." What's really unnerving but also interesting too is how you can't even feel vindicated after defeating Bondrewd. He won't feel frustration. He never had any evil plans you can foil. He's just constantly looking towards progress. To the point where he also experiments on himself without a second thought. It's a little hard to describe him. When you outsmart him, he just genuinely expresses his astonishment. No "curse you for foiling my plans!" villain moment for him. He's like the least "evil" villain in anime even though he's done the most horrible things. It's what makes him fascinating IMO, but it also makes him one of the most terrifying characters in all of fiction. He's the stuff of nightmares. And it's crazy how he'll probably be genuinely offended if you tell him that. His brain just works differently. I kinda feel bad about it but it's just too well-crafted as an anime. Darkest but most fascinating anime. The cool concepts, the world-building, and beautiful designs. But also there's the existential horror, the cosmic horror, and the body horror.
Guys, Nanachi said pretty clearly that they can't kill him because he has many bodies. And before that she said pretty clearly that he can transfer himself without the mask. She said that the mask is just a symbol and a way for Prushka to recognize that he is "Papa". So, her saying "We should've destroyed his mask" does not mean that she decided to not kill him before that, she just meant that it would be at least something bad for him(he probably wouldn't even care tho). Thats all.
They couldn't kill him even if they wanted to. Even Reg, in his altered state of consciousness, couldn't do it. Their entire stay here was planned in such a way as to leave them a small loophole to get the white whistle. When Riko asks him to let Prushka go, he says she's asleep now, but he'll let her go later. And Bondrewd really let her go, in the form of a white whistle. He thinks in other categories and many steps forward. If anyone can kill him. It's something from the bottom of the abyss.
@@MiojoNaChapa Just because he threw it away when he used it doesn't mean he "let her go". He's insane, in the sense that his mind has long since transcended human rules and morality. As I said above, he thinks in different categories. He is devoid of anger or aggression, all he has left is a love of learning something new, and paradoxically, a love for his creations. He does love his subjects, but in the sense that a child loves a living toy, with its own will and feelings. And what makes you think he couldn't have planned it, if he somehow sees (and maybe not only sees) through Nanachi's eyes? Nanachi was only able to escape with Mitty because he let them go. They didn't destroy zoaholic, read about it on wiki/manga.
*Minor Spoilers for this Movie Only* Pruschka was the daughter of one of the umbral hands and was originally injured when the carrier crashed. Remember the big armored gondola they used to bring the kids down, essentially one of those crashed. They weren't experimenting on her initially but she was so injured she lost her sense of self and Bondrewd decided to use her to try to give himself what Mitty gave to Nanachi. Bondrewd tried using his clones in the cartridges to avoid using the kids but since they were all artificial clones, they didn't count as humans and it didn't work. They destroyed the Zooholic so he can't make more of himself but since all the umbral hands are him, there are too many spread on too many layers for them to permanently kill him. Reg felt it when the whistle sounded because a white whistle brings forth the true power of an artifact. The whistle is needed to turn on the descent machine, but it can control pretty much any artifact (remember that Ozen used the whistle to open the curse-repelling vessel in Season 1.) They are nearly caught up to the manga now so we will have to wait to get Season 3. The manga has beautiful artwork that is incredibly detailed so it takes quite a bit of time to produce.
I dont think they actually destroyed zoaholic. Nanachi wanted to but since pruska truly wished that they would stop fighting each other, riko decided as team leader to just leave things as they were. still like you said, even if they did, there were so many umbra hands just floating around the abyss/facility, it wouldve been impossible to actually destroy them all and they have a mission to accomplish. They arent champions of justice like a shonen manga, they are just cave raiders.
I would think they would still destroy it as it potentially makes him immortal and given the fact that it overwrites the consciousness of the umbral hands (it's the soul "slave" machine) he could still hurt people easily with it. It wouldn't require much time at all, you wouldn't even need to tell Pruschka. They still have the blaze reap and a single hit from it would be more than enough to destroy the zoaholic given the everlasting gunpowder explosions - and even severe damage would make it unusable since relics are beyond human understanding or repair. I personally would have taken Sparagmos and Far Caress off his Blessing body before I left as they would be very useful as a defense weapon for Rico without wasting an incinerator shot.
@@-Bill. I dont think she can hide that from prushka and If riko was the kind of person who wouldnt respect prushkas wishes, then they wouldnt have been able to create the bond that led to prushka becoming a "your worth stone". Its likely bonedreweds equipment was destroyed during the fight, just because it deploys from his elbows doesnt mean there werent mechanisms that werent blown away and stealing from him/destroying zoaholic would mean he has reason to come after them since there are more umbra hands. Remember he can see everything nanachi can and could sneak them. They barley won that battle in the first place and they are on a mission which bonedrewed now supports. the truth is, they dont really care about other people and while nanachi feels guilty and wanted to disable bonedrewed further, she is deferring to riko who only really cares about diving deeper into the abyss and finding her mother. A fair amount of people disagree with their actions but again, morality is twisted and the abyss is a lawless land with enough natural dangers without stacking white whistles as enemies. Its what they chose to do.
@@nullakjg767 Maybe, but I don't think Pruschka sees everything, if I recall she can only use Rico's senses, plus we never heard Pruschka ask them to not destroy the zoaholic - she just wants to go on the adventure - I don't think she would want the machine which allows her father to delete people's minds to continue existing since that's too cruel. Using the zoaholic also makes him more and more insane, eventually he will be even worse. *Heavy Spoilers for Later in the Series below* I don't think Bondrewd would stand a chance against Faputa so that's not much of a threat really. Plus I hate for Bondrewd to keep sporagmos since I'm betting he stole it from the "girl-type" aubade.
@@-Bill. Manga spoilers for Prushka seeing everything (Chapter 65 IIRC) she can even talk with Faputa completely separately. Also Lyza's white whistle speaks, says their name is Doni and --- spoilers ---- that they should head for the ring of light on 7th layer, that someone related to Reg's creation is waiting for them there, 'be prepared' - but that they won't give any more information which is super fucking creepy
This felt like a horror movie so many times. Like I was being urged to look at something I wasn't supposed to look at. As Nanachi always says..."maaaaaa"
A lot of people I see basically try to portrayed him to be an evil piece of shit that likes to experiment on kids for the fun of it which is far from true. To clarify what Bondrewd did was morally wrong, I literally cried at the end of the movie with what happened to Prushka. However I was still able to not let my emotions take over and not jump to conclusions about Bondrewd and who he is as a character. He loved all the kids that he took down with him to the 5th layer of the abyss. If he was truly evil why would he even care to remember every single name & dream of each child he experimented on? If he was truly your generic "Evil Mad Scientist" he wouldn't have cared about any of that. The mistake that a lot of people make with Bondrewd is that they try to compare/associate him with the qualities of that of a human being. Bondrewd long ago lost his humanity when he sacrificed his own body into a White Whistle turning him into a cold hearted machine all in for the sake of progress. However he still understands human emotions and the importance of them especially that of "Love" and he reciprocates them to all the orphan children. He's able to turn on & off his emotions like that of a switch which allows for him to conduct such horrific experiments. You may say thats a contradiction BUT THATS THE WHOLE POINT OF HIS CHARACTER! He's literally a living/walking contradiction & paradox where 2 things shouldn't exist at the same time. He's a genuinely compassionate/kind man and a loving father while at the same time a cold hearted machine capable of despicable acts all in the pursuit of progress and knowledge nor for selfish gain and all for the sake of a brighter future for humanity. His mask is also symbolic of his character as its split into 2 half's by the purple light down the middle: -One half being the loving father -And the other half being the cold hearted machine He's literally meant to be a character we will truly never understand/comprehend as he's someone who's "TRANSCENDED" his own humanity into something else completely different due to the Abyss. They literally named OST just for him that has "TRANSCENDANCE" in it that plays when he's on screen. He literally symbolizes the main themes of "Lovecraftian Horror" aka "Cosmic Horror" which are: "Fear Of The Unknown" "Detachment & Isolation" "The Fragility Of Humanity/Sanity" Thats just to name a few. The Abyss also symbolizes these themes which parallels Bondrewds character. A lot of people somehow forget that the experiment of him gaining "The Blessing" aka turning into a hollow as we saw in the movie can ONLY WORK based off genuine real LOVE and it has to work BOTH WAYS, it couldn't only be the children that loved him and he didn't feel the same way back or else the experiment would have never worked. With Prushka he actually loved her more than any of the other children because when Bondrewd found her she was in critical condition due to experiencing the curse of the 5th layer. He took a big interest in her and actually admired her. That is because no matter what pain & suffering she went through she still pushed forward and survived through to until the end. He nursed Prushka to full health MULTIPLE TIMES when it could of been just easier to throw her away like trash and just start over with all the other children to create a new bond of love. Bondrewd is technically doing good things with his experiments, but he knows that they way he's going about it is horrific, but he's able to overlook that because he knows he will get results as long as he gets from point A to B and thats all the matters in the end. Which further shows how he's a contradiction to himself thats able to turn on & off his emotions. He doesn't view himself as a "Good Person" nor does he ever claim to be one either. Everything that he has done has not been for himself, but for society as a whole. In the past he had already benefited society as a whole through his experiments but he had done so at the expense of all lives he deemed necessary to sacrifice, because for Bondrewd The Novel even his own daughter Prushka who he loved so much was no exception to the rule "All is worth sacrificing for the sake of progress even that which he loves." Bondrewd objectively believes that what he's doing will provide benefits to the scientific field in studying the Abyss in the long run while morally it's obviously wrong what he's doing. (He kept mentioning of some catastrophic event that would happen every 2000 years within the Abyss that would be a huge threat to humanity.) Which is what played a huge part in shaping him as character and the reason behind all his actions.
the other important thing to remember is that he also had her and had been taking care of her before he even discovered the Blessing, he literally just genuinely believed that her continued survival against all the bullshit that happened was a sign that she was meant for something important and he would merely continue to care for her until that purpose was fulfilled. One of the scenes they cut from the movie was where Pruska essentially volunteers to replace Nanachi and Mitty as his research assistant after they escaped and he looks positively shocked that he hadn't even considered that option.
i dont quiet remember anymore but wasnt it also that his cold hearted side was due to the use of the zoaholic. i vaguely remember using it effected his empathy or something. which is why he could love all the children he experimented on while still being totally ok with using/hurting them in the ways he did.
Lol he is an evil piece of shit. Love isn't black and white. Plenty of abusive people out there who's abusive actions are a form of love. Doesn't make them better people for it. He's a true utilitarian. Any sane rational person would look at him as an evil POS
My favourite character in all of fiction. I’m never will understand him, nor I want or should. Bondrewd is a being, that is evidently no longer human, but he’s still have only interest of humanity as his main priority. Bondrewd is a strong character, whom I terrified to admire, yet unable to truly hate
Season 2 is the most recent anime release for Made in Abyss and pretty much exhausted all available source material. Judging by the pace of new chapter releases for the manga, it will take around 2 more years to get enough material for another movie or 5 more years for another season.
The reason she calls it a “papa pole”: Bonrewd taught Prushka to do surgery and how to dissect animals, she saw a pepe on one of the things she was dissecting and when she asked Bondrewd what it was he replied with “It’s the pole that makes you a papa” so it doesn’t have the implications that it seems to (I mean Bondrewd isn’t the type anyways he’s far to interested in scientific advancement). Hope that clears it up :)
Some points you either missed or didn't have the background information to notice One *the mask is not important*, you guys kept talking about taking it and destroying it, but that literally wouldn't have done anything, the mask is literally just to distinguish him as the main Bondrewd In the Manga it's also specified that each of his Umbra Hands volunteered to join him with the Zaoholic, and some of them were bounty hunters that had been sent to kill him There's an additional scene from Prushka's flashback that showed she *absolutely* knew what the cartridges were and even volunteered for the procedure because she wanted to help her papa, she knew what she was doing and Bondrewd was fulfilling her wish. Somewhat of a spoiler, the White Whistles are conscious and aware of what's happening around them after their transformation and can even communicate with their owners, so Prushka *is* joining them on their adventure, just like the visions seen during the fight where Bondrewd is seeing Prushka off with them. No attention is drawn to it at this point so I'm not surprised you missed it, but as they were discussing the White Whistles being made from humans, Bondrewd specifically mentions that they are ready to enter the next 2000 years. There is something happening in the Abyss that occurs on a 2000 year cycle that Bondrewd has been preparing for, I haven't caught up in the manga for a while so I don't know if what this 'something' is has been confirmed yet, but I'm sure if you think about it for a few minutes you'll figure out what the main fan theory is. Other points in this vein: Although he and the other White Whistles knew that the Life Reverberating stone aka "Your Worth" is made from a person, Bondrewd's research and experiments suggests that they did not know what caused some people to turn into the stone and some not, until the experiment with Mitty and Nanachi proved that *love* is the answer- the implication being that had Mitty died she would have become Nanachi's White Whistle. Bondrewd's endgame in this movie was for Prushka to become Riko's Whistle, giving them a means of moving forward and allowing his daughter to go on the Adventure she always wanted while also giving him the opportunity to experience the Blessing for himself. Furthermore, Bondrewd using himself as the offering and it working suggests that the love that it was his love for all humanity and desire to see them survive whatever's coming that allowed him to become a life Reverberating stone. You could almost say this was confirmed by the author who has said that Bondrewd actually does genuinely love the children (which is why he remembers their names and dreams) that he experimented on, but- if you'll pardon my own speculation here- his love has been twisted by the Abyss. I think something similar can be said about Ozen since she is what we'll politely call the definition of "tough love" but we see that she truly cared about Lyza and Malrulk. Don't forget, as fucked up as the White Whistles are, the Abyss itself is a truly fucked up place that drives people to the edge of sanity, and you will see more of this in season 2 Speaking of s2. If you think what happened to Mitty was fucked up, just wait until you find out what happened to Irrumyuui 🙃
Honestly, when I was reading manga, I heavily reconsidered motherhood. I mean, strange coming from a man, but just to think, how much meaning the weight of words: “Mother’s love” are shown there is truly soul crushing
Best papa ever! You called it right that Bondrewd is all just about knowledge but he did care for all the children in a weird way. He built them up so that they could build him up. From here on out it's stuff that we don't know about or what our challengers will encounter. There's an awesome Prushka figure that also has Meinya and a cartridge. Yeah. Prushka's wish was to go on adventures with Riko and that made her a whistle. Prushka was just a child they brought down to Ido Front.
fun fact about the umbra hands : some of them are actual mercenaries hired to kill bondrewd at some point but chose to follow him instead and willingly made themselves vessels for bondrewd's consciousness
37:24 Riko already has her mom's white whistle. It is already made. Why would Lyza need her for that? Also, I don't think Riko has enough love for her mom to be useful for that. They're almost strangers.
Bondrewd is insane. He doesnt just care about scientific progress. He genuinely believes he takes the children on an adventure like he promised them initially. An adventure overflowing with blessings and curses just like thw one he himself went on.
Those children all care for him in their own way just like he cares for them. If that weren't the case, he wouldn't have gotten the blessing. If both parties believe something wholly, it becomes truth according to the abyss.
On your thoughts if Lyza is a good person, I'd like to remind you that the titles for the White Whistles go: "The Mysterious", "The Chosen", then Ozen was "The Immovable", Bondrewd is "The Novel" and Lyza's was THE ANNIHILATOR. I don't think there is any doubt in my mind this woman's brain is wired Gon style to "you are either my friend or MIGHT AS WELL BE DEAD FOR ALL I CARE"
Season 2 just aired last summer. And is nearly caught up with the Manga, just a couple chapters behind last i checked. and the Manga updates SUPER slowly and inconsistently. So probably several years before there's even enough Manga for season 3.
Not the last summer, but summer 2022. And there are already 2 volumes and a half since then (Season 1 adapted the first 3 vol) . Kinema Citrus studio confirmed production of the sequel last June. I think season 3 could be released in the second half of 2025.
@@GTBX01 Agreed, I believe it has also been confirmed they are working on the adaptation as the manga chapters are released so it may not be as long as many think.
@@GTBX01 yeah 7 whole chapters since s2 ended, a good chunk of the story, probably like 6 or 7 episodes worth of story if season 3 ends up being 12 episodes.
ON Bondrewd saying that his blood relation to Prushka is weak but that she is his daughter...consider this: she is a daughter of one of umbra hands, and all umbra hands carry a shard of Bondrewd's soul within them, so that he can control them/move to their body. So, he might have taken over the mommy or daddy umbra hand, and ...used them to make Prushka happen.
Another group of reactors who didn't really get Bondrewd, though it's not that surprising, given how the movie adaptation didn't do this arc justice at all. Not gonna repeat what the others have said, though he certainly has left his name in the history of manga as one of the most intriguing characters out there. I'm gonna paste a long comment which I quite liked that I first saw under another reaction: About Bondrewd: his character is easy to misread because most of the information about him and his motives is given here and there (and some of it was cut from the movie and anime for time), so it's easy to miss. In summary, due to the Zoaholic he lost his ability to feel bad about his actions, everything he says should be taken at face value (he's not trying to be manipulative or trick them at all; in fact, the process WON'T WORK if he's faking it-it HAS to be genuine), and he was trying to recreate what happened to Nanachi on himself so that he could safely explore the sixth layer and bring his findings back to the surface. More specifically: -Bondrewed is the sole reason people know anything about how the Abyss works; what the effects of the curse are, how it's triggered, the fact that it gets weaker further from the center of the shaft, how to make white whistles, etc. He was made a White Whistle because of his accomplishments in helping humanity more safely explore and understand this place. -The creation of a white whistle requires a WILLING human sacrifice. If the person doesn't want to become a white whistle to help the intended user, the process WILL NOT WORK. -Because of that, Bondrewed used the Zoaholic to copy himself, then sacrificed his original body to become his own white whistle. -One of the affects of the Zoaholic is that it destroys your humanity and literally MAKES you go insane. However, Bondrewed was SO dedicated to studying the abyss that when he lost his humanity, rather than becoming a mass murderer or serial rapist or something, he just became a scientist that didn't have the ability to understand what "too far" means. (Granted, that's actually scarier, for someone who's genuinely nice to LITERALLY NOT UNDERSTAND why it's a bad thing to hurt someone (no, not even if it's helping further science, Bondrewed...)) -To help make exploring the abyss even safer, Bondrewed wanted to find a way around the curse of the sixth layer (which will either kill you or turn you into a hollow like Mitty). -Since the curse only affects humans, he needed (what he viewed as) willing sacrifices who would let him study it, ultimately leading to the experiment that Mitty and Nanachi went through. -(The way the kids were transported from the surface wasn't a shortcut or a hidden path, it was literally just an armored box that the Umbral Hands would carry while they descended on the normal path (protecting the box from the monsters themselves).) -In the experiment with Mitty and Nanachi, he had already discovered that "forcing the curse to one container" wouldn't work with animals or two people who didn't care about each other. His next attempt was to try using two good friends (which is why Nanachi was "just in time"), in the hopes that the desire "I must survive to protect my friend" would override the desire "oh god, this hurts, please kill me" while being hit with the curse. -The results of that experiment gave him two ideas: one was the cartridges (which would use the same technology as the elevator to pump the curse away from him and into the person in the cartridge), and the other was to get the same "blessing" that Nanachi had (a body that, while not IMMUNE, was still RESISTANT to the curse). -He tried replicating the experiment on himself (using two of "him", like when he made his white whistle), but unfortunately, while he still had a body that could be hit with the curse, due to the Zoaholic, the abyss no longer saw him as human enough for the same process to work. He couldn't become his own cartridge, nor would the abyss give him its blessing. -Since he couldn't make cartridges (out of) himself, he went back to plan B. He started getting the volunteer kids to like him (using Nanachi as bait to lure them in) and became genuine friends with them. In his mind, he did genuinely care for them and appreciated (what he saw as) their willing sacrifices. Once the feeling was strong enough, he would turn them into cartridges. -While this worked for avoiding the curse, he still couldn't get the blessing. Friendship wasn't strong enough. It needed to be LOVE. -Prushka was the daughter of an Umbral Hand who was being transported in the box (like other children), but there was some sort of accident and the box was damaged, nearly killing her. -Bondrewed decided to become her father to develop a bond of familial love with her (after all, a child wouldn't develop romantic love for him (that would be weird! =O), and an adult wouldn't work at all-they would be too big to fit in a cartridge! So he needed the strongest kind of love that exists between an adult and a child: parental love). -Bondrewed GENUINELY loved Prushka like a daughter. Like with the white whistles, it wouldn't work if he was faking it; it had to be mutual, not one-sided. It's just that, since Bondrewed lost his humanity, he doesn't (and in fact is LITERALLY unable to) feel bad about sacrificing the things he loves for the greater good. (And he doesn't understand why that's bad if the "thing" in question is a person.) -The other requirement to get the blessing was that she had to want to PROTECT him (like Mitty was protecting Nanachi), but he was having trouble getting her to feel that. She loved him, sure, but all that was focused on devotion and the desire for adventuring with him, which-while appreciated-wasn't the emotion he needed her love to focus on. That's why he let one of "him" get killed in front of her, then revealed himself right afterwards; to maximize the feelings of "I don't want papa to die; I must protect him". -Now that Prushka's emotional requirements had been met, he turned her into a cartridge. Then, when she was "used", the emotions between them were the same as the emotions between Nanachi and Mitty in the elevator, and thus the same transformation took place in Bonedrewed. (The SFX in the manga for this moment was "the rumble of scientific triumph".) -Because Prushka was also wanting to sacrifice herself for Riko, she became her white whistle as well. -In the end, Bondrewed was genuinely impressed that they found a way to beat him and was happy that they would get to go learn more about the abyss. In his mind, while it was disappointing that he lost the body he had just gotten, he had still finally reproduced the experimental results he was wanting to, and they had proven that their will was stronger than his, so he had no problem yielding to them. -One small detail that I really like that I've never seen a reactor catch: when Reg tears away part of his mask, the eye reveals that it's a monster under there. But in the final shot, the eye is human. It's like losing to Nanachi and the others helped restore some small portion of his humanity. Just a cool metaphor. =D TL;DR Bondrewed is a fascinating and complex character. He's not an evil asshole, just a friendly scientist who's tragically and TERRIFYINGLY incapable of empathy.
Wait till you find out that Bondrewd was just helping them create "Your worth", facilitate his own transformation and the preparation for the next 2000 years; all in one. Haters gonna hate because they can't believe that someone can be both kind and morally reprehensible at the same time.
Skipping over much of what others have said, I'll give my own personal theory on Bondrewd. To start, in the same sense that Lyza asked Ozen to help her child descend the abyss, what if she asked the same of Bondrewd on her final descent? It is possible at that time Bondrewd set one particular child aside, Prushka, raised her in isolation and set her up to be immediately available to bond with another child adventurer, the child of a white whistle like himself? From the moment they arrived he stated he assumed their intention was to gather the materials for her white whistle. How else could Lyza assume her child could descend beyond the 5th layer now that we know what it requires? Concerning Bondrewed.. yes he is evil when you look at his actions. He is magnitudes worse than Ozen, but she was evil too when she was thrashing Reg, wasn't she? White whistles are a special type of person, I believe they are especially susceptible to the will of the abyss. That maybe it is a minded thing and they are furthering its own will. What about Lyza? It is implied that Torka, her husband, is her white whistle.. as Bondrewd stated it takes a participant who is willing to give their own life to farther another's journey. Maybe that also explains the way Riko is so hellbent on attacking the abyss? Others have explained the "papa pole" line, so I won't go into that, but I hate that it seemed to detract from the experience of that scene as a whole. The flashback of the immediate bonding to Rico that Prushka experienced. That scene and the accompanying music is 10/10, If you have not listened to much of the OST, I highly recommend listening to the song for that sequence, it is perfection. ua-cam.com/video/ojIKoKNBwN4/v-deo.htmlsi=FK3hQeBO4z5aqTtY I cannot wait to experience season 2 with The React Pack! It delves further into the ides of one's value, bonds, love, and one's true desires. It builds on what we have endured and learned about the abyss in a fantastical way!
I think they’ll be alive but either they will lose their humanity or be the exception and retain their humanity. They might even find a way to ascend the abyss and survive
Its always so funny watching reactions to this movie because the biggest reaction is always just the way Prushka naturally looked when she was younger over even the actual fucked up moments
Bondrewd is probably one of my favorite villains of all time. Zero malice or hatred. Just a guy who simply wants to experiment and has absolutely zero moral restraints holding him back. If he was doing something that didn't require human sacrifice, he'd probably be a really chill guy to hang out with.
After I watched this movie I had to take a break, no other anime has ever made me straight up feel sick to my stomach, I'm still mentally preparing myself for season 2
I don't mean to be that guys but and yes also movie spoilers but yknow since the movie is here and all . . . . . . . . . . no matter how you slice it, there was no way for Riko's team to continue on without a white whistle, sure they could have had Bondrewd come with em but EH. dude has his own agenda. Literally the only way was for Prushka to form that bond with Riko and have that all happen to her its cruel its INSANELY messed up but its also the inevitable tl;dr: what do you mean Bondrewd is evil, he literally gave them a white whistle /obvious sarcasm
Some people view Bondrewd as a guy with messed up morals and standards, but in the end, he just wanted to learn as much about the abyss as he could. And the only way to learn the secrets of a monstrous place is to become a monster yourself. One would have to sacrifice their humanity to fully understand the mysteries of the abyss, and bondrewd was willing to go that far for that sake
Bondrewd is a great representation of necessary evil even if you destroy all bad people in one night intrusive thoughts still remain knowledge doesn’t need humanity to exist but humans and other smart creatures will thrive thinking outside morality
Season 2 is not the end of the story, though the manga hasn't gotten much farther than the end of season 2 (def not enough of make a season 3 yet) and it takes a real long time for a new manga chapter to come out, so it's gonna be a long time before a 3rd season comes out.
This movie was very bittersweet, I'm with Miss Morgan on feeling somewhat nauseated. I shudder with both fear and excitement on what the next season will bring.
Really do recommend in your free time to watch a Bondrewd explained video, so many layers to this character that everyone assumes is evil but couldn't be further from the truth. All I will say is that in order to receive the blessing both the person dying and the person being blessed must LOVE each other whether it's romantical or the love of a family both members must live each other and Bondrewd thnx to the Zoaholic made him unable to view anything other than fact which makes him loose his empathy which is dangerous in a scientist. And think about it Bondrewd had been discovering cures for diseases, artifacts that help mankind etc. with the Blessing he received from Prushka he could dive deeper and return with even more ways to better humanity but it requires the sacrifice of a loved one to achieve which is what makes the Abyss so terrifying. And this is just a piece of his character definitely give him so more looking into, love the reactions and can't wait for season 2...sosu
Its not even a boss fight. The kids are just throwing a tantrum for misunderstanding something dad said. In that world....there is no reason for what Bondrewd is doing to end. What he is doing is in fact needed and important. Sadly the world makes this as grey as possible.
i like bondrewd he's cool as heis savage but he does geniuily care but he is alot but for the sake of science that is needed at the end of the day you cant replace his skills and ability
I personally love bondrewd, what he's doing is evil but he does it for the sake of progress, for the sake of preventing deaths that would have been otherwise inevitable. From a humanitarian standpoint he is making progress in an effective and timely matter that will allow humanity to progress further into the future, not from a moral standpoint as he is too far removed from human. He loves all of the children genuinely not because of what he is going to do to them but because he recognizes the importance and value of the individual. I see him as a complex gray character
Despite how fucked up Bondrewd is. He is a necessary individual needed for this universe to function. Without his morale grey experiments, way more cave divers would had died with lack of knowledge and equipment meant for exploring the abyss. Ngl one of thee best villain out there.
Why do people say this tho? Even if he is acting on the same curiosity that rika has, she would never knowingly torture people. She would sacrifice herself first everytime.
@@BenjaminBIGCA7 because everything he does he does for the betterment of science and humanity. He also does it with genuine love and no malicious intent all while literally not having the “humanity” due to using the soul slave machine. He also actually helped Riko on her journey getting her own white whistle and granting Prushkas wish of going on a journey
Lyza was already a White Whistle when she married Torka; she's wearing it in the flashback when she introduces him to Ozen. He is not her White Whistle. As further proof, in the manga we've learned her whistle's name and it's not Torka.
The most well-accepted reason for Reg being able to fire off the incinerator so many times is that Ido Front's power overcharged him beyond his normal levels to the point where it's like he's almost directly plugged into a wall socket. From my theory, Reg holds the concept of energy/power within his blood so when he gets too much power he not only stays awake as the excess power sustains his consciousness but the excess energy needs to be expelled which can explain the black aura surrounding him earlier. You saw that his shots went up from only three left to nine at the end of the movie right? As for why he couldn't use it before, well, the "somebody" probably made him remember that he could fire off his incinerator in short bursts which weren't as destructive and didn't drain away his energy as quickly as the big one. So basically, he remembered he could fire off small bursts and did it a couple of times because he was overcharged. I think it was a necessary piece of writing cuz otherwise they had absolutely zero chances of defeating Bondrewd. Under normal circumstances, I believe the reason it knocks him out pretty quickly is because the blood carrying his energy is akin to our own blood carrying glucose, as the same thing happens when our glucose levels are low. When he fires off the incinerator in that demonic state, it's just him shaving off all the extra energy hanging on him, that's why the black aura vanishes and he regains consciousness. Which means that he basically went from overpower to full power after that first shot. Don't always believe what the show tells you lol, MiA has a pretty huge fan theory community for a reason.
He can fire off as many shots as he has power for during the grace period between firing the first shot and when he shuts down for 2 hours. He has 10 shots left at the end of the movie. The MIA fan theory community is full of idiots talking out of their asses and convincing each other their theories are true, then forgetting that those theories aren't actually in the series or even based on anything at all and spreading them around as misinformation.
Bonedrewed really did care for prushka , otherwise he wouldn't have survived the abysm . Not everything isd "all bad all good" . mff You didn't understand the characters even with flashbacks . You just repeated she is being used and this was all an experiment when the scene clearly was telling you otherwise 5:44 more like your hate is all one sided
Bondrewd is the reincarnation of a logical darwinian society fallacy. He doesn't care as long as it works or make sense. That's where morals come in, and material science can never provide you with such a bless, thus he adopted the idea of love and made it an exceptional standard. He's still biased to the materialistic side of life, add to that the influence of the Abyss on his character after he gave his body to acquire his white whistle, you can say the Abyss made him less crazier than he would've been under those circumstances. Despite all that, we don't know his past or what lead him to be ambitious about discovering the Abyss, but all i can say is whoever nobody was sane from the first, everyone in this anime are crazy selfish maniacs betting their lives on the unknown.
Bondrewd does lots of things that are absolutely disgustingly wrong. Hell, even Bondrewd himself, the eternal optimist, states that he regrets amputating Reg's arm. At the _absolute minimum_ he did at least one thing wrong.
lol the creator explained "papa pole" is just how prushka understands the difference between males and females.
@@SilentioMortus I think you responded to the wrong comment, i never said evil or mad scientist.
@@nullakjg767 I didn't say you said that. That's my point.
@@SilentioMortus shoulda just made the comment without replying to mine if it had nothing to do with me.
Prushka: Papa I want to be a white whistle
Bondrewd: Say less
Better yet:
"I want to be a white whistle, *just like Papa"*
"Say less"
Bondrewd: "did you say 'mask on'? Say less"
Nah this is messed up 💀
@@Darko807 "so you wanna go on adventures? let me pack you a lunchbox..." :V
That music choir is also entirely sung by children, as are most, if not all Bondrewd related themes, IIRC
"Power of love and friendship" hits in a different way in this anime
That's why we like him so much. He's proof a good villain doesn't have to be evil.
Bondrewd is more like a computer trying to solve the abyss than a human being after using the zoaholic and making himself into a whistle.
Did he make himself a whistle? @@AdogFTW
@@fatikook221 No. He used his original body to make a whistle.
@@AdogFTW damn I think I forgot a little bit it's been a minute since I watched it, thank you 😊 🙏
Guys, Nanachi said pretty clearly that they can't kill him because he has many bodies. Thats all.
A lot of reactors seems to overlook this.
*Minor Spoilers for this Movie Only*
Pruschka was the daughter of one of the umbral hands and was originally injured when the carrier crashed.
The whistle is needed to turn on the descent machine, but it can control pretty much any artifact (remember that Ozen used the whistle to open the curse-repelling vessel in Season 1.)
They are nearly caught up to the manga now so we will have to wait to get Season 3.
*Heavy Spoilers for Later in the Series below*
I don't think Bondrewd would stand a chance against Faputa so that's not much of a threat really. Plus I hate for Bondrewd to keep sporagmos since I'm betting he stole it from the "girl-type" aubade.

This felt like a horror movie so many times. Like I was being urged to look at something I wasn't supposed to look at. As Nanachi always says..."maaaaaa"
The ost is amazing. Kevin is a mosnter.
Kevin Penkin is Zaddy status
Kevin is the GOAT
Kevin's a God Tier.
His mask is also symbolic of his character as its split into 2 half's by the purple light down the middle:
-One half being the loving father
-And the other half being the cold hearted machine
He's literally meant to be a character we will truly never understand/comprehend as he's someone who's "TRANSCENDED" his own humanity into something else completely different due to the Abyss. They literally named OST just for him that has "TRANSCENDANCE" in it that plays when he's on screen. He literally symbolizes the main themes of "Lovecraftian Horror" aka "Cosmic Horror" which are:
"Fear Of The Unknown"
"Detachment & Isolation"
"The Fragility Of Humanity/Sanity"
Thats just to name a few. The Abyss also symbolizes these themes which parallels Bondrewds character.
A lot of people somehow forget that the experiment of him gaining
"The Blessing" aka turning into a hollow as we saw in the movie can ONLY WORK based off genuine real LOVE and it has to work BOTH WAYS, it couldn't only be the children that loved him and he didn't feel the same way back or else the experiment would have never worked.
In the past he had already benefited society as a whole through his experiments but he had done so at the expense of all lives he deemed necessary to sacrifice, because for Bondrewd The Novel even his own daughter Prushka who he loved so much was no exception to the rule "All is worth sacrificing for the sake of progress even that which he loves."
Bondrewd objectively believes that what he's doing will provide benefits to the scientific field in studying the Abyss in the long run while morally it's obviously wrong what he's doing.
This comment deserves more recognition
Literally a "Power of Love" Anime. 😈
Yeah… we will see more of its marvellous capabilities on the 6th level… because what love is more pure, than that of a mother and a child?
😭💀
Some points you either missed or didn't have the background information to notice
One *the mask is not important*, you guys kept talking about taking it and destroying it, but that literally wouldn't have done anything, the mask is literally just to distinguish him as the main Bondrewd
In the Manga it's also specified that each of his Umbra Hands volunteered to join him with the Zaoholic, and some of them were bounty hunters that had been sent to kill him
There's an additional scene from Prushka's flashback that showed she *absolutely* knew what the cartridges were and even volunteered for the procedure because she wanted to help her papa, she knew what she was doing and Bondrewd was fulfilling her wish.
Don't forget, as fucked up as the White Whistles are, the Abyss itself is a truly fucked up place that drives people to the edge of sanity, and you will see more of this in season 2
Speaking of s2.
I think everyone else have already given opinion the same as what I was thinking so I'd just say, "Subarashii."
Oh, Nan to Subarashii…
fun fact about the umbra hands : some of them are actual mercenaries hired to kill bondrewd at some point but chose to follow him instead and willingly made themselves vessels for bondrewd's consciousness
"She doesn't have a whistle."
Me: "Well, about that..."
Now if go back to lyrics of season one ED:
Reg singing: "Your left hand, with my right hand"
wink wink
@@GTBX01amazing news I had no idea they announced a new season.
The best dad in fiction has arrived ☠
Still cute you know its the "main" Bondrewd when he starts giving kids head pats
Another group of reactors who didn't really get Bondrewd, though it's not that surprising, given how the movie adaptation didn't do this arc justice at all. Not gonna repeat what the others have said, though he certainly has left his name in the history of manga as one of the most intriguing characters out there. I'm gonna paste a long comment which I quite liked that I first saw under another reaction:
About Bondrewd: his character is easy to misread because most of the information about him and his motives is given here and there (and some of it was cut from the movie and anime for time), so it's easy to miss.
Ooh season 2 is going to be amazing 🥰🥰
29:09 what the Bondrewd doin

I cannot wait to experience season 2 with The React Pack! It delves further into the ides of one's value, bonds, love, and one's true desires. It builds on what we have endured and learned about the abyss in a fantastical way!
I'll be honest with you all, I haven't seen a villain as deranged as Bondrewd in anime before
My only thought about the ending of Made in Abyss is that I don't expect Riko and her crew to be alive, I just pray that they all remain the same.
I think they’ll be alive but either they will lose their humanity or be the exception and retain their humanity. They might even find a way to ascend the abyss and survive
I was drained emotionally and physically after this movie.
Looking forward to Season 2 for more misery!
I'm just here to say: This show is a masterpiece.
50:31 Such a Beautiful scene!
Fantastic film!
This guy makes Ging seem like a great Dad lmao
The Power of Friendship... and it ends with them going into a Saiyan pod
The zoaholic is not the mask guys...
Now let's turn the emotion to 11 for season 2. It's honestly the most gut wrenching anime I've ever watched.
I don't mean to be that guys but
and yes also movie spoilers but yknow since the movie is here and all

no matter how you slice it, there was no way for Riko's team to continue on without a white whistle, sure they could have had Bondrewd come with em but EH. dude has his own agenda. Literally the only way was for Prushka to form that bond with Riko and have that all happen to her
its cruel
its INSANELY messed up
but its also the inevitable
tl;dr: what do you mean Bondrewd is evil, he literally gave them a white whistle /obvious sarcasm
My heart 😢😢😢
Just remember that bondrewd is already weaken by other white whistle at this point, just imagine how strong he is with all his equipment
Great reaction! Cant wait for season 2 🙏
Bondrewd is a great representation of necessary evil even if you destroy all bad people in one night intrusive thoughts still remain knowledge doesn’t need humanity to exist but humans and other smart creatures will thrive thinking outside morality
Pretty sure Bondrewd has no sexual drive.
He manipulates kids into loving him and turns them into cartridges so he can ascend. The man is evil. End Of story.
The absolute disgust and eye roll from Morgan at 51:32 😭😭😭😭
are you planning to make a discussion episode for season 1/ the movie or react to season 2? :)
Sorry, but infanticide is where I draw the line. You are evil
Despite how fucked up Bondrewd is. He is a necessary individual needed for this universe to function. Without his morale grey experiments, way more cave divers would had died with lack of knowledge and equipment meant for exploring the abyss. Ngl one of thee best villain out there.
I'm so happy😂
Great reaction!
What a movie, it can hit hard!

Why would they need to? It's self-evident.

Bondrewd did nothing wrong
I'm pretty sure but could be wrong but Riko's mom wasn't a white whistle when her husband died and I assumed her whistle was her husband.
She was a White Whistle. She was already famous when he died.
Yes, there is a memory of her saying she married him and you can see she's a white whistle then, and he's a black whistle.
Lyza was already a White Whistle when she married Torka; she's wearing it in the flashback when she introduces him to Ozen. He is not her White Whistle. As further proof, in the manga we've learned her whistle's name and it's not Torka.
Midle one is smart
Welcome to the trauma!

😍Dani🥰
Bondrewd did nothing wrong, and also is responsible for 100% of nanachi’s good memories and experiences
