NEW MOON Darkside New Moon by Children of the Light An imposing circular mirror broken into fifteen moving pieces takes central stage in Children of the Light’s renewed collaboration with American band Darkside. Light projected onto the fractured mirror glows in clouds of smoke and beams over the exuberant crowd, hiding and revealing the surrounding space, immersing musicians and audience alike in a mesmerising play of irradiative dimensions. Children of the Light are literally pulling strings live on stage to move the mirror’s pieces and transform it into an immense, abstract map of the world. Reflecting loss, shattered illusions and communities drifting apart, New Moon simultaneously celebrates new beginnings and the beauty of imperfection. As the separate pieces are slowly realigned into a circle, the work conveys a sense of catharsis or healing, a liberating realisation that different perspectives don’t need to be absorbed into a universal ideal. For the duration of the concert, the audience can transcend their differences in a shared experience induced by Darkside’s captivating music and the exhilarating, spiritual spectacle of New Moon. In various ways, New Moon is picking up the pieces of Mirror Moon, the felicitous result of Children of the Light’s very first collaboration. They created it in 2012 as an experimental stage design and scenography for Nicholas Jaar and Dave Harington’s Darkside, who subsequently toured the world with it. At the final concert in 2014, Harrington smashed the mirror, an image gaining in relevance right up to today. The pieces were collected by a fan who sold them online, and Mirror Moon was dispersed across the globe. Children of the Light took this as the starting point for their set design for Darkside’s new tour. The mirror of New Moon, three metres in diameter, seems to have been hit by lightning, but when the jagged fragments start drifting apart, they become like broken pieces of porcelain, mended by a golden glow in the Japanese tradition of kintsugi. For Darkside too, touring again is much like a new beginning. After the last show in 2014, Jaar and Harrington hadn’t performed live together until the memorable kick-off at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in September 2022, where New Moon had its debut. On May 17, the European leg of the tour starts in Lyon, with Children of the Light. Their physical presence on stage adds a performative quality to New Moon that emphasises its autonomous character. Even as Children of the Light move about as anonymous, near-invisible stagehands dressed in black, their scenography no longer functions as a support for the main act: it has become an artform in its own right. Both the band and Children of the Light have come full circle. As the light from behind the mirror starts to burst through the cracks, it is like an irresistible force breaking free, an endless source of energy, the scattering of matter into a newly forming universe.
