LAKE COMO GUIDE
OUR APARTMENT
We stayed in Veleso in a gorgeous air bnb called ‘gorgeous panoramic lodge in authentic village charm’. The drive up is very windy and a little hairy. I’d say you’d definitely need a car if you’re staying here. The apartment is gorgeous and peaceful, and it really is a tiny village with 2 restaurants and not a lot else. Good if you like hiking (we didn’t).
DAY 1
- We walked to Bella Vista on our first night and it was gorgeous. Family run, amazing food and views. Loved it.
DAY 2
- We drove to the next village for a tiny little shop (limited selection) where an Italian man served us (cash only but a cash point 1 min away) like going back in time.
- Drove down to the lake for dinner to Locanda Tre Rose, Nesso. Beautiful views, good food, nice atmosphere.
DAY 3
- Drove to Bellagio it was busy but we really easily found parking in the centre and it was only about €15 for the whole day - we might have just been lucky. Bellagio has lots of little shops and cute streets and restaurants. I’d say you only need half a day.
- Took a ferry from Bellagio to Varenna - it’s very pretty and I’d say worth doing.
- Walk into the town in Varenna and go to one of the Villas. We went to Villa Monastero and bought tickets for the garden and the museum although the garden is the prettiest part.
DAY 4
- Rent a boat for 3 hours (Rent Fun Boat, Faggeto Lario) expensive (€120 + petrol) but SO worth doing, even for a shorter time. LOVED it.
- Dinner at Villa Lario - on the lake, beautiful, peaceful, amazing service.
I’d say you could manage without a car if you stayed on the actual lake.
RESTAURANTS
- Bella Vista, Veleso - gorgeous, family run, charming
- Locanda Tre Rose, Nesso - good food, beautiful views
- Villa Lario, Pognana Lario - beautiful hotel, peaceful, directly on the lake, incredible service, great food.
THINGS TO DO
- rent a boat!!
- Bellagio, Varetta or some other towns - easy to get ferry between them
- A Villa with gardens (we loved Villa Monastero)
