Funny to watch someone listen and hear this for the first time. Brings smiles to us Prog type listeners. This CD spent many months in the disc player of my car when it was released. Just so indulging I couldn't stop listening to it. Enjoy the rest. The whole thing is a trip for sure.
It's been way too long since I listened to this album in full, and I can't think of a better way to hear it again than to witness somebody listening to it for the first time.
This is one of very few perfect albums for me. Not one note or part is out of place, yet it never feels quantized or over-produced. This is what happens when every member of a band plays 100 percent proficiently and with purpose under the direction of someone who knows exactly what it should sound like. That specific magic can't and won't ever be reproduced or found elsewhere. Bravo.
@@JimNewstead its amazing that it translates to a first-time listener. When you actually dive into the story, its about a man in a coma who cant decide whether he prefers the real world or the world in his mind while he was in a coma after attempting suicide. Its really fun to see peoples reaction to the musical spectacle and how accurately people “feel” what is the theme of the music.
you described this band really well at around the 11:00 mark. This band has crazy range it is amazing. I was fortunate to see them live 4 different times and that second song gives you an idea of the range they work with live.
One of their best IMO. Bought this one on CD when it was pretty newly released. In those days one could still find new interesting music via the radio (!) and then go out and buy the albums.
This album is amazing! It's basically about/telling the story of a friend of his who's contemplating suicide. Sadly at the end he does in real life and in the album kill himself. Absolutely amazing transcendent album for sure.
I'm glad you're getting to this record on UA-cam now! This was my first ever prog rock album back when I was 15 years old and still listening mostly to jazz records. Completely blew my face off and changed my life forever. It's lovely to see the enthusiasm from someone else hearing it for the first time. Keep up the great work!
Happy belated birthday mate. Good way to spend it for sure. Deloused was the first album I had heard from TMV. It was life altering for me in many ways. Mostly positive, but the moments that weren't still contributed to the man I am today, and I would never change any of it. I hope you're enjoying it!
(late) Happy Birthday!! This is an amazing album, but personally i like Francis the Mute a lot more. Still, this is The Mars Volta doing what the do best. Lots of sound and screaming vocals balancing the chaos on the edge og being out of control. "sounds like bipolar disorder" is a great description of TMV.
Forgot to say Happy Birthday in my previous comment! This is why you are on of my favorite channels, Jim. Aside from The Mars Volta being one of my all time favorites, it's the passion in your words when you speak of them as I do (a fan for 20 years) but you have yet to hear most of their discography and I'm so excited to witness your journey with this box set (which I am supremely jealous of) lol
From the first moment I heard TMV back in 2003 they were one of my favourite all time bands. Their sound was so different, so unique but so complete, it was all my favourite genres rolled into one. The punk, the prog, the latin, the jazz, the fat grooves, the batshit craziness - absolute perfection! Love this band! Happy belated birthday, this was a great way to celebrate it!
The album is based on a story about a man who is in a coma while the good and evil of his mind battle for superiority. So your comment about it being like a split personality is spot on. I don’t normally listen to much of this kind of music, but I generally consider de-loused to be one of the greatest albums ever made. The guitar work on it is absolutely phenomenal. Rodriguez-Lopez absolutely outdid himself on this record.
Happy birthday, Jim! Mine's on the 12th, so we're basically neighbours. Stoked to go through some more Mars Volta, hope their obscure new project/album won't take until our next birthdays to arrive.
Good choice. A friend got me into this album way back when it was new (Eighteen years ago, apparently. I was in high school. Where does the time go?). It was probably one of the first prog rock albums I listened to and it really blew me away. I'd never heard anything like it. Been a while since I've given it a spin so glad to do a listen through with you.
Oh Happy 8 days ago Birthday Jim🥳🥳🥳🥳👍 sry I didn't watch this earlier... I have listened to Mars Volta a little since you did box set opening....and I quickly bought a few....including this. This record is ace.... Another band that makes me think of Tool/Dream Theatre...but for me I can love MVs approach more for some reason... !🌟👍....I'm sure I will hear it differently again whilst listening along with you....ok here goes....
Honestly this album was a great choice! Although I agree with you that it’s very chaotic, it’s also like a rollercoaster for your ears. I also like that it feels like it’s taking you through an ever changing ride. My favorite song would have to be “This Apparatus must be Unearthed” it’s a definite stand out
Probably my favourite album of 2003. Still a masterpiece to this day Actually tied with Muse - Absolution Sleepy Jackson - Lovers was also a great album from 2003. St Anger was not haha
My favorite album ever. It's so damn good and I love every song in it. Only album where I love every song. So excited to see them live soon. I thought I would never had that chance since I discovered them after 2013.
I congratulated you already, so I won't do it again. Too much happiness never done anyone any good. 😉 But the Mars Volta is absolutely brilliant, every time! I've fell in love with them right from the start, love at first hearing. It's the way how Mars Volta dances on the tightrope between the order and chaos swaying from side to side with a teasing grin on their faces.
Happy Twenty Ninth again Jim! Beautiful box set mate, and an absolute monster album to start the show. I already know you're going to dig the shit out of it. Tragic story with this band, but goddamn what a game changing debut. A wild animal is a great analogy. I can't wait to see you wade through this one, especially to see your reaction Cicatriz. Make sure to peek at the lyrics on this one, brilliant and relevant as fuck still. Take good care mate!
I love experimental music.....the lead singer sounds like the offspring of Muse and Dream Theatre to me...but I really like the feel of it....I think in current rock band terms these guys and King Gizzard really go out there with variety. Have you heard L.W. Jim? I think it's now my no 1 by the Lizard Wizards....you will love it!
Thanks Jim, when I first heard this album it made all the other music seem flat for a while. It is in a different category to most other stuff as a listening experience. Only King Crimson’s Red and Lark’s Tongues in Aspic has the same visceral impact for me. My brother had exactly he same thoughts when I lent him the cd, a pure adrenaline rush. It’s not an everyday listen, but when you are in the mood it is tricky to beat.
@@JimNewstead The Mrs. and I listened and watched and enjoyed last evening. Looking forward to part two tonight! If you get a moment you should Google the story behind this album. The story within the story. Pretty intense. The opening intro of the album is intended to sound like the ambulance ride to the hospital after the main character attempted suicide. Listen again and enjoy. Have a great day, Jim. Cheers!
This was their best album imo and one of the best rock albums ever, if not *the* best from start to finish. Rick Rubin (producer) brought just a little bit of control to their inherent wildness and it was a perfect match. If Frances the Mute (the song) had been a part of Frances the Mute the album, it would be a close call for their best. But to me there is nothing that matches early Volta except some stuff from the big dogs of the 1970s like Floyd and maybe one or two Tool albums. It's a short list!
I couldn’t disagree more. Deloused wears its influence on its sleeve a bit too much for my tastes. They grew into their own unique sound later on. For my ear, Frances does everything this record does, but way better. Then Amputecture takes them to their creative peak. Then after that, they become a completely different band. *edit: i just realized you called this a “rock” album. I suppose given that context, this is their best straight forward rock album.
I think what contributes to the sound and feel, aside from the excellent drum sounds, is that all the ambient stuff in the background and weird tones aren't from experimenting with studio production but it's from largely analog guitar effects. I presume it is all recorded through guitar speakers. Also a bit of trivia, pretty sure Flea from the chili peppers plays bass throighout and john frusciante is often credited with trackong some guitar parts too
hello Jim, I wish I had watched this video on "our" birthday, better late than never ! love your cup ! did you drink coffee or beer for your birthday video?

Exactly right about the bass and drums. The rhythm section is the leash you hold onto.
