Eriatarka was the first song I heard from TMV, downloaded it from Kazaa. I was 16 at the time. After hearing it, drove as fast as I could to Best Buy and bought this album and listened to it all night on my discman. Changed my life, what a band.

Drunkenship of Lanterns was the first song I ever heard from The Mars Volta because I heard that Flea played bass on the track. Was an instant fan.

RHCP was also the lubricant that helped me to discover and appreciate these guys. I hardly ever go back and listen to RHCP unless it's on the radio or something. TMV, on the other hand, is right up there with Tool for me, which is practically daily listening status

This is simply one of the best debut albums ever. It's interesting that the songs have actually rather simple, almost pop-like structures, but they are dressed in *so much riff* and rhythmic patterns. :D Not to mention Cedric's eccentric lyricism.

Yeah, it's a sneaky way to get people to listen to your prog rock without them realizing it. So many moments on this record that are so damn catchy mixed in with the rabid fever dream that is the rest of the music.

If you like the accesable parts of TMV you should check out Cedirc and Omar's band called Antemasque. Here's a live set of theirs with Travis Barker from Blink 182 on drums: ua-cam.com/video/MfT3VkfQnwg/v-deo.html

I've always admired the guitar playing of Omar. How it sounds like it's all over the place, completely random fast notes, but he definitely knows what he's doing. He's without a faintest shadow of doubt a Guthrie Govan league player.

The Mars Volta's ability to paint a picture with sound is amazing. I've never heard a band where my mind starts conjuring up dreamlike landscapes just from the instrumental portions of their songs.

This is astonishingly good music. Didn't notice the upper range overwash, but know what you mean, in my inability to listen to Rush, band or bloviator. To me, upon first exposure, it was as if Bjork had joined up with a sort of psychedelic Return to Forever/Van der Graaf Generator/Frank Zappa hybrid, and they were as in a cave, grooving with a Pict and a few plectra. There's grooviness in them grooves.

If you thought this was a bit too much I would highly recommend their last 2 albums 'Octahedron' and 'Noctourniquet'. Much more streamlined music and not as much chaos, while at the same time still being distinctly The Mars Volta. For the last album especially.

I get your points Jim but I'd suggest in this case..... all your fave bands are immediately identifiable for their unique perhaps focussed or refined sound with a note or two....my fave recent bands at mo Id always recognise with just a bar or tiny snippet....Opeth, Sparks, KGATLW, Cult of Luna.....I'm not sure yet I'd be able to do that with TMV as it's so craaaaaaaaaazy.....in good way.🧐🤘I might accidentally say DT or Muse or even Spock's Beard or Devin Townsend....as they exist in same ballpark for me sonically....but who cares if it works....I'd agree they might be ott.....but who else is doing that I wonder?🧐

I always wondered if the squashed frequency spectrum on the record was a mastering-stage decision to make all of the instruments "fit" audibly even on cruddy speakers where there would be loss of the low and high ends (e.g. car stereos, old iPod earbuds and the like), but their other albums don't sound as much like that so I'm really not sure (though Bedlam in Goliath is probably the most similar EQ-wise). I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall in the studio when they mixed/mastered everything; that would have been unbelievably educational to me!

I don't agree with you saying there's not enough bass. The bass is super high up in the mixing of the record. It is a very jazzy sort of bass tone with lots of treble in there so I get what you're saying. And the kick drum isn't very distinctive
