ATL - International Traveler Arriving at gate in Concourse E and Walking to Main Customs (long walk)

  • For International Travelers who arrive at E-Gates there is a loooooong walk that they must take to get to the main International Terminal Customs/Immigration area and then Baggage Claim. This video shows walking from the farthest gate in Concourse E (E-35) all the way to the Customs/Immigration arrival hall. The first part of the walk is above the gates of Concourse E and then the path travels below ground level and under the tarmac where airplanes taxi to and from their gates. I have tried to make the long walking video a little more interesting by including some facts about the airport or the walk at various points during the video.

    Lord help us! We are in our late 70's and would definitely need wheel chair transportation for that long walk. Thanks for the video, despite my hundreds of trips through ATL, I have never flown International, and been in that area of the airport terminals. I didn't know that these halls even existed.

    I never knew concourse E had that those upper corridors. I’ve only flew international on foreign airlines from Atlanta and they usually deplane in concourse F. I’ve walked between E and F before and always wondered where those escalators came from behind the glass before you made your way downstairs to connect to the international terminal.

    • @bozy106

      Same here. I had no clue until we deplaned at an E-gate

  • @richmartin1427
    @richmartin1427 2 роки тому +4

    The E concourse was the old international concourse. Pre COVID the unused passport control you passed would be for connecting passengers while you would still use F if you were ATL bound. Prior to F you would use that upper passport control…then take a long escalator down to the level below the gates to claim baggage…then recheck baggage regardless of if you were local or connecting. If you were local, you would take the plane train back to the main terminal (current domestic terminal) and reclaim bags there.

    What they should consider doing is to expand the F gates greatly, with the blueprint inspiration from Beijing Capital International Airport (BCIA), to reduce walking times to immigration by placing immigration counters in the center of the concourse, and then let international arrivals passengers go down to the Plane Train after immigration. Then, in this case, the E gates could be converted back to a domestic concourse.

    I just did this asinine walk for the nth time in my life today and decided to google it. Thank you for the video. I am based out of ATL, and mainly fly DL, so I almost ALWAYS get dumped onto this ridiculous journey. I didn't think to video it like you (THANK YOU!), but did clock it on my Apple Watch, but it was more than your .6 miles until I FINALLY got to the International Terminal Atrium, at about 25 minutes (not stopping at all, and taking the moving walkways). I travel regularly to a lot of third world countries for extended periods (2 or 3 months), so take a non-rolling max size carry on backpack that is NOT light, and my smaller pack. I just can't believe when they designed all this crap that this is the best they could come up with! ABSOLUTELY should be a train or something. BAD PLANNING ATL!!! I bet this pisses off a whole lotta peeps coming into ATL for the first time, it does me each time I have to do it. Great first impression, welcome to ATL! DUH! At least I finally broke down and got Global Entry, so didn't have to wait in the customs line. Then on top of it all, I totally believe in public transportation, so when you are done doing all this idiotic underground walking, then I have to get on a 20+ minute bus ride (depending on traffic) to get from International to the Domestic terminal. So much for the busiest airport, also the stupidest in my book. Just add it to all the other bad things that hurt this city's image. Off of soapbox.

    • @bozy106
      @bozy106  Рік тому +1

      There DOES need to be a quicker way to make the land-side trip from international to domestic. (And a shorter walk to customs from concourse E.). Additionally, Despite being the de facto capital of the southeastern U.S., the City of Atlanta as a whole doesn’t have a very robust public transportation system like other cities such as NYC, Chicago, or Boston. MARTA is a joke compared to their public transportation systems.

    • @TheCaribeso
      @TheCaribeso Рік тому

      You are so right about that. I travel all around the world, and in cities of comparable, or even smaller size than Atlanta, they have a much more extensive metro system. I happen to be lucky to be within a 10 minute walk of a Marta station, which with a trasfer in 5P will get me to the airport, or Midtown. But other than that it’s fairly useless. And besides, the lack of coverage, the frequency of trains in Atlanta is about 5 to 7 times as long as other cities, which have trains and buses every three or four minutes. But I think part of the problem is also the mindset, I think most middle-class people in this town refuse to take Marta…

      You can take the Plane train from Concourse A to Concourse F (where international baggage claim is located) but I’m not sure if you can actually get into the international baggage claim area. I’ve never done this but it’s possible it can be done - I’m just not certain. If it could be done you would then have to figure out where to go from there. If your final stop is Atlanta mo problem. Otherwise you would need to redo security checks etc.

      The airline should transfer it automatically on a domestic flight, no need to claim it. Just to be sure when you check in for your first flight and drop your bag off ask them if it will be “checked through”. If it is an incoming international flight you will have to claim it and then almost immediately recheck it. If it is an outgoing international it will be checked through. I hope that makes sense…. I just recently booked a flight for my Filipina fiancee who is coming from the Philippines and she will be landing at this airport for customs on a k1 visa. I went through this same airport back in July of 2019 after visiting her in the Philippines. Things do look different now. I am hoping to possibly book a same day round trip from Roanoke VA to this airport and back in the same day because I want to try and meet her in the airport after she gets through customs. To be honest I'm concerned that she might get lost after she gets through customs trying to find her luggage and the fact she has to recheck it to her last flight and find the gate. This is a very big airport. I may go and meet her that day so I can fly back with her. And the walk to customs looks like it will take longer than 20 minutes to get to. She will have a little over 6 hours layover so that will help her some if I'm not able to fly over to Hartsfield and meet her. I just don't want her to get lost.

    • @bozy106
      @bozy106  2 роки тому

      The walk really depends on if her airplane arrives at a gate in concourse E (which will be a long walk to customs) or her flight arrives at a gate in concourse F (which will be a short walk). Either way, the path you will have to walk will only allow you to go to customs and no where else. There is only 1 international baggage claim area and the key is following the sign directing her to “Connecting Baggage & Flights” as shown at timestamp 17:28 . • @bozy106
      @bozy106  Рік тому

      Its likely in the past you debarked the plane at one of the gates in Concourse F. When you arrive at these F-gates you only go down and then after a short walk you go through Immigration/Customs. This is because most all flights coming into Concourse F are international arrivals. However, if you arrive at a gate in Concourse E, it depends on if it is an international or domestic flight as to where you go. If its domestic, you exit onto the Concourse where all the other gates, the Plane Train, etc are. If it is an international flight they make you go up an escalator which leads to a hallway above the regular gates on Concourse E. This hallway funnels incoming international travelers towards Immigration/Customs. There is no way to exit this hallway without going through Immigration/Customs, therefore no way for travelers to sneak into the country without having their documents examined. At the end of this hallway over E-gates, you go down a series of escalators that takes you below the E-gates and beneath the tarmac between Concourse E and F. That’s why the walk from the E-gates to Immigration/Customs seems so long, because you are actually walking to Concourse F and the Immigration/Customs hall there.
      If you want to see the shorter walk to Immigration/Customs watch my video ua-cam.com/video/21CMcw4GZWQ/v-deo.html&feature=shares

Watch the end of my other video here : ua-cam.com/video/21CMcw4GZWQ/v-deo.html&feature=shares to see another international arrival.
      The flow is simple.... when you get off the plane the corridor leads you to customs/immigration, the exit from customs/immigration leads to international baggage claim. Get your bags and exit baggage claim through the only doors you can go out. The signs above the door will direct travelers with connecting flights to go left. When you go left you will re-check your bag with your airline and then you'll have access to the departure gates.

      @@bozy106 I think you forgot one step there. After re-checking the luggage you will have to go through TSA again before getting 'airside'.
      But, since you are a frequent ATL traveller, could you tell me if at immigration they still have the old Global Entry kiosks or the newer ones? I got fully approved just last Tuesday, so I fully intend to make use of that in June 🙂

      @@ganymedes62 the recheck through TSA is correct. Honestly, I have never paid a lot of attention to the Global Entry kiosks so I am unsure. (I don’t have Global Entry, I just wait in the long lines…)
