April 15th, 2018, R. Lee Ermey (Hartman) passed away due to complications to pneumonia. He was one of the best Marines ever in the USMC the world would ever have to offer. He will be forever missed. RIP, Gunnery Sergeant.

It is a standard cadence, you could add in what you wanted. It is the way the Drill Instructor assisted you in "brainwashing" your thinking about the service. I am sure a lot of people have never thought what makes a soldier or sailor give their lives freely for their fellow American. It starts with the pain of PT, the cadence of the instructor, and the intention to belong. UuuuuuRah!!!!!!

I always heard that this was the most realistic interpretation of military training put to film. Having joined the Air Force, I realize now that GSgt Ermey simply reproduced actual boot camp for Kubrick.

Those are formation runs, they're slow because you're practicing cover (keeping the man in front of you as 'cover', directly in front of you) and alignment (keeping the man to your right 'aligned'), and you're practicing running to the rhythm. You run in these formations pretty slowly, but you run for miles and miles and miles.
