- Ella Fitzgerald sings "Round Midnight".
Piano: Oscar Peterson
Bass: Ray Brown
Drums: Ed Thigpen
Composer: Thelonious Monk
(UK, 1961)
It begins to tell,
round midnight, midnight.
I do pretty well till after sundown.
Suppertime, I'm feeling sad;
but it really gets bad,
round midnight.
Memories always start round midnight.
Haven't got the heart
to stand those memories,
when my heart is still with you,
and old midnight knows it, too.
When a quarrel we had needs mending,
does it mean that our love is ending?
Darling, I need you, lately I find
you're out of my heart,
and I'm out of my mind.
Let our hearts take wings
round midnight, midnight.
Let the angels sing,
for your returning,
till our love is safe and sound
and old midnight comes around.
Feeling sad,
really gets bad
round midnight...

When I hear Ella sing I don't mind that I am 63 and time is flying. I was able to see her live and grew up with her music. I heard the angels sing.
lucky bastard!.....wish i could ,damn you...ha ha ha
She sounds like an angel to me too!
You have been fortunate, am I allowed to be jealous 😒.
Her voice never got old.
I envy you...
God bless the person who filmed this historic performance.
And we love all of them in heaven.....
Ohhh yes.
We are thankful for that person.
What a hidden GEM.
Look at our Jewel.
amen...
Ella really was an OG at using melisma in her vocals but the reason she did it was because she wanted to emulate the instrumentation that was used in jazz and blues at the time, namely trumpets and saxophones. It’s a real testament to her vocal agility that she’s able to exactly replicate the way a saxophone would have performed those notes if the song was being played but not sung. She was a goddess
No effects, no ridiculous costumes, no flashy dancers, just a beautiful voice and tasteful instruments. Corporate music can go strangle itself.
You forgot no electronic auto tune.
Agreed, completely agree...
Tap Ir l'art pour l'art
Yes, you are right but this falls into the category of real entertainment, when talent and skill meant something. Ella just had a simple beautiful voice!
Thank you for including that parting note. Really made this comment.
Her vocal prowess is incredulous...THIS is the kind of singer I aspire to be. Such inspiration. Love you Ella
uh...minor point. She is incredible. You would be incredulous.
Sailing BayBeeCakes Oops - I suppose what I meant to say was that I can't believe how good she is here. Thanks for the correction ;)
Jonny you are a star already with that good an ear!!!
No one could “scat” like Ella Fitzgerald, and that was a perfect last note. She was a consummate musician.
With Oscar Peterson behind her I cannot hold back my tears. And that voice. Alone in the dark with Ella Fitzgerald. Imagine that.
Yeah I was like damn I know that pianist!
It DOES NOT get any better than this. Artistic and technical perfection.
I can't imagine anyone who doesn't like this song as sung by Ella and played by the Oscar Peterson trio.
Best female voice ever, warmth, soul, perfect vibrato...on and on...
this is when you really had artistry. The voice was like an instrument. Ella, Sarah, were true vocalist and instrumentalist wow what a treat to see this thanks for posting
This is by far the best version of "round midnight" I have found on the net after looking through Hundreds. She doesn't hit the notes beautiful as she does here. You feel this in your soul. Peace youtube.
Ella sounds so much like a horn player; more than any other singer. period.
Her voice is unmatched! When I hear her sing I just close my eyes and go wherever she chooses to lead me.
Simply beautiful. And how in the world did she find that correct final note after going all over the scale?! Talent.
she actually ended it on a C (the 9th), which is a tension in this key of Bb minor. Adding a little bit of flair.
Dat part!
It seems like no one my age would ever listen to this, let alone enjoy it. I know why I'm called an old soul, and I wouldn't have it any other way :)
Every new Ella Fitzgerald song I listen to just sticks with me. Good Lord is this woman's voice impactful
I woke up to Sting's Version of this, and felt compelled to look up the song. Here I am. Oh my God, this woman is fantastic!
With tears in my eyes....the greatest pop voice of all time...of any time. God Bless this lady....
Even having listened to Ella all my life, I find this performance absolutely stunning.😪
Ella forever.......and ever and ever and ever and ever..........long after the world is gone, and beyond.
Ms. Elle, Fitzgerald, was one of " America and Harlem best vocalist ever!
her voice soothes my soul. much needed during a hectic day
I am in love... I lose myself in this atmosphere. How I would have loved to live in that era; I would trade Ipads and Android cell phones for a performance like this live any day
Like someone said about another stellar jazz performance. "If you gave this a thumbs down, you have a hole in your soul that needs to be filled."
Midnight Sun and 'round Midnight and Lazy Afternoon were the first piano pieces my mother bought with her babysitting money!!!She was 12. She adored Mr Peterson too!!!!Thank you Mom, you started me off very well!!!
Its also nice to see Oscar Peterson allowing space for Ella to operate. Undoubtably one of the greatest Jazz pianists that ever lived, but not always the most sensitive accompanist. This performance was a master class by the whole esemble.
Don't forget Thelonious Monk;for it is his composition. What a splendid rendition nevertheless and a compliment. R.I.P. all of 'em. Ella,Monk, and Peterson.
This is great! Really outstanding, always she is,sweet Ella..I'm tired of people comparing Michael Bubbles to great singers like Ella,Dinah,Billie and all the greats..
What a brilliant voice, miss you Ella!!! Always my first lady of jazz! x
The dictionary has not the right words to describe how deftly Ella caresses the notes. Kudos to the musicians too. They don't make such stuff anymore. This is exactly why Ella is my idol.
Ella AND Oscar Peterson? Now this is a treat.
Simply stunning, hic !
Each can be great but all must recognize that Amy is at the beginning of her career arc as a singer. Ella was the mistress of song for decades and finished strong. This track alone shows she was the best that ever was.
Wow. This is my first time ever hearing an Ella Fitzgerald song or ever hearing her sing. Such a beautiful voice it brought tears to my eyes. I know this song from Amy Winehouse and just discovered this Video. Thank you for sharing this Classic time capsule.
She sings with such pathos. Just beautiful.
Still one of my favolite singers and I'm 89 years old - also love boogie woogie and Michel Petrucciani who plays Round Midnight the way I feel it...
There is no Hate.... Just Facts!!!! Ella is GREATNESS!!!!. But to each their own.... even if its some imitation or failed attempt. Just listen to that Voice... WOW!!!! thank you for posting
amazing Lord Jesus
Effortlessly; Graceful; Classy; Poignantly; Captivating; Timeless... First Lady of Song, Ella Fitzgerald.
And she did all that with NO autotune! Amazing.....pure talent.
and she does not dress like a stripper to get noticed by the audience
Auto what?
@@giorgigeorgekandelaky-nude6044 AUTOTUNE. Get it?
It's funny that the original composer of this song Thelonius Monk was famous for his discordant piano playing and songs.
@@santanapendleton9955 So true. This song is definitely an aberration in his opus. And what an aberration!
Perfect example of a vocalist, it's not just about having a beautiful instrument but you need to be creative and musical with that instrument as well. Ella nailed all of that with apparent ease.
Gives me chills every time I hear Ella sing this.
Wowow amazing, Ive heard Amy Winehouse Version a million times, but never this one. How lovely!
Issasol Amy Winehouse did a modern version of this classic jazz song.
that ending was gorgeous!
Ella is worth her weight in gold! She is just blessed to have had this beautiful voice. Beautiful!
wished that I'm a time traveller, that i would listen to her with a cup of bitter tea..
Yes.
Cause she would be the sweet.
🙂
Hate, I never saw her in concert- as many I never invested to see them in live concert...now in this Covid-19 Pandemic.
Look at the state of that! Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson!!!! Ray Brown, Ed Thigpen by the great Thelonious Monk! ah how I love Jazz!
just beautiful Ella was my main influence when I started singing!
Heard her in the '80s at the Hollywood Bowl in L.A. Packed and thousands in the open-air venue, yet her magic was such that, with all those people, she was singing to ME.
I've commented on this video in the past, it never gets old, ella is and will always be one of the best
agree...
la piu' bella versione cantata di ogni tempo, anche per il futuro.
grazie Ella.
Beautiful song ♥️🎹
The goddess of jazz...
better singer than 99.999% of today's top female hits
Damn, Ella could just plain sing.
An angel.
Music is universal, no matter what, but unfortunatly, I believe we've lost the true escense of music. It's important to understand the lyrics, not just the melody.

Wow. Slow Jazz romance so good it hurts my soul in a good way. ♪
You just can't convey feeling like this without a deep understanding of love and people.
I mean...she just SENDS ME! Once in a lifetime treasure. Once in a lifetime collaboration.
utterly impossible to resist!!!!!!! this is music..
Thelonious Monk's immortal _'Round Midnight._ Today, October 10th, 2020, is his *103rd* birthday. www.npr.org/2017/10/10/556842176/after-midnight-thelonious-monk-at-100?t=1602310704328
@@henridelagardere264 thank you for these spectacular Links!!!!! you are utterly amazing my musical friend!!!!!!!
Ain't nobody could or yet can sing it like Lady Ella.
Ella's voice is like nothing I've ever heard in my life. Holy sweet Jesus I'm in love.
She was so brilliant.
Amazing!!!! She's unforgetable...
There aren''t best vocal version of round midnight than this fenomenal performance Sung by Ella Fitzgerald (the Queen of Jazz).
This has to be one of her best performances ever
im speechless, Angelic!!
I'm 15, But I can understand the emotion she displays in her voice/vocalizing. It's beautiful and is soulful.
"I'm 15, but I can understand..." Since when does age have anything to do with, well ANYTHING? It can not be an argument for liking something... "I'm 15 but I STILL DESPITE ME BEING 15 I LIKE THIS" fuck off you twatty snowflake
Stfu and enjoy the music. All of you
watching her it's almost impossible to think she is singing that and creating that beautiful beautiful sound .... she looks so relaxed. My favouritest singer ever. She really gets to my soul and makes it joyful. Beautiful woman.
how can anybody be so good?? she may be gone but she stll destroys me!
very few vocalists would dare to sing this song. Only Ella and Oscar could create the mood here its one off . The line up here is awsome this is a Monk tune if I remember? again thamks for showing it .
Essa interpretação deve ser inserida nas escolas de música como obrigatória, tanto por Ella como por Oscar Peterson...Divinos!!!!!
No one does it better!!!
she does it SO effortlessly. amazing.
"Some kids in Italy call me 'Mama Jazz; I thought that was so cute. As long as they don't call me 'Grandma Jazz." She truly is the mother of jazz!
Beautiful phrasing...she's laid back and so cool, but you never lose sense of the song's feeling. Ella's pretty much universally respected in the jazz world, idolized by vocalists and instrumentalists alike.
I saw all our legends in person..live!!...Oscar Petersen ,Miles Davis, Ella, Sarah, Dizzy.,Bill Evans,Carmen McCrae,..I miss them so much!!...I hate today's music..
Ledisi's version of this song is awe inspiring man! Let the angels sing and show their magic!! They're not witches
I love that her eyes is closed the whole time, she really feels it.
wonderful performance!
I am just speechless...
Who in their right mind would dislike this? Oh, wait....I just answered that question. They AREN'T in their right mind.
I don't think you can teach natural phrasing, she is just born with an unmatchable talent
I haven't heard the vocal version of this song many times, but this is the best version. Ella, with her great voice and sense of timing could make any song sound great. Thanks for posting this.
Jazmine sullivan remade this song. Pretty great
Just masterful!!!!
perfect intonation... so good...
I heard many people do this song, but no one does it better than the Queen Ella
Tim Harris I agree, I wonder if lady day ever performed this !!!
Her voice cannot be improved upon. It's everything I want in a jazz song!
perhaps the greatest bebop composition interpreted by a legend in her own time...
THANK YOU ELLA.
Simplicity
...is the hardest commodity to obtain in this overblown, over embellished, over gospel influenced culture of self aggrandizement.
Take note of how it's done!
Superb voice
I love Ella so much, thanks for existing angel
I'm starting to study jazz standards... sounds like i'm at the right place. God, what a tremendous feeling in this voice... I knew Fitzgerald was an angel, but I was far from the truth ^^
Our middle school band played this for their ballad and I can't tell you how glad I am to have stumbled upon the real lyrical Round Midnight. It's such a refresher from the secular and distasteful music my generation is surrounded by day in and day out. This is gorgeous and such a relief from the trash music surrounding me on all sides.
I love the way Ella sang this masterpiece.
No one was ever like Miss Ella and no one ever will be. Just the very best of the best. I could listen to her 24/7 and never be bored because she was so amazingly versatile with fabulous musicianship. Her voice was a true instrument. So glad we have these performances immortalized and available to the world.
What A Rare Classic !
Ella Fitzgerald Was The Greatest !
A National Treasure !
that was the greatest voice that ever lived God how I miss her
