    Every time whenever I hear this song at 3:32 I remember my father’s heart skipping a beat. He loved Dire Straits and Mark and his musicians. In loving memory; thanks dad. Thanks for this wonderful memory.

      To me, this song listens as an ode to the people in motorsport, the travelling circus from track to track.. and then they finally arrive at Nazareth and the race weekend will start, then the solo, the race builds up all the way to a climax and especially live, the finish flag drops and the music stops (suddenly). Love it !! ❤

    The solo in this song is supposed to represent the actual race at the Speedway at Nazareth, that's why the three quick slides down the neck at the end of each of the three parts - three laps, and the car crossing the line three times. Jackie Stewart said playing the guitar was like racing - you try and negotiate the best way through the song, and you have to improvise with the changes of the music or the small mistakes or unexpected turns. This is literally Mark embodying that comparison.

      @@royalcrown9502 Jackie meant it less literally, and he was talking about George Harrison, but it's still a great quote.

    Lyrics:
    After two thousand came two thousand and one
    To be the new champions we were there for to run
    From springtime in Arizona till the fall in Monterey
    And the raceways were the battlefields and we fought 'em all the way
    Was at Phoenix in the morning I had a wake-up call
    She went around without a warning put me in the wall
    I drove Long Beach, California with three cracked vertebrae
    And we went on to Indianapolis, Indiana in May
    Well the Brickyard's there to crucify anyone who will not learn
    I climbed a mountain to qualify I went flat through the turns
    But I was down in the might-have-beens and an old pal good as died
    And I sat down in Gasoline Alley and I cried
    Well we were in at the kill again on the Milwaukee Mile
    And in June up in Michigan we were robbed at Belle Isle
    Then it was on to Portland, Oregon for the G.I. Joe
    And I'd blown off almost everyone when my motor let go
    New England, Ontario we died in the dirt
    Those walls from mid-Ohio to Toronto they hurt
    So we came to Road America where we burned up at the lake
    But at the speedway at Nazareth I made no mistake

    Hate to labour the point but the dynamic between Mark and Danny is awesome. It simply isn’t happening with Ian Thomas.

    • @nickzivs
      @nickzivs 4 роки тому +3

      It's true, Ian Thomas is a world class drummer but it's hard to top Danny's electricity and complimentary style. The man is a machine, a breathing metronome. Saw them live last weekend and Ian was good but it's certainly not the same. I figured Danny just didn't have the energy anymore but maybe that's not the case. He was sensational playing percussion accompaniment but it would have been even better to see him on the drums.
      On another note, MK is such a legend. It was a dream come true finally getting to see him live. What a class act. Oh and Glenn Worf is unbelievable.

    • @TSK-py2vy
      @TSK-py2vy 4 роки тому +2

      @@nickzivs So pleased you got to see the great man himself. I suspect this will be his last world tour. Just a gut feeling. As for Danny, well, it's rumoured Glenn Worf played some part in his downfall. That's incredibly sad if true. Glenn is a sublime bass player but Dudley Philips was also a great accompaniment to MK's style. Anyway, here's a link to a bit about why Danny left www.amarkintime.org/forum/index.php?topic=3879.15

    • @nickzivs
      @nickzivs 4 роки тому +1

      @@TSK-py2vy Me too. Saw it with my father (it was his birthday present) and it was one of the most emotional concerts I've ever been to. We're both MK fanatics (honestly my favourite musician of all time) and his music has brought us closer together over the years. Does feel like his last tour. I hope not but with his flirting with retirement with the audience at every show it certainly feels that way.
      That's unfortunate. I did find Ian's style far more technical and sophisticated but lacked that raw grit and emotion you get out of a performance like this from Danny. Ian is just a bit too flashy for me and IMHO MK isn't an incredibly flashy guitarist or lyricists/vocalist for that matter but rather witty so him and Danny's styles gelled well. Either way it was a real treat to finally get to see him.

    • @TSK-py2vy
      @TSK-py2vy 4 роки тому

      @@nickzivs Yeah, MK seems to have got a bit carried away with 'best drummer/bassist/musician in the world' tag, which he seems to recite at every concert regarding the band. From what I gather, Glenn Worf didn't care for Danny's style. TBH, Glenn's great but MK doesn't need someone that technically brilliant. Illsley would have sufficed. I'd rather have an average musician in my band than a maestro with a bad attitude. I've not warmed to Worf or Thomas but you'd probably already gathered that! So pleased you got to see Mark with your Dad. That's great. My Dad's still alive but has never really been into music. Sad, really. Anyway, let's hope for another tour - even a low-key one :)

    • @nimeshsompura

      @@TSK-py2vy agree. Danny is far more better than Ian. He is a humble guy too. Never got to see him in person. Though he has replied many times on Facebook.
      However, I also think Glenn is a fantastic bassist. And he also seems like a great human.
