Ma Long is incredible. In all the time of Ma Longs injury not once did I think he could come back and immediatly win against players like XX and LGY, but he did. This time it wasnt enough, but he wasnt far away to win. I'm just happy that my favorite player is back and is still amazing. WTTC will be interesting I didnt think there was a chance for ML to win it, but there certainly is.
The only way for wttc to be interesting is if Harimoto or any other player not representing China will win, but we all know that's not going to happen, so instead we'll to watch the usual boring chinese vs chinese final.. How exciting..

What a well deserved win by Fan Zhendong. Both players displayed great athleticism and change in tactics. I was super impressed by Ma Long's backhand recovery shots moving from wing to wing as well as his variation in service. Fan's style perfectly blended power and thoughtful placement. Ma Long, coming off a long hiatus still performed super well, and had he taken the second set, the outcome may have been different. However, kudos to Fan for having mental resilience and focus, always catching up and staying tight in the game. I see a definite growth in maturity, and this coming WTTC should be quite an interesting one, should we see Fan and Ma meet in the final. Table tennis is a beautiful sport, especially when practiced by people of such high talent! Wishing the best to both these players and this wonderful sport.

I agree, although I wanted Xu Xin to win it, but Fan is just fine and he is playing very well. Harimoto will have his chances in the next Olympics and might win many competitions in between if he stops yelling! lol

sleepysloth no, both players served that ball intending to attack the next one, baiting the opponent to attack is way to risky considering both of their extremely powerful forehands.

2 years later (3:4 @2017), FZD finally turned the score around, well deserved. There is very LITTLE between them, both being so familiar with each other's tactic/style of play. All depends on the actual performance/execution/fitness of the day. Wonderful match and many thanks for the upload.

All top tennis table players look similar to me, unlike in tennis where I find it easy to find talented players. And my own levels in both sports are similar, I am probably better in tennis table if I had to pick one. Wonder how to increase my senses as a watcher of table tennis
@@taopaille-paille4992 You probably do not understand the subtleties of the sport. All forehand topspin look similar superficially. But there exist differences between the play of every player.
It's actually more like Djokovic Vs Nadal since Fan Zhendong plays a backhand oriented game while Ma Long tries to dictate with his forehand.

ML was a WALL on match point, FZD HAD to get it by his own aggression of hitting a faultless winning shot and he DID. Big props.
WTTC will be epic.

You know it's a good game when it's ML vs FZD.
A great result for FZD, and there were two things that might suggest a switch in the balance of power between him and ML. ML's lateral movement to cover his wide forehand is not what it used to be. Fan burned him many times with a straight backhand (including the winning point). Also, Fan's tactics have become less one-dimensional. He wasn't trying to hit every ball as hard as possible - I'd say his big weakness (against ML) up to now. He made several controlled, spinny or blocking winners. Seems like the penny has finally dropped. First time I've ever had the impression his game plan was more subtle than ML. Against all this: it was very close; ML built a healthy lead in most of the sets. Also, I'm in awe of the level he's achieved so soon after his injury layoff. He now has an extra incentive to defend his crown in Budapest. Still too early to say 'the king is dead, long live the king'. Just adds more irresistible spice to the World Championship.
It's almost like ML was testing to see if FZD dared to attack his open forehand side, but FZD has been working hard these years, and now he does dare to attack, and succeeds in many of those attacks. ML is so used to doing the back hand exchange pin down, leading to finishing points with step around forehand. But now, as you pointed out, maybe he's not as quick laterally as he use to be, and maybe others are getting faster and daring to push the envelope. I think there was some event a while back when ML lost in exactly the same way, his forehand side was entirely open and vulnerable, to any who dared to attack.
FZD is getting smarter not just stronger, nice analysis.

Great match！I think Ma long improved his backhand by which he got quite number of points against fzd's back hand. Fzd play improved. The main thing is he played smarter , not just won the game by Power, by force.

An absolute delight to watch the legend and the one in the making. I think Fan was a little more composed this time and it's so good to see pure table tennis without the awful screams from Harimoto and the nasty smiles from Mima Ito.

FZD's backhand flick is so powerful and versatile. It is hard to predict where the ball will go.

@@x0cx102 harimoto is young, niwa is patient. In a couple years harimoto will prevail and niwa will lose
if Japan really has the gut to send a kid with no previous Olympic experience to Men's single, then I'd be really impressed. In 2016 ZJK was really not in the best shape but China still chose him instead of Fan Zhendong, because the atmosphere in Olympic is a totally different thing.

What a level of game, bring anyone from any era, both of these guys will eat them and spit them out. That is their level compared to anyone else in the past.
OMG .. it could be match in 2019 .. FZD eventually beat ML in major events .. if both players keep this high standard, we can expect they will play together in WTTC final and Tokyo Olympic Final .. It will always be my dream FINAL
Interestingly the two Chinese commentators in live broadcast predict at the half of 2nd set that Fan doesn't stand much chance cause he's stubbornly bombing Ma's BH without any change in tactics that's why he lost 1-13 for all the previous confrontation against Ma...however he managed to change and beat his biggest enemy. As for Captain Long he has all my credits, a glorious return from a long absence.

what a sexy match between the two most powerful attackers of all time. Love how Ma Long is always looking to utilize his forehand even off of oppenent's serves. Same with Fan, but when Fan is on, it seems like he is a little bit quicker to reaching balls on his forehand side than Ma. That diagonal behind and to the side view like at 10:48 is sexy too. They should use it more, especially for replays of the best rallies. You can really see the players technique and speed of the game from a totally different perspective. Looks awesome.
