VA Highland Haven / Cumberland Gap - RV Living

- Virginia is full of surprises and a whole lot of fun!! We visit our first ever Airstream only park which gets us thinking about the future and how something like this might be a viable option for us one day when we're ready to slow down a little and have a home base. It doesn't hurt that the funky little town of Floyd is right down the road, where every Friday night the bluegrass musicians fill the street with music and old hippies and country folks join together for an evening of wholesome fun. Before being tempted to buy a lot and a banjo and put down roots, we move on. The weather keeps us from stopping for a bike ride on the Virginia Creeper Trail, but we continue on to the Cumberland Gap. We enjoy exploring the best natural passageway through the Appalachian Mountains for hundreds of miles, walking the same trail as Daniel Boone did over 250 years ago. This concludes our time in Virginia, which leaves us a little sad because we've enjoyed this state immensely, but we're excited about a new adventure. Kentucky, here we come!!

Loved the background Bluegrass music
We follow around 100 RV UA-camrs and watch videos daily and you two are by far my favorites. My hubby and I just listed our home/property for sale and our plan is to fulltime and follow the sunshine as soon as the house sells. Love your attitudes and love how you both can finish each other's sentences. We will be traveling with three Shichon puppies.
Thank you so much, what an amazing compliment 😀 . Congats and best wishes on the house sale and starting your full time adventure, very exciting. We couldn't imagine living this life without the pups, they add so much to our experience. Thanks again for following along and commenting. Safe travels and hope to see you down the road.
3rd of your videos I watched tonight. Like the history aspect you work in on them of the cumberland gap and the tri-state area. This is a top channel for during this pandemic as we feel a bit cooped up. I would prescribe this channel to all of America.
love your video thank you be safe on travel bless you both
We really appreciate the kind words and wishes. Thank you, James!
Great. One Guys. Happy time Happy places this Great Country has to offer thanks for sharing you wonderful times
Thank you. So many great places in this country. Awesome van in your avatar! 👍
Cumberland Falls in Kentucky is a must stop. Awesome hiking and the waterfall is awesome!
Unfortunately, we won't be able to make it to Cumberland Falls this trip, but it's defiantly on the list for next time. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Informative video...I have been to Floyd several times on Friday night. It is a special place. I never thought I would like bluegrass music but hearing it live is awesome. One thing I like about it is the people of bluegrass are a lot like me and I feel good among them. Enjoy your journey.
We honestly were not huge Bluegrass fans but, we are now! We had so much fun in Floyd on Friday night, great small town, great people. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hope you come back to KY and see Cumberland falls state park see the falls . See the Ark in Williamstown. See natural bridge and Royal gorge near Stanton. Mammoth Cave NP. And the Corvette museum in Bowling Green. To include the sink hole that happened underneath it. Louisville Slugger Museum. Churchill Downs. Home of the Ky Derby. Lincoln's birthplace/boyhood home. Pres. Zachary Taylor boyhood home. Lots to see in Ky.
Great video BriJay! Lots of history along that route. Very cool!
Love love love!! Beautiful area! So green!! 💕
Thanks guys! This was a really cool and beautiful area.
Wow 1982! You make me feel old. LOL I was born in 1966. Your still a youngin. Great video
Viginia Creeper Trail is not to be missed ---Appalachian Trail also is here --- I live 14 miles away in TN-- Please come again!!
We will most definitely be back! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing this adventure. you gus explain things real well. thanks again..
Thank you for the kind words and for following along.
Man we are staying at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park until Sunday. Open Range Fifth wheel. Close but.... Another great video 😎
You all are growing, glad to see it. I love how you go into the history of the places you travel to. Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much. We love that we are constantly reminded and learning about the history of this great country. Thanks for following along.
Great adventure. Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work.
Thank you Rick for following along and commenting.
The Blue Ridge section south of Roanoke is one of my favorite sections. I bought a motorcycle in NJ and rode down the Skyline and Blue Ridge on my detoured long way back to Florida. I've toured the US by motorcycle, thinking doing with an RV someday.
The Blue Ridge is absolutely beautiful! When I (Tj) graduated from high school my plan was to travel the US on a motorcycle, but life got in the way, huge regret. We are trying to make up for it now. 😉
Embracing Detours - High school sweethearts!
Loved the video! We were just at Virginia Highland Haven from May 12 - 14. In fact, judging from the sweet deck that your neighbor had we were at the same site. Sadly, we were not there for the Bluegrass in Floyd but we did manage to visit a nice winery down the road. This was our second Airstream park as we stayed at Land Yacht Harbor in Melbourne, FL earlier in our trip. It was also very nice.
Thank you. We had a great time at Highland Haven. We'll have to put Land Yacht on our list for when we're back in Florida. Thanks for watching and safe travels.
Great video very informative. Safe travels.
Thanks for the video. It brings back memories from when I lived near Roanoke. One of my favorite campgrounds is near Floyd at the Rocky Knob Campground, on the Blue Ridge Parkway, just 10 miles or so from there. Just south on the parkway from there is the must see Mabry Mill. I love your videos and comments. Very informative and fun.
Virginia has been a great destination for us, beautiful state and friendly people. Floyd was a total surprise for us, never thought we would have had such a great time in such a small town! some of the locals had mentioned Mabry Mill, but we just didn't make it there, but we'll add it to the list for our next pass through. Thank you for the kind words and for following along.
We stayed at Highland Haven a couple of years ago - sunsets were amazing.
Highland Haven was a great stop for us. Great trails, a waterfall and fantastic sunsets. Thanks for watching and safe travels.
We visited Cumberland gap to attend Delfest. If you guys like Bluegrass, schedule your next visit to coincide with the Delfest music festival. It was awesome!
Delfest looks like a great time. We didn't realize what Bluegrass fans we were until just recently. We always enjoy listening to talented musicians.
Too bad you missed my favorite place--the Virginia Creeper Trail. Just did my first 10-day test run in my new RV (22' Sonic TT). and Damascus is to be my first out-of-state getaway. Where would you choose to stay there? Thanks for this video and tips. Cheers from Indiana.
We were sad to miss it. Congrats on the new RV! We've never camped in Damascus but friends have told us Beartree is one of their favorite places to camp so long as you're ok with dry camping. Hope that helps, you're most welcome, thank you for watching and commenting!
I’m so impressed with your videos, you’ve really developed a great style, your videography is top notch, and your extras (those dogs and cats) really know how to play your part! Great information too, I want to go everywhere you’ve been!
Very good. We stayed at Highland Haven a few weeks ago. Great place to clear your head for a few days.
Highland Haven is defiantly a good place to relax and clear your head. Thank you for following along and safe travels.
Good episode y'all! You guys weren't very far down the road from me. I hope you take a bit of the mountain along with you. Come back anytime!
Thank you. We love being in the mountains! So beautiful.
Great vlog. Looks like a lot of fun.
Thank you, Virginia is a beautiful state. We had a great time.
Thanks for another great vidéo 😉 your vidéos are getting better and better.i love your pets.big kisses from France 😘😘😘
You are “Rockstars” and we enjoy your travels and vlog! We are curious about when/where you met and your previous life’s before full-time RV. You both seem so meant for each other. Sorry you missed the Virginia Creeper trailer. Take your bikes up with one of the services and a great (and easy) ride back down. We last rode it in the rain. We got so muddy we had to buy clothing to make our dinner reservations in Boone, NC. Travel on! We love ya!
Thank you!! We need to do a video on this... I (TJ) worked with Bri's mom and she was the one that introduced us, that was seventeen years ago this month! Our lives before full-time RVing were pretty mundane; I worked for a large outdoor advertising & display company and Bri was in various forms of sales. We seemed to only work and sleep with the occasional week here and there for getaways. One day we decided we wanted more out of life which led us to full time RVing and we haven't looked back. We were really disappointed to miss the Virginia Creeper Trail but, we will absolutely be back at some point. Thank you for the kind words and for following along on our adventure.
I just discovered your youtube channel. Your videos are very interesting. Thanks for sharing your travels!
Thank you for watching and commenting. 😊
You missed a great time not going to the Creeper Trail. Go to the top of Whitetop mountain and coast 17 miles down the mountain on an old train track trail to Damascus. Best thing to do in that area. Go during Trail Days in Damascus it is a hiking town Appalachian Trail goes through it. Leave Damascus on 105 to Shady Valley TN and go through Devils Backbone (Tunnel) and hit 421 to Bristol. Shady Valley is the best kept secret in TN and has one restaurant and one country store with rocking chairs on the porch. Maybe next time.
So nice.good times there guys.
GREAT times! 😊 Thanks so much for following along.
You guys are getting close to us in Louisville, Ky. Give us a shout out if you find your way up this way. You will love Mammoth Cave. Love the videos and we begin our full time life in August. Safe travels!
Loved it, partly because you did a great job and partly ‘cause you were practically in my backyard. I go to the Grayson Highlands often. You really did miss something by not being able to cruise the Creeper Trail by bike down White Top mountain to Damascus. There is camping available in many different spots in that area as well as shuttle services out of Damascus that will drop you at the top for your cruise. Be safe!
Thank you so much. We will definitely be back to do the Creeper Trail.
Love your vlogs and your awesome personalities. Great content! I'm saving your videos for future travels.
Thank you for the kind words. We are so glad you're enjoying and thank you for commenting. Safe travels.
Yet another great video guys! Now Alli and I wanna try and get there this summer break. Gonna see if we can make it happen!
Thank you, Chuck. Very cool area and a great campground. Safe travels, guys and have fun!
Just discovered your channel. Love it! Really admire your lifestyle. Can’t wait to travel more in our Airstream, but the last child starting university and hubby far off from retirement sadly. Enjoy how your vlogs are very informative about your travels. Can you maybe add how you organize inside your AS, strategies for grocery shopping and meal preps or just daily living tactics in an AS especially with pets? Happy travels! 4riveteers
Thank you for the kind words and for following along. These are all great ideas for future videos! Safe travels.
It is worth visiting a number of the Airstream parks. Each is different and there are different ownership structures. We've been to Highland Haven, Top of Georgia, TCPC, Land Yacht Harbor in Melbourne as well as the former Airstream parks Holiday Park Campground in Traverse City, Michigan and Palmetto Cove in Cleveland South Carolina. All were welcoming and enjoyable destinations.
We've heard of only a few of those, didn't realize there was so many. We're headed towards Traverse City soon and we'll have to look up Holiday Park. Thanks for following along and commenting.
@@EmbracingDetours Check the Airstream Parks Facebook Page. Click on the "Files" tab. There is a PDF with every Airstream Park listed. Plus another with current and former Airstream parks. Lots of great places to visit.
Where do you plan to fo for winters? What do your kids (if any) think about your new lifestyle?
Last year we went back to Florida, this year we are planning on wintering somewhere in the Southwest. We don't have any kids other than the fur babies and they love it. 😊
Sunsets on Whitetop mountain in VA are like nothing I have ever seen and you can drive up to the top.
One of the highest mtn. In VA and the Creeper Trail starts there.
Really enjoyed the blog ,
Thank you so much for following along.😊
I have enjoyed this video
Thank you for watching.😊
Are those trails bike friendly or just for hiking? You guys put out the best videos by far. Thanks for taking us along.
As far as we know they were hiking only trails. Thak you so much for the compliment and for following along.
Sorry you missed Damascus and Abingdon, really cool area. If you make it back check out Wolf Hills Brewery in Abingdon. Damascus not only has the Creeper but you the AT is there and you can meet some of the through hikers who come into town for food and supplies. Where you headed in Ohio? That is where we live and may have suggestions for you.
Wish we hadn't been rained out of that area. TJ has hiked some of the AT and has always had Damascus on his list, especially for the trail days event. We will be back! Thanks for following along and commenting.
Beautiful area! Noticed you have a Pro Pride hitch, nice choice I have one too.
Loved this area! The Pro-Pride hitch may be the best money we've spent on our trailer yet. Thanks for watching. Safe travels.
To bad you missed the creeper trail, it a nice trail especially when you get off Abingdon. I ride bikes and walk it many days out of the year.
We we're so disappointed to miss the creeper trail, it's been on our wish list for a while. We will defiantly be back. Thanks for following along and commenting.
Loved this video! I just subscribed...thought I already had subscribed. Lol I just taught about the Cumberland gap, Daniel Boone’s wilderness road. Chuck and I would love to visit this campground!
Thanks Ali, This was a beautiful area with tons of history. I think you guys would love it!
Floyd VA is not far from Galax VA where they have the Old Fiddler Contest every August (oldfiddlersconvention.com/default.htm). We went to it back in 1970 and it was the first place where the moonshine was flowing everywhere because at the time it was a dry county. It was a lot of fun and heard music they only play in the old back woods of Virginia.
Cool video
Visit LBL. Land between the lakes in western KY, the Only inland peninsula in North America.
Great video.
Love the Bluegrass music.
Please let us read the signs. 2 seconds each should due.
Thanks
We are loving it too. We will try to allow more time on the signs in future videos. Thanks for watching and commenting.😊
Have you ever heard of TORCH LAKE in Michigan. Google it you should make it there in the near future. I haven't been there but plan on to this year to jet ski....I don't care if I have to go there by myself
Have been there, it is amazing. Totally clear water, you can see 6 to 10 ft into the water.
We are actually headed to Michigan tomorrow and it looks like Torch Lake is on our projected route. Thanks for the tip and for watching and commenting.
@@EmbracingDetours you are so welcome...I am a Wisconsin native now in Illinois if you have any questions about that state let me know I would hopefully be able to give you some good advice.
Hey you forgot to plug Floyd Fest. If your into music and camping, google Floyd Fest. You will have a great time. If you book early in the year it is less expensive.
Sorry about that, we hadn't heard of Floyd FEST but after a quick google search, it sounds like a great time. Here's a link to anyone interested. floydfest.com/
Thanks for the tip and for following along.
You need to come to West By God Virginia
Ok, I just had to look up "West By God Virginia" to figure out what in the world you were talking about... Love it!! 😆We look forward to visiting WV one day soon, we were sad to skip it this trip around. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
You came right past us
You folks cover so much ground. You should take up geocaching!
Tj, loves geocaching, but we haven't done it since hitting the road. Thanks for reminding us about it and thanks so much for following along and commenting.
Still enjoying your adventures .I have been to cumberland gap but not camping.I hope to go back and camp out soon even in this cold weather..Please look at my youtube videos Tennessee adventure man.
Spat?
Dude, loosen up man, you're too tight.
An Airstream only campground, that's great !! Keeps all the snobs in the same place ! That is really great !
