  • Poor planning on our part leaves us with several weeks to fill, so we take our viewer's suggestions (thank you!) and point the van and Airstream to Chincoteague, VA and Assateague, MD. We utilize our Harvest Host membership and take advantage of some free camping in Virginia at the Blue Crab Bay Co. This location allows us to quickly get to Chincoteague where we explore the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and learn all about the island's WILD PONIES!!! From there, we head into Maryland and stay at the Assateague Island National Seashore Campground, where the ponies (not to be outdone by the Chincoteague ponies) are extra helpful in assisting us to set up camp. Pristine beach beckons but our thin Florida blood lets us down once again.

    There are lots of mosquitoes in the summer. We camped at Cherrystone Family Camping Resort almost 10 years ago. I read about it as a child in Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry. We had a great time. Got to go crabbing off the pier.

    If you go to assateague in the summer months the greenflies and mosquitos will eat you alive so in reality you went there at the best time.thats when we go there ...early and late in the season to avoid the bugs....

      Well, that's good to know, thank you! There is nothing more annoying than flies, noseeums, mosquitos... take your pick of obnoxious biting flying insect. God forbid you leave the tent unzipped or screen door open and they get inside to bother you all night 🙄Glad we avoided that, even if it was unintentionally! Thanks for watching and commenting 👍

    Hi!
    We are headed to NC and the Outter Banks the end of April. Looks like fun! I'm wondering about bugs that time if year. I know you were there in March. Did you hear anything about a "bug season"? We would bring a screen tent if so.

    Last time I was in Assateague the horses got real annoying real fast with the constant begging. They were real pushy when trying to cook food outside for every meal. Ferries are all free up and down the outer banks though.

    • @EmbracingDetours
      @EmbracingDetours  5 років тому

      I've heard and read many stories about the opportunistic pony thieves. They were definitely inquisitive and not at all afraid of people, cars, really anything, but they only came around our camp the once when we were setting up. That said, we didn't do any cooking outside so I'm sure that makes a difference. Thanks for the OBX tip, Jack, and thanks for watching and commenting!

    did you stay at the National park? if so they do not have hot showers the Maryland state park is more expensive but they do have hot showers, funny they even advertise that they have hot showers and the national park doesn't on their website. I paid $45 or $50 at MD Assateague state park last April and you got lucky the horses ventured into your campsite I didn't see a one in the camping area only at the park entrance.

    The litter might be from the wild horses. Seriously. They raid campsites for food at night, and may have dragged people's stuff away. (Obviously campers are responsible for not having their gear secure.)

    Great video guys. Chincoteague is pronounced with an sh sound (as in "she"), instead of a hard ch sound. Not an uncommon mistake. Thanks.

    I’ve camped Assateague National Seashore at site #7 twice this winter with my new truck camper. In Jan. I was the only person there. Sadly the ponies are dying at an alarming rate. Link to article describing “Swamp Cancer”

      Congrats on the new truck camper! I can understand why you keep going back, Assateague is AMAZING! I am devastated to learn about the ponies dying from swamp cancer, how horrible 😢 That is the difficulty in managing a wild herd, finding the infection before it's too late is much more difficult when they have 4k acres to roam. I hope we're able to somehow figure out how to either treat it or prevent it all together for these ponies.

      The national park has bigger sites , more space. my husband brings along his sail boat and stays on the bay side doing his thing with our dog, while we beach lizards go to the beach. We always go when its warm so the cool showers don't bother us. I agree Assateague is beautiful in its way. A totally different experience than Ocean City just 10 miles up the Road.

      I should add most years we stay in the state park. For one reason. We take extra people who are not campers. This includes teen age girls. 12 days with pit toilets and cold showers isn’t fun with noncampers. The bathhouses in the state park are really nice. Off season you still super close to OCMD to go out to eat and a ton of the restaurants are open year round including my favorite mexican restaurant in the country called Mothers.

    On The flip side, to visiting off season... u don't have to deal with traffic, mobs and crowded stores. For me, I would prep meals, and stop at local grocery stores to stock food. Egg salad tuna salad and pb w/banana sandwiches?. It takes a little extra planning. Another possibility is to call the local tourists bureaus for the areas to find out what the situation is before you get there yeah dampers the Thrill of the unknown yet you won't be surprised by the unknown either. Many beach towns do business Memorial Day to Labor Day in the mid area of United States

      So happy our video allowed you to reminisce. I can imagine the pony swim is a blast, and Chincoteague is a happening place in season. It took us a while to figure out Assateague is a mostly undeveloped island shared by VA & MD, Chincoteague is a developed town on an island just inside of Assateague on the VA side. First, it is always great to see different perspectives of an area we have visited and thoroughly enjoyed. Chincoteague is pronounced as with a Sh not a Ch... So shincoteague. The horses are on Assateague except on the round-up week, then are swum across the channel. The Chinoteague volunteer FD has permits for up to 300 ponies, and return 150 back after the auction. They WANT the herd to increase so to raise money for the auction. Part of the money is their annual fund raiser and part is used to maintain the herd... Emergency food in winter, three vet checks per year, shots, etc. None of that comes from fed money. The lighthouse is awesome and a must see. One of the few double lights in the country. Two fresnal lens lamps created a double blink. Started before civil war and restarted after civil war ended. We would love to try the dry camping up in MD, have only camped on the VA side. The shelling is awesome, too! We saw dolphins in late June.

      Figures we had Chincoteague (Shink-uh-teeg) wrong, darn! Well, now we know... thanks!! It's really interesting how the ponies are managed and cared for, and they're obviously great for tourism, they're a huge draw for the area especially during the swim. Someone in the comments here included a link about the ponies suffering from something called swamp cancer, I hope they're able to get that under control. We walked around the lighthouse, it was a beauty but we did not know about the double lights/double blink, very cool!! Thanks for all the info, and for watching and commenting 😊👍

    You guys are funny and I am reading the comments too. I guess being from the east coast I'm used to all of this. $24.00 probably was for the trailer also, and the tunnel is under the Chesapeake Bay so I would want to pay to have it maintained. haha Wow, that is disappointing always to find trash, thanks for your help along the way. Hopefully, the rest of the east coast is nicer for you. Enjoy yourselves.

      We're from FL originally where we do have a few toll roads but we have a Fastpass and probably don't notice the cost as much when it's being automatically withdrawn lol. You are correct, the fee was for towing a 2 axle trailer but going through with a regular car costs $14 to $18 (depending on if peak time or not), so it's pricey regardless. That said, I had no idea what a massive tunnel/bridge system it was and am happy to pay it to maintain it!! That said, we thoroughly enjoyed our time on the East Shore of VA and MD.

    A book read by girls at around age 16 "Misty of Chincoteague" is about the ponies. Horse population is controlled by the horse auction. I believe on the VA side it is controlled by birth control. Or vise versa.

    Next time you really need to take the ferry out to Tangier Island. It is a very old crabbing community that has a very old heritage from northern England. A lot of the soft shell crab we eat on the east comes from there. It is still a part of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Love your vids keep them coming. • @lizdc1
      @lizdc1 5 років тому +1

      I would say the bathhouses in the state park are amazing and even have secret outdoor showers at the end of each bathhouse that are designed so you can have a view of the bay while showering but no one can see you. Even seasoned campers in the state park don’t realize they are there since they are at the back end of the bathhouses.

    • @kkatmom
      @kkatmom 5 років тому +1

      lizdc1 I didn’t realize that. So the state park was first and then the national seashore? I guess I just always thought they were the same. Sorry. The other showers are only good when it’s 90 degrees!

    • @lizdc1
      @lizdc1 5 років тому +1

      Donna Earley yep when you drive if you go to the end that is the state park public beach then there is a road into the campground. The state park has about 300 sites all ocean side. The national seashore has sites on bay side and beach side and has maybe 150. On a map they are next to each other. It is why if you go to the national park you drive a bit to get to the camp site since you are really driving past the state park but you can’t see that from the road. The national park is way more rustic and has pit toilets and cold shower stalls. But some of the walk in tent sites are on the dune. The state park has fancy modern bath houses and all the sites are behind the dune.

    • @EmbracingDetours
      @EmbracingDetours  5 років тому

      Hey Donna, lizdc1 knows what she's talking about!! Assateague Island State Park definitely seems like the preferable campground as some sites have electric hookups and there are hot showers. Unfortunately, the State Park doesn't open until 4/24 which is why we ended up at Assateague Island National Seashore Campground. It was a beautiful campground and we had no complaints, but given the option, we would probably stay at the State Park next time for the amenities if no other reason. I was like a kid in a candy shop with those ponies, but I came out of the womb horse crazy so... 🦄🤩

    Don't knock the CBBT too much, it is expensive, but it cuts hours off of travel to DelMarVa. I assume you are already rolling toward DC (where I am currently suffering), but it is a shame you can't stay in that area a few days longer as there is a launch scheduled down at Wallops Island tomorrow.

    • @EmbracingDetours
      @EmbracingDetours  5 років тому +2

      Delmarva... you just introduced a new term to me! Very cool, thanks 😁 Oh once we were through the CBBT we understood, it's no ordinary tunnel! And I see it cuts about 95 miles off the drive, which when I calculate it would have cost us about the same amount in fuel as the toll. Too bad we missed the launch, that would have been cool. Our videos are usually a few weeks behind, so we missed it by quite a bit actually. Thanks so much for watching and commenting 👍😊

      We have an outdoor mat that we'll sometimes put out if our site is particularly sandy, in hopes that it catches the dirt before it makes it inside. If they're really bad, like have gone in the ocean and then rolled around in the sand, I might wash them with the outside shower. But mostly we're just resigned to have a sand-filled trailer lol

    • @EmbracingDetours

      We actually really enjoyed the tunnel, we had no idea what an engineering marvel it was until we crossed it. It's a beast!! I just looked online and for regular 2 axle/4 tire vehicles it's $14 off-peak / $18 peak, for us towing a 2 axle trailer it was $24.
      www.cbbt.com/current-toll-schedule/
      It did seem expensive but once I realized it was no ordinary tunnel I somewhat understood the cost. Thanks for watching!!
