My mom was raised in Ivanhoe in the 50s and 60s so it’s amazing to see that people still appreciate the area! As for fried pies, check out the produce stands in Cana, VA. My father in law brings them to me every time he stops in there.
Robert Sheffey did not utter the word curse., he dusted his shoes and said those things about the hole the town would fall in. I was born in a house right above McCloud's general store building. I had many a good memory there as a boy. One time we lived upstairs in an apartment above that store. The little road you turned around there is the ruins of the Ivanhoe Elementary school that burned down. You missed it because vines and nature had covered the ruins. You also missed the shaft tower that is 175 feet tall that let the men down 1100 feet down into the earth for the lead and zinc mines. You did a wonderful video and Ii thank you from the bottom of the heart. After the so-called curse, The National Carbide co came ther and many a family raised their children. Also the mines from Austinville , merged from underground and they raised many a family. You done a more dignified video. Carbide closed in late 60s.and the mines closed in early 70s due to lack of ore not from a curse. People need to get thatout of their head here or it will always have a shadow over the town. I love this place.
The curse is a lie. Phenomenal place to grow up. My dad helped lead parades in the 60s and 70s on the 4th of July. Ronald is my second cousin hey Ron. 4500 in the early 40’s when Dad grew up and 1500 in the 60s and 70s when we were raised. Boy Scout troop, great elementary school, volunteer fire department, jobs until early 80’s when Gulf and Western owned Aunstinville lead and zinc mines. Environmental wackos and technology probably made it easier to move the place. My father Earnest Clyde Shinault could have been mayor from the 60s til the 80’s. He helped start the Ivanhoe Civic League and the Jubilee park on the river near the carbide plant site at the New River Trail. There’s some run down old houses for sure but it’s been decades since Ivanhoe had the 4 or 5 country stores and Prices ces department store. Thanks for sharing and would love to see more. I’ve taught school for 40 years an hour away and coached mostly in NC near the Va border.
I live in Ivanhoe in a farmhouse built in 1900 off of Pope Road. These old houses are A LOT OF WORK to upkeep and mine has cost me a lot of money to repair and fix up and still looks pretty beat up. Of local interest: at 12:13 you passed the road that leads up to the abandoned Union Carbide plant. But I would not go up there, it's very overgrown and seems like Copperheads would be thick in there. Ivanhoe is a nice place to live and I have wonderful neighbors who do anything they can to help each other. The curse, from Sheffey or not, is that over the years industry has come and gone from this place taking with them the ability to earn a decent wage. I travel more than 45 minutes each way to work. I prefer to live way out here so I don't mind that but many years back, before modern vehicles and interstates, it was not feasible for the locals of these small towns to travel as far for work. This was their home and the locals have strong ties to this place. I do not blame them for not wanting to leave. Thanks for a making a video that shows how nice it is here. It is obviously not an affluent area and we have our problems and issues like many small rural towns do. Many videos of this area are very disparaging of the people and the places and unfairly show them in a negative light. I watched one where they made it seem like we are ALL making and using Meth (LOL). I'm sure it and most other illegal substances is around here (just like every town in America it seems) but I have never seen it or known of it. Your videos are factual but you do not present in a negative way and that is appreciated.
I memba going through here to work on gas pumps at a store in the Mountains. Also remember hearing about a man’s outhouse that fell in with him and he was trapped for days till the mailman noticed the mail piling up and no one getting it and found him !!! He lived. !! But wow thanks again guys!!
Thank you for this video. This is what my husband and I used to love to do for fun - just exploring old towns and places. He passed away in 2014 and that ended it. This was wonderful!
Really pretty area. I truly enjoy both your channels. Your chemistry can't be created. You got it or you don't. Congratulations on topping 57,000 subscriptions!🎉
Another great video love it thanks Shane and Melody for sharing the history of the cursed town you two always do a great job and look forward to y'all's next one 👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸❤️
I love the old two story farmhouses. Like you I would love to step back into time and walk into these homes and places of business and hear what they talked about and see how they dressed. You had a nice sunny day there. See you next time!
Y’all completely looked over the remains of the old Ivanhoe school where y’all turned around in the cal-de-sac or however you spell it. That would’ve been super neat to explore!
Tidbt about blue and Masonic Lodges. I come from a family that has a strong Masonic heritage, and I have picked up some interesting facts along the way. A basic Masonic lodge is known as a "blue lodge". The Blue Lodge is where the individuals receive their first three Masonry degrees. In that scenario, blue means special, sacred, wisdom, or perfection. Happy to help!
There's a great movie from 1977 called Sheffey. It's about Robert Sheffey's life. It's free to watch on UA-cam. The movie was very good and it showed all the good stuff he did for people.
This video popped up on my feed. Don't even have time to watch it, but definitely will later. If you havn't already, you guys need to do a video on Pocahontas Virginia. Be prepared to dig deep. The history is rich and very interesting. Get it from the locals. They'll put you onto the best sources. Visit the mining museum in season when it opens. Also, you'll want to learn about and visit nearby Bramwell, WV, because it has a deep history as well and is forever linked to Pocahontas for reasons that will become evident in your journey.
Wouldn't this be an interesting place to visit on Halloween? Where is Ivanhoe, VA located geographically in the state? WOW! That is really an old building. Ivanhoe is so interesting. Thanks for taking me along on this awesome adventure. Stay safe.
I live not too far from Ivanhoe and have known a few folks from there, and I must say, they've all seemed to struggle with some sort of curse or something like it.
I'm not sure a "man of God" should be cursing things. Seems a little counter productive. The area does have sort of a deep south vibe. SC or Georgia perhaps.

I once "dated" a girl from there and I can confirm she cursed me multiple times and I am still okay! Just saying, I am no expert.

I was born and raised here in Ivanhoe VA. Right on the river Rd. We actually passed you guys on the road in this video 😂 great video guys! Thank you!
Oh how awesome! Haha small world! - Melody
Shows the power of belief! The only way a curse can work is if folks believe in the curse!
Thank you Shane and Melody for another excellent video; we appreciate you!
It looks like a nice sleepy town. I’d like to live there. The homes are nice. I miss the fried pies too, not as available as before. Nice drive. ❤
Thankyou Shane and Melanie for another awesome video. Enjoy your day.
Beautiful old homes, I also would love to have seen them in their heyday ❤
Lived in Rakestown part of Ivanhoe for several years. Got plenty of paranormal experiences from there. Most of them I keep to myself.
I love the old two story farmhouses. Like you I would love to step back into time and walk into these homes and places of business and hear what they talked about and see how they dressed. You had a nice sunny day there. See you next time!

It would be cool if you were able to get some locals to agree to interviewing on camera and hear some of their stories of their towns.
You shoulda crossed over 94 and seen the new river trail

It's near Wythville.
@@Mithras444 Ah! Thanks you. My goodness, I have been to Wytheville more times than I have fingers and toes.
My great great granddad. Robert Sheffey
Yes sheffey school was named after Robert Sheffey when I went to school there in the 70s they was a picture of him in the school but probably not now
Thanks for confirming that info
Eddie do you remember the Akers store on the corner
I live not too far from Ivanhoe and have known a few folks from there, and I must say, they've all seemed to struggle with some sort of curse or something like it.
