Ok lemme ramble real quick. When I was younger, Overwatch first caught my eye while I was watching Muselk and Bazza's videos. The game seemed like a revolutionary creation, strikingly different from anything I had seen before, including Team Fortress 2. The rush of excitement that filled me upon joining my first Overwatch match on PC was unparalleled. The, the fun, the synergy - it was pure, unfiltered enjoyment. However, with each passing year, the facade began to crumble, revealing the harsh realities of Overwatch's development team. This was most prominently exposed with the release of Overwatch 2, an small update that I believe marked a low point in the franchise's history. After three long years of neglect, the decision to announce Overwatch 2's PvP mode felt like a letdown, dampening my previously high spirits. Furthermore, the announcement of Overwatch 2's PvE mode left me with more questions than answers. It cast doubt on the existence of the much-touted, expansive PvE mode that had been promised. It led me to wonder whether this was all just a ploy - an elaborate scheme to build unwarranted hype for the game, with the ultimate aim of selling as many skins as possible. In its essence, Overwatch was a game of enjoyment and fun, but recent developments have left me questioning the integrity of the developers and the future of this game.
They literally sacrificed a whole game for 3 years to make PvE possible and all of a sudden it's just "not possible to meet the expectations"??? They got millions (probably more) of dollars and the whole time in the world from their most dedicated fans and player base, then they said "we couldn't meet the expectations" and decided to ditch PvE?? Yeah, sure Blizzard
The real issue that people aren't talking about (Because frankly most don't understand) is that the entire dev team has been swapped out over the last couple years. Even being able to read and understand someone's code that you've never worked on is a massive challenge, making changes to it without breaking everything and having to start from scratch is nearly impossible when none of the original devs still work there.

Man I loved overwatch. It was my first fps, the first game I took seriously and grinded. I even found friends along the way whom Ive even got to meet irl. This game has brought me so much joy and great memories so to see it constantly worsen itself every year is truly saddening
It's very clear that when Kaplan left, they were already deadset on not releasing PvE. So they just fucking lied when they've said they were « separating PvE and PvP so we can get the PvP sooner », they just didn't wanted to say they were ditching PvE

It’s truly tragic. I sold me 3ds to buy overwatch after watching Zylbrad play genji. I begged my mom to go out and get the game, and I say I regret selling my 3ds but I don’t. It was quite arguably the greatest multiplayer experience and sense of community in 2016. The toxicity was slim, everyone was having a good time and loving it, the competitive scene was awesome and I’ve stuck with it all these years. At one point in time I could tell you every characters lore, I could tell you their height, real name, what they liked to eat, why they laughed and cried. I was so excited for a deep dive into the lore that every archives and anniversary event was so cool, the pve with a full campaign in blizzard style (as a lover of Diablo) just felt like the most anyone could ever ask for. And now it’s dead, with no replay ability, no skill tree, maybe not even any bosses. It’ll be 30 minutes if content every 2-3 months. Scraps. Nothing.
Seeing as how, right before the announcement they were talking about Starwatch taking several months to complete I was already thinking yikes how long will pve take? Starwatch wasnt even anything special.

what flats said is true, if they wanted to tell a story they should have made a netflix show, this whole PvE thing was never gonna work, i mean it would be a completelly new game, doing that while keeping OW alive was not possible without some serious financial and manpower both of which activision would not want to waste on blizzard... it's very sad, i like many others that still love this game started on the open beta and at the start it was a competive game, everyone wanted to be the best, everyone was awaiting for the comp mode and now i feel like they just negleted every level of player, the casuals dont want to play a game where you need a entire year just to have enough currency just to buy a skin, and veterans have been calling comp a joke for some time now. I dont know if OW2 can stay for long but i honestly hope that they realize that they need to do something, they need to stop failling to meet spectation, they need to focus on making OW a competive game again and they need to stop with the exploratory business practices. Jeff made the decision to pause the support for ow1 to work on PvE, even though he, as VP of Blizzard, and OW’s lead, had to have known the time and money to do so was an insane expectation. PvE and PvP together was an insane pipe dream. Jeff should have known this, but he made the decision to push forward, leaving ow1 in limbo for years. Jared and Aaron didn’t destroy ow2’s PvE, it was never going to exist. They were just honest about it
I believe that Jeff has made a great decision trying to make OW PVE, it was a very ambitious project and if BlizzCon streams and footage is anything to go by - they seemed to have a very solid vision of exactly what they were going for. People wanted to see this, people wanted to play it, people loved the idea. Jeff went on stage during an announcment and specifically stated that OW1 is an always 6v6 team-vs-team game and there is no way they are losing that (and OW2 is the PVE).. Jeff leaves (or possibly gets pushed out), mass layoffs due to controversies, 5v5 is forced into the game despite the statement during an announcement, more aggressive monetization than what we had during Jeff's presence. And on top of all that.. PVE.. That the talent has worked 3+ years on was dropped into the garbage bin. Blame him all you want but they threw effort of that team into the garbage after all those years who developed massive amount of tools and content just to make this possible, and once again looking at BlizzCon 2019 footage of gameplay/streams, was nearing it's completion.

Overwatch 2 is very mixed. I have eternal depression when playing competitive becuase I get flamed for getting less heals than the lucio. However, arcade, custom game modes, and quick play can be very fun
Ow2 was dead the moment they announced they would remove 1 tank to "let the games queue faster". It's like a doctor removing your arm when you tell him it hurts a bit…
Overwatch 1 was started with 40-75 people working on it. I overwatch now has over 300 people working on it and almost nothing to show for it.....yippie some new maps and characters....
There isnt a way forward after this. Look what Overwatch 2 offers currently: -Divisive Robot Push mode -Grindy lame Battle Passes -Boring Generic Character Sojourn -Boring Junker Queen -Boring Zen omnic copy tank Ramattra -Annoying little girl Kiriko -Badly designed Support Lifeweaver Thats it. We have played every seasonal event in the game 2 or in some cases 3 times already. They legitimately have no more content for us than this. They need to fully reverse their decision before its too late.
PvE was the only grain of rationality which somehow could have justified killing OW1 in favour of a successor. The exact engine is the same. A few heroes have been added. The game shop has been revamped. That's it... Those are a few updates/dlc's at best. They did us so wrong. Hope nobody gives them a single dime. The pricing is outrageous to begin with. Especially if you paid 40 euro's for ow1 base game.

They destroyed Overwatch 1 on a dream they could make up for it in Overwatch 2. Basically everything beloved about the original was butchered knowingly on the false promise it would all come back better. I'm a hardcore fan and I've been playing since release, but this might just be enough to make me quit for good
i came back to overwatch 1 when it was unsupported, and even that version was much better! I had a reason to play it, i was able to earn good things in the game, i got fun and challenging matches. But its all gone, murdered for money even though a paid dlc would have done the same job.....
Dude at this point ow1 is just better than ow2. They removed hanamura nowhere in game so far. They nerfed genji (worst part cause I main genji). Removing about every map and a few abilities and adding some characters is pretty much all ow2 did.
I've stopped playing for a year now... Played since beta and never been more invested in any other games, still my favorite game til this day but they killed it slowly, pieces by pieces. They could have kept Overwatch 1 and stopped doing any updates on the game that it still would've been better than this dumpster truck

It's not just the game man, it's the entirety of Blizzard that's starting to become questioned. All of their games are semi-failing in some fashion. WoW is in an endless cycle of content draught followed by released content and the community is blown away by the simplest of additions. OW is dying. Starcraft barely gets any updates and is driven by mod creators and tournaments. Diablo is Diablo, it'll be hyped for a while and then die down, only to remain as a game only hardcore fans play, like it's always been. Blizzard is turning more incompetent by the day at creating entertainment, and everything seems to lead to becoming a money printer, like Overwatch now has become. At the same time keep in mind that this has nothing to do with them "lying", they didn't, they just failed to deliver a promise. However, empty promises and failing to deliver repeatedly has put Blizzard in a situation where their consumers are starting to doubt their competency. It's a very sad state of Overwatch, and Blizzard as a whole honestly.
I might be a bit slow on this wasn't the pve coming out in 2024 anyways i mean i get ow 2 is a money hungry game removing loot boxes battlepasses and all but i wouldn't say a complete failure just 90%

They legitimately have no more content for us than this. They need to fully reverse their decision before its too late.

I had no expectations and im still disappointed.
PvE was the only grain of rationality which somehow could have justified killing OW1 in favour of a successor. The exact engine is the same. A few heroes have been added. The game shop has been revamped. That's it... Those are a few updates/dlc's at best. They did us so wrong. Hope nobody gives them a single dime. The pricing is outrageous to begin with. Especially if you paid 40 euro's for ow1 base game.
If only activision cared, the same shit happened with Jason Blundell and the Cod Zombies community where the higher ups at activision never gave them full creative controll and resorces to be able to meet standards , thats why call of duty feels souless , and now overwatch everything activision touches rots thats what happend with jeff kaplan not enough resorces, not enough creative controll just make money and thats it

i came back to overwatch 1 when it was unsupported, and even that version was much better! I had a reason to play it, i was able to earn good things in the game, i got fun and challenging matches. But its all gone, murdered for money even though a paid dlc would have done the same job.....

Dude at this point ow1 is just better than ow2. They removed hanamura nowhere in game so far. They nerfed genji (worst part cause I main genji). Removing about every map and a few abilities and adding some characters is pretty much all ow2 did.

I've stopped playing for a year now... Played since beta and never been more invested in any other games, still my favorite game til this day but they killed it slowly, pieces by pieces. They could have kept Overwatch 1 and stopped doing any updates on the game that it still would've been better than this dumpster truck

It's not just the game man, it's the entirety of Blizzard that's starting to become questioned. All of their games are semi-failing in some fashion. WoW is in an endless cycle of content draught followed by released content and the community is blown away by the simplest of additions. OW is dying. Starcraft barely gets any updates and is driven by mod creators and tournaments. Diablo is Diablo, it'll be hyped for a while and then die down, only to remain as a game only hardcore fans play, like it's always been. Blizzard is turning more incompetent by the day at creating entertainment, and everything seems to lead to becoming a money printer, like Overwatch now has become. At the same time keep in mind that this has nothing to do with them "lying", they didn't, they just failed to deliver a promise. However, empty promises and failing to deliver repeatedly has put Blizzard in a situation where their consumers are starting to doubt their competency. It's a very sad state of Overwatch, and Blizzard as a whole honestly.
Even if PvE does not come out OW will still have a special place in my heart
