- Singer and actress Marianne Faithfull, who was part of the 1960s British Invasion with her hit single "As Tears Go By," and who was a muse to Mick Jagger, died on Thursday, January 30, 2025, at age 78. In this "Sunday Morning" profile that aired May 3, 2009, she talked with Anthony Mason about surviving sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll; her daring comeback album, 1979's critically-acclaimed "Broken English"; and her penchant for being "very overenthusiastically eager for life."

Nice interview with Marianne Faithful. Glad she came out of all the sixties turmoil and made amends with her son. Rest in peace Marianne. ❤🙏🎸🎼⭐💎🌹
Rest in Peace Marianne. I have to go back and listen to 'The Memory Remains' to hear you sing. Rest well, my British friend.
Still beautiful after such a life!
You were the melody of the sixties, and the reason for why they wrote all those beautiful songs, but don't be too sad, it won't be long before many of us will be with you soon, 🏵️🌸🌷🌹♥️🌼
I will miss her. I thought she was great. No one was like Marianne.
thank-you for your music💟
Love her! What an amazing life!
A totally honest warts and all interview. Amazing she hung on for as many years, after she had some serious near death experiences and ill health. The once ethereal folk/pop voice was long gone and changed into a hit and miss croak.. but she adjusted to it, and she still came out with music to suit.
A great muse to the Stones -gave Mick the book on which he based Sympathy For The Devil, inspired Wild Horses - a great artist in her own right (met her family's neighbor at Stones Twickenham 07). RIP Marianne 🎉🎉❤❤😢
Rest In Peace, Marianne E.Faithfull. You were truly a fabulous music performer.Even if you never had a beautiful looking face (which didn't happen).
You was a wonderful person, never forget ❤
I was listening to her after years and now this news hit me…
Can't wait to read Faithfull. RIP beautiful Marianne.
Marianne, i love you ❤ thank you for your beautiful soul and voice❤
That picture of her as a little girl was sweet in blonde hair. May she rest in peace 🕊️🙏😔
R.I. P. MARIANNE ❤
She had survived and now she can relax and accept love in the heavens.
Thank you for your music ❤🎤🎶🎸🎺
What I hear from her is to wake up to life before I close my eyes forever.
May Her Soul Rest In Heaven
R.i.p to miss Marianne faithful
What a loss..rip!
"I was SO beautiful, and SO clever and SO talented." And humble, too!
I remember the first time I saw her a long time ago. I thought she was such a beautiful English girl
She had every advantage a person could want. Sad she threw it all away, but very lucky she made it through and lived a long life.
She didn't throw it away. Mike Jagger is to blame for her addition to Heroin. HE STARTED HER ON IT !
Karma will be Maryanne Faithfuls champion.
Hazelden continues to be at the forefront of addiction recovery... including hard core drug addicts as well as alcoholics living on the streets. Recovery makes those who walk through life unconscious....very conscious to make amends, when possible, to those who were unwittingly swept up in the path of destruction. Rest in peace, Marianne.
RIP Marianne Faithful.
Weathered voice is a perfect description. The sweet soft voice we knew was gone. Decisions she made, like we all do, laid out what kind of life she would have and how she list control. Not alot of great choices. Whatever came to be, was her doing.
EXCELLENT !! and Thank You Maryanne. RIP
And now she is gone, she had a great life
Thinking of so many that did not survive their youth, Marianne was a completed soul and healed in her lifetime to in her words become herself. No small feat by a beautiful women. Love her John Lennon cover Working Class Hero
Glad she got it 💙
RIP Marianne Faithfull. Let's cue up "As Tears Go By" one more time to honor her.🎶
Very nice interview. She had both charisma and intelligence. Miss her and her voice so much !
Can anybody tell me what year the interview are from?
Marianne Faithfull Christine McVie David Bowie the Song Birds keep singing from the heaven above....forever greatful for the gift of your unique music.
At my house in the early 80’s, she and I sat on the floor and went through my record collection. I poured her straight vodkas. She told me that she had harmed herself after seeing a vision of Brian Jones in the mirror while she was performing Shakespeare in Australia. Certainly not the same person I had first watched as a teen-witnessing this ultimate “British bird” sing dispassionately. I hope she’s free of her demons at last.
She was the Yardley London Girl.
No, that was Twiggy ☮️
Nope. Jean Shrimpton.
I love you
Time and a place for negative comments . And this ain’t the time ! Let us Faithful Fans grieve for a while Gee it must be cool being Heartless ?
I've heard that it was at an appearance on SNL, that someone spiked a drink - that affected her voice.
Shr looks so much like Courtney Love now.
Hype is no substitute for actual talent.
❤
Loved her but her voice was wrecked being a chain smoker
Behind closed doors - one might EXPECT a naked woman. Wrapped in the rug happened when the cops bolted in, logically.
Legend ?
With respect a ‘legend’ at what ?
Yawn...didn't even know she "sang".
Mick & Keith sounded like a cpl of punks…Brian Jones & then her. Didn’t even give her writing credits on the song that she wrote…Pssh
She was a lost soul
Why do we glorify these?...👎👎
Legend ? Your joking?
Oh good, another negative nancy GenZ with their musical knowledge being limited to autotuned 'singers' and hip hop.... not to forget what sort of negative nasty person bothers to make a post within days of the persons dying... it says much more about what sort of person you are than what she was.
I was actually born in the late sixties, my nightmare gig would be Marianne Faithfull , Macy Gray, and Florence foster Jenkins, imagine your earholes after that lineup?
Marianne WHO????? 😮
let me guess? Gen Z? Go back to listening to your autotuned rubbish and leave the legends and the artists to those of us who can recognise a talent... because GenZ clearly cannot.
The female equivalent of David Bowie in that she is astronomically overrated.
I held my tongue... well, held my keystroke. But since you said the truth, I'll have to agree. Not since PT Barnum put up a sign, "This Way to Egress," and rubes paid up... not since then have both the public and critics been so snookered.
Unbelievable comment. Bowie is light-years ahead, in a completely different galaxy. Those who do not see it are sadly deaf, dumb and blind.
Oh Yuck!! One can't go back and be 20 yrs old again. Move on. Glorifying what was is a waste of time for this story. Her voice is horrible in case you haven't noticed. Stop pretending.
but not nearly as horrible as you coming onto this page to post that comment... not sure what sort of person does this other than one who is a pretty awful person.
INCREDIBLY INSPIRING ❤
