Elle fanning's acting is just breathtaking in this scene. She makes Jesse look enchantingly innocent yet slyly confident at the same time, especially when she's just sitting in her chair amongst the other girls waiting for her group's turn.
The guy who plays the fashion designer too. His emoting through the whole scene really drives home just how ENCHANTING Jessie is when it come so modeling. Even when he snaps out of his combination of interest, admiration and lust, to go back to business and ask for her card, only to literally have his breathe taken away when she walks. The actor did a REALLY good job of what could have easily been a hammed up scene.
The whole film revolved around her being innocent, yet someone who secretly knows what they are doing as they move up the ladder of opportunity across these circles. Girls do this all the time and then play the victim card at the end of the line.
Jessie (Elle) has the beginning of bags under her eyes, wrinkle lines on her cheeks, a gap slightly too side b/w her nose and mouth, a slight hunch in her back, and shoulders that droop, which makes her neck look slightly thicker at the base. That actress is a beauty, but she’s far from being the greatest beauty. Whereas Sara has perfect facial features and is thinner and taller with perfect posture. Putting Elle in white underwear and looking at her as if she was the fairest of them all doesn’t cut it. They needed to have another actress portray Sara to make Jessie stand out. Unless they were going with the idea that Jessie is a natural enchantress by nature who’s unaware of what she is. That makes her more innocent, which enhances the enchantment, so people who see her are mesmerized and naturally drawn to her. It’s as if the fashion designer is looking and feeling, but not actually seeing, what’s in front of him. His assistant is equally mesmerized.
The fact that her walk is one of the only walks we don’t get to see. We only see how he looks at her while she’s walking, just further establishing that the whole point of this is his male gaze. Absolutely gut wrenching
I wouldn't describe a man naturally finding some aspects of a woman attractive as 'absolutely gut wrenching'. Especially when that woman is entering a competition on the basis of her looks. The whole set up for these industries can and is objectifying and dehumanizing, but women are part of it just as much as men, often at the top too.
It kind of oddly adds to the innocence of her and her observation skills. It felt like she was noticing the squeaks and slams of the others as well and trying to identify why and then not do whatever caused it. When she initially turned and started to walk I noticed there was a bit of a more relaxed flow to her turn and step that wasn't there with the others.
