Not card related, but my Dad had a chance to buy his boss' 1 owner Porsche 930 factory Slantnose back in 1995 for $25k. My Mom said no. That's a minimum $500k car now.
As a person who bought many cards back in 2010 & 11, almost every card I bought felt like a giant win when I sold in 2020-22. But there were many offsets from buys during that time as well. Easiest thing to do, is buy cards you really want, hold for fun and just hope they do well. If they don't then at least you liked them throughout.
@ShaneGillis432HZ C Ronaldo Panini Megacraques 2003 PSA 10's. I sold 4 BGS 9.5's a PSA 9 and a BGS 9 for dirt cheap as well. Sold a Mike Tyson Panini Supersport 87 PSA 10 for $1500. Haven't seen another since.
I sold a Jordan auto for $3,500 around 2018, and it went for $56,000+ just the other day. Sold it for about 30% comps to a big Jordan collector before I got back into cards. Not fun!
@RobbingRips yeah I wasn't upset about it at all until I learned recently that at the time there was a comp for $12,000 and I let an experienced collector talk me into $3,500. But ya live and learn!
Sold my entire Pokemon collection for 600 or so bucks a couple years before the crazy boom. Today it's worth more than our house. Not a day goes by that it doesn't gnaw at me. I can't even look at Pokemon when I go to card shows.
A good story: Overpaid for a Jackie Robinson Leaf rookie in 2003 from a Fritsch ad from, maybe, a Tuff Stuff mag ad for $375. Sold that in or around 2010 for $1300 and added an additional $700 or so for a PSA 6. So, I'm just over $1000 into the PSA 6 that I could've sold during the COVID nonsense for $70,000 or so. I didn't, but it is worth a lot more in my heart, and it remains in my collection. That's my best turnaround, but not sure that even $100,000 would get me to part with it.
Been on both sides of this, with the same card. 😅 Bought a Shohei rookie for $20 in 2019, sold it for $400 in 2023, it’s now worth probably 1500 at least. But I guess my 1900% increase was better
I agree with Doug on Ohtani. I've been buying cards in the off season and to me it's been my best move for me. But yes the high end cards don't matter. But of you but 10 Refractor psa 10s you can make money when he gets hot next season again. Good stuff guys.
In 2018, I hit a 2017 Patrick Mahomes National Treasures Gold RPA /10 in a break. I sold before the season started that year for $2k. Just two years later in 2020 when everything boomed, that card was going over $1M. I'm still sick about it and think about it daily.

The issue I really have with the kanji auto is it was wiped and signed right above the statement that says "Topps Certified Auto" ... but now, it is most certainly NOT a Topps certified auto. 100% with TPott here, use a non-auto card.
Here's my story. Back in 2004 I purchased 3 cases (9 boxes) of 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection. I opened all 9 boxes and sold everything by 2010. I made some decent profit but if I had kept them unopened, well, you all know what they are worth now.
I remember watching a guy open a pack of basketball cards in a shop in wi and he pulled a Michael Jordan signed card that was worth 10000 at the time. This was in 1997 or 98. Can't imagine what it's worth now. Everyone in the shop went wild and we all crowded around to take a look at it. I didn't pull it but it was a moment i won't forget!
