  • The Grape harvest finally arrived! Harvesting my red and white grapes for wine making. My first grape harvest and also first attempt at wine making. I'm working with a winemaker to produce the red wine and he is also helping me make jeropiga - a traditional grape liqueur - from the white grapes.
All leftover grapes will be gobbled up by myself or the birds.
My trusty helpers for the day, my friends at Casa Criativa. Find their UA-cam channel here - / casacriativaportugal
My wine maker is Laurence from the Keela Permaculture Farm. They also offer loads of workshops and courses for those with an interest in permaculture as well as permaculture design. Find their intriguing UA-cam channel here - / @keelapermaculturefarm

    About Girl Meets Farm:
I'm Christine. I started this journey in search of my forever farm in Portugal, and now I have found it!
This is my adventure as a solo expat on a farm in Central Portugal with my two fur-kids, Shakti & Shiva.
I've never owned or lived on a farm, but moved to Portugal in the hope of fulfilling a life-long dream of finding open space, subsistence farming and a safer, better life.
Now that we have found our farm, the second stage of our journey begins!
I have to figure out farm life while renovating an agricultural structure to make it habitable and turn it into a comfortable home for me and my furkids.
Thank you for joining our journey!

Good idea to have the bin in the wheelbarrow, much easier to move around and not so much lifting. Those grapes looked delicious.

    Fantastic grape yield, Christine.
Your excitement and enthusiasm is almost 'tangible ' .
Beautiful grapes and loads of hard work by yourself to be admired.
So happy your friends arrived to help.
Very interesting to watch Lawrence and assistants preparing the grapes for the wine making process.
Sure you are counting the days to your first sampling of your own wine and Jerepigo.
Cheers and have fun learning as you go!

Great job with your Grape Harvest and Wine venture. Amazing work. If I may ask just out of curiosity, you mentioned that the harvest will yield about 60-70 bottles of wine. Even if you sell those 70 bottles @ $20 each (I give a high price )for a Revenue of $1400. By the time you pay for crushing, time spent on the field, bottling etc would you make decent money to support a business. I am not being critical but wondered how wine makers make money when average price of bottle is less than $10 ea. I understand it may be more of a passion to enjoy making wine on your own and just wondering if you are looking at it as a Business. Once again Congratulations on a great job! Wish you the Best

Also have a look at Vinho de Talha for aging. I don't know how the price and longevity of oak barrels compare to Talha where you are. Sure your winemaker will give good advice as the process is very old in Portugal

Sweet grapes don’t necessarily mean sweet wine - the sugar is what makes alcohol.

    • @victorsummers2283

@@antoniodasilva1230 yes, I speak English. Fermentation turns the sugar into alcohol, which can make a wine that is NOT sweet because the sugar has turned to alcohol and the wine does not taste sweet.

174kg of grapes should give you at least 100 liters of wine, which is ~ 130 bottles.

The covering has nothing to do with spoiler of the batch our bugs because the fermentation and metosulfite kills all the bacteria big vineyards with mechanical machinery picks up all kinds of bugs
