Nikon's have a way of punching way above their weight class. Me and my girl we both bought compact mirrorless full frames. I got the Z5 and she got the A7C. While almost costing twice as much as my Nikon, at least where we live, when we went out for some landscape photography, the Z5 quite surprisingly stood toe to toe and even outclassed the A7C in some aspects. I was overjoyed and she was plain jealous. Plus I feel the Z5 is better built and feels more natural and ergonomic compared to the A7C, not to mention perks like a superior EVF, superior IBIS & weather sealing and 2xUHS-II slots. It was to a point where she asked me If I wanted to swap camera's with her and I said 'FUCK NO!'.
We are getting married, so yeah, I had to swap cameras. The Auto Focus on this A7C is great though.

The Z5 is most attractive as the most affordable of the Z full frame bodies, but if you're not cornered by the full frame criteria or craze, the Z50 is the real best deal. Only 2 things made me not get the Z50 - no IBIS and no Focus Shift. Now, if you are not into the Nikon eco-system, just look elsewhere there are equally competent cameras from the other makes.

Super epic video really entertaining! I'm currently using a nikon d810 shoot both video and stills. I'm looking at upgrading to mirrorless. What's your opinion on either getting a z6 or a Sony a7iii which do you suggest is better ?
Guys! As many others you are also trumpeting about ISO big difference between two sensors. But as you admit yourself you didn't noticed that big difference at all.
It is because BIS has not that much with ISO efficiency then with speed of reading the sensor charge. That is why Z5 has low FPS and low video capabilities. There is no firmware which will resolve that ever.
If you asked yourself why Z50 also without BIS has better performanses, it is because it is smaller sensor. Pure Physics: Speed=path/time.

Great video! I want to upgrade to this camera from my Z50 so badly but it bothers me how much they crippled the video software. If they even released a firmware update with 1080 in 120p that would be enough to push me over the edge.

@@Alex-zq2yx I actually ended up buying the Z5. It's awesome. Running it with a z 14-30. I still wish it had 1080/120P but making due with 60. It was worth the comprise. Great cam overall but especially for the price.

I've seen and read reviews regarding the Z6 acquires focus faster than the Z5 regardless having the same AF systems .. They say the Z5 tends to hunt more when shooting in low light mainly due to the Z6's BSI sensor having a faster readout than the Z5's CMOS sensor .. Is this by anyway true ?? Did you experience something like this in your reviews ??

AT 5:50 did you have the camera labeled incorrectly? The camera on the right, labeled as Z5 is showing top LCD display.
I'm buying when I get a job. It literally has 2 card slots, full frame, mirrorless, and under 2k. That's a steal imo
Great informative video, Nikon won't give us everything in one camera body, they must cripple it somehow. And Nikon never do firmware update to unleash big potentials like FPS or video capability. After all Z5 is an entry-level FF camera, But I agree, 4FPS and non-BSI sensor in 2020 is a shame. This Z5 won't sell much units among Nikon professional shooters as main body after all, unless they give the FTZ adapter for free along with the body.
Great video! I have a d750 and looking at mirrorless. I’m stills photography only, landscapes, city, travel, birds at the feeders, low light. This Z5 sounds great for me, except for low light being a stop behind the Z6? Any advice for my decision? Thank you
We tend to agree with your decision. The main drawbacks with the Z 5 come with its video performance, but in stills it is still a really strong little camera.
Have any firmware updates addressed these 'issues' 3 years later for the Z5?

The 1.7 crop makes the Z5 unfit for purpose (video) in my opinion. What's the point of splashing out on a 14-24 lens when Nikon management in their wisdom are going to turn your widest view into 25mm?
Glad you pointed it out in the review. Just makes me a little bit angry when some marketing exec thinks they can get away with this kind of insult to the consumer's intelligence in 2020!
One stop difference is huge! Just think iso 12,800 Vs 6400
It's not even 1 stop diffrence I'd say about 1/2 to 1/3 of stop and that's only in the darkest shadows at highest iso settings

I find bsi sensors show weird noise patterns and blotchy color noise i prefer the z5 more natural grain look
@Analog Nomad it doesn't effect the raw images tho that just so the camera can see in extremely dark scenarios if your doing astro photography you gonna be focusing to infinity any way so I don't see what the problem would be when doing astro. the live view can look noisy in low light yes but that has nothing to do with image quality at all.
@Analog Nomad the read out from the bsi sensor is different i think. I own the z6 as well and it does get noise in lowlight when the shutter speed goes down to like 1/15 of a second the sensor needs to see whats going on in order to focus when there isn't lots of light since the phase detection strips are built on the sensor this is why I'm going to sell my z6 and get a d850 i don't need video and the phase detect straps aren't incorporated on the sensor in dslrs. All Mirrorless cameras work this way this is why I still love nikon dslrs in low light you get cleaner dynamic range in the shadows meaning less color noise.
@Analog Nomad it really isn't banding just static you night have a defective product the evf is the same one on the z6 as in the z5 check your settings maybe you have it set up in a way where its causing that cause it really isn't that much different than the z6
@Analog Nomad Something weird I've noticed too when I use the FtZ adapter with f mount lenses the low light focusing improves dramatically which is weird you would think native lenses Will perform better in that aspect as we speak there is a new firmware update for the Z5 maybe it has some fixes

Should i upgrade my d750 to z5?
Wan Haziq, First, a warning based on my experience. I was excited that the FTZ adapter allows me to continue using all my older lenses. However, I began to notice that the addition of the adapter means the combined weight makes switching to a mirrorless for its smaller and lighter body not make sense. So I began to think of replacing all my lenses to the native Z lenses. Have you checked their prices😝

Wan Haziq, AF is definitely much better, especially the ‘face and eye’ detection.

nobody says that Z5 must have perfect light for good photo. In shaded areas pictures are much darker then on Z6. Dynamic range is poor on this camera when compare to Z6/z7
@Jacek have you try to play with settings? Say D-Lighting?
Out of camera JPG will produce less dynamic then what you can get pulling dark in RAW. I was actually amazed how good that work. If you wish out of camera results try D-lighting set and measuring type.

@@georgedavall9449 . Hi I tried Z5 for little and end up actually buying it. I still feel that I have to be extra careful with my exposition . I had 6d and a7 ii before and thought they were bit easier to work highlights and shadows. But I am very happy with Z5 now
I find the constant interuptions annoying and unwatchable..As a 1st time watcher of your channel I didnt find it humorous or educational, let alone entertaining. The hard breaks from the bloopers made me forget what you were mentioning.
