I really like the crayola colored pencils… all of them!!! It’s true, they are a budget pencil, but as long you are coloring for the relaxing and de stressing you get from coloring, why spend hundreds on pencils… I have over 3500 pencils, all brands, some are good, some aren’t… but they work if you like them… thanks for sharing!!!❤️🌷🌸🌹
IC-035 in the Indra Pastel box is my go-to when I want to do a very pale skinned ginger person. A very light layer of Prismacolor Eggshell and then a firm overlay of the IC-035 and one of the pinks in the Indra Pastel for blushing the cheeks and I've got some amazing skin tones for Prisma Cadmium Orange, Pumpkin Orange, and Sierra Brown for ginger hair. Light pumpkin orange for shading along the hair line and freckles. I also did a squeal when you broke out the Indra Pastels. Lol. They were my Prime Day Splurge. I couldn't pass them up for a $15 deal.
Hi Kori! I have a couple of prof sets, poly’s, Holbein, Luminance but i bought a couple of budgetsets to spare my profs. I love the brutfuner square and lately i bought the brutfuner macarons and brutfuner metallic. When you color with these and you press hard they are not so shiny. Go over it with a lite touch and whow!! Better than metallic gelpens!
Would love to see them swatched live. But I think the 300 set would be fine too. lol. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the Brutfuner and I have one spare set. I need to get them on my wishlist so I can watch out for lightning deals on the newer sets!
Lovely, as always! 🖤 I completely agree with you on the Prismas being a “budget” pencil! I’ve seen other so called budget sets that end up costing more per pencil. ESPECIALLY if you wait for those Amazon sales or holiday deals. Every time I see you mention Brutfuner squares i have to remind myself that I don’t need anymore pencils! It seems silly to justify after saving up for something like Luminance or Lightfast. In my defense, I don’t have any “oil” based pencils 😅
I love seeing reviews on pencils, so thank you for doing this! My first set of Prismas is a hot mess of REALLY off-center cores, so for coloring in the future I'll be moving on to other brands. I got the full set of Black Widows, and those have been awesome! I may have to try Crayola someday. They've been around for a million years for a reason!
Hi Kori! We would love and appreciate to see a review of the 520 set of Kalour's and compare them to the set of 520 Brutfuner pencils 😊 and which one would you recommend 😅 thank you for doing all this 😊
My favourite pencils are my Faber Castell Polychromos, but I do like some budget pencils too. I don't have the Markart but I do have the Starjoy gold. (and apparently they are VERY similar)They are lovely; squishy to work with but keep their point and the colours are very saturated.
@@ColorfullyOptimistic no no they're nothing like Polys, I agree! I meant that they are much like the Markarts. I'm not a prisma fan but it's nice to have pencils that behave differently on different paper. Polychromos aren't good on some colouring book paper.
I love my Kalour's, that colour selection I just think is amazing for the price. I so want to try the Indra's but they are just silly price over here, (Uk) so for now I will have to wait. Some great choices, x ❤
Retired long-time owner of a Design Studio w/ a large design staff here - You can't beat Brutfuners' 520 w/ its well balanced blend of oil & wax and consistent color delivery. Also use the (NLA) soft waxy SpectraColor and Berol Prisma's where needed. Kalour's wax-to-color ratio is not well blended delivering lots of uncolored wax. The wax used in FC's Black set is too soft for oil resulting in a challenging color pay-off. The best balanced Budget waxy pencils found so far are the Markart.
Thank you for your reviews. I would love to see an example of something you colored using them instead of just swatches. I'm just a casual adult colored and I own prisma pencils but actually use my 100 count Crayola set most often. I also have the skintones set and they are lovely.
I love my prismas and polys but for some reason my Kalour 300 are always on my desk. I recently got the Brutfuner macarron and I really like them, I'll probably get the 520 set too. I'd love to give a try on the Star Joy , unfortunately they are not available on Amazon here in Europe. Thank you, I appreciate your videos.
I LOVE the Scholars! They have done really well for me on slick paper that doesn't have much tooth. I wish they came in a set larger than 60, but I guess the idea is for the "kids" to learn to how to use the Scholars, then upgrade to Prisma Premiers.
I do like the brutfunner square pencils but I’m unlikely to buy them again the first set I got had duplicate pencils so I was missing colours I returned it and the replacement had one with an off centre lead so I can’t sharpen it to use the wood covers most of the lead. The main reason I won’t buy them again even though I like the way they look and feel is because to replace a used colour I would have to buy the full set. I am trying to be less wasteful so I’d rather buy a set that has open stock so I can replace individual pencils I feel that is better for the environment and my wallet. Great video
I definitely enjoy open stock and artist-grade pencils, but I know not everyone can afford it, especially when a artist pencil is $1.50-$4 (depending on the pencil brand) a piece, while these are all under $0.50 a piece. I do love the Bruts though. Weird how you've had those issues. I didn't have much of that on mine.
I love my Brutfuner squares, they're so soft and creamy sometimes I question whether or not they're really oil based like they advertise 😂 they wouldn't make any money if they sold open stock because they're so cheap as it is, I think I got my squares on Amazon for like 20 some dollars. Heck I spend that much at the grocery store just on junk food I don't need 😂 I only had one pencil that was a thorn in my side, the wood keep cracking down the one side every time I tried sharpening it. I bought an electric Afmat sharpener and that issue went away, all my sharpening issues for ALL my pencils including my Prismas went away. Thank God lol Happy coloring!
I'm so glad the Brutfuner squares came back with the names.. I was worried that they weren't coming back.. but them coming back with names is possibly why they were gone so long..
I keep a set of Brutfuner squares at my office for my "hurry up and wait" coloring kit - my job has a lot of that, and my boss is fine with using the extra time that way. I love coloring with them, even though they aren't my Prismas (those stay at home).
I love my brutfuner square, there's a special apeal to them. But my favorite buget pencils are the Deli. Super cheap, but with pigmentation and layering abilities that puts them halfway to artist grade. Some say Nyoni, markarts, and starjoy are made with the same lead, but i've haven't tried those🤷🏻♂️.thank you for the vid.
So, Nyoni, Starjoy and Markart are from the same manufacturer, and I've used Starjoy and Nyoni. Starjoy are actually rather pricey, but at least they aren't as pricey as the Castle Art Gold that came out to copy them.
Great video, very informative 🎉 I think I may have mentioned this before, but the Markart 120 set is one of my favorite budget brands - they’re an oil based pencil and they perform great in Hana Karlzon books.
@@ColorfullyOptimistic If you've tried Nyoni, then you've tried Markart. They are exactly the same pencil (exact same name, numbers, colors, just different brand name and packaging).
Great video!! I own 3 of the sets you mentioned and really enjoy them! If you do do a review of the Kalour 520 would be interested in a comparison with the Brutfuner 520 to know which you would recommend more. Like someone else mentioned in the comments, I also really enjoy the Markart pencils and Soucolor pencils as well!! Thanks again 😊
I'm watching your video again, trying to get a good comparison between brutfuner and kalour?? I have the expensive pencils but have been trying budget price pencils. Because of your video, I bought the Indra 72 macaron and I love them! I also tried the Amazon premium 72 pencils and I am very impressed, I will buy more for myself and for gifts. I tried Kalour metallic pencils and didn't like them, but because they are metallic, I don't think I can make a fair assessment so I would like to try regular colors of kalour or brutfuner. Do you think there is a difference between the two, do you find one preferable to the the other? Just wondering. Thank you so much for your videos.
I'm not super happy with Kalour in general, but I do prefer Brutfuner in both the 520 set and their square. They seem to be a better pencil overall and they are easier to work with, for my style at least, than Kalour.
Hi Kori. Thanks for sharing this. I also love all these sets especially the Brutfuner Squares, Indra and Kalour. I'm wondering where you got the swatch chart for the Kalour 300. It's too large of a set for me to put them in proper color order and your sheets appear to be in order.
Great review Kori! Have you ever tried Arrtx pencils? I've heard good things about them and contemplating whether to buy them, but I have the brutfuner and I like them, I just wanted a little softer and waxy.
Thanks So Much for the video. It's very helpful Kori. To many choices out there. It's great to know what your favorites are. I saved this video to refer to later this year😄🙋🎃
@ColorfullyOptimistic I just watched it! I was great, but you had said you thought the 300 was better and would go into detail as why...I was just curious. I ask because my favorites are all tiny and I really can't swing the price for my prismas at yhe moment and looking for something less but close to if that makes sense! Thank you!!
Thanks Kori for reminding us that we don’t need expensive pencils to color a beautiful picture. I do like my Crayola, Brutfuner and Kalours a lot however those Amazon Basics got passed on🤣
HI the only set I'd agree with you on is the brutfuner squares, although now they have put an english name on them they seem crumblier. at least they do here in the uk. Crayola yick, indra creative we cant get for love nor money, Amazon basics used to be affordable till agiain they put the price up. But I love the black widows but probably in the middle range price wise now. However would NEVER EVER have prismacolour premier. Sorry to burst your bubble by disagreeing. A nice bargain price i got for my 1st ever set was a steadtler 72 before they brought out dream journey. Before that i used to get WH Smiths when i was little.
I find the Kalours don't layer or blend very well. I have the 240 set and even with the great color selection I probably won't buy them again. I did just receive the 50 set of Black Edition Faber Castell. The handful I've tried seem really nice so far. That set of pastels looks great! I'd love a nice set pastel colors! Great video!💕
Yes, I noticed that too. They have some issues layering, but if you are just starting out and not doing a lot of layering, they are a good, affordable pencil to try out.
Thank you for this video. Can you tell me, in your opinion, which of these are the softest? I have arthritis in my hands and can't use most pencils unless they are soft and don't need lots of pressure or layers to get color payoff. Thank you in advance 😊
Thank you for sharing. It’s so helpful because I have a mix of budget-friendly and expensive. Can I ask where you got your binder with the charts you swatched? I’ve been looking all over and can’t seem to find any or I’m not using the correct keywords. Anyone ? I❤
I'd love to see some videos of the 520 set, but you've done your share with the 300 set. No obligations to you on that. Use the bucks to get something you don't already have.
I suspect the formula for Brut squares has changed. I recently got them after the restock on Amazon. The blues were scratchy and all of the colors were hard to build up, even with firm pressure. By comparison I have an early set of 50 Brut Macaroons that are wonderful for the price. Firm, but smooth and pigmented. So, yeah, I think the formula changed. Or maybe I got a bad batch? Guess I waited too long to get them.
@colorfullyoptimistic I already returned them so I can't confirm, but I think they were a dull shine, closer to matte. I didn't know they had different finishes. Do you think the finish is an indicator of how they'll perform? Interesting 🤔 It makes sense since they would be different batches, maybe even different factories.
Meh. I’m coloring in coloring books-lightfast pencils are overkill. (For me they are, at any rate). Also I love having multiple sets of budget ones. 🎉 Thanks for the list of faves!
When it comes to budget pencils....I'm a Brutfuner girl 😂 I have and love the Squares, the 50 Macarons and the 520's. Some colors of these are more used than my Prismas, Polys, Pablo's, Colorsofts, Drawings....🙈😅 So maybe I 'll get the new 75 Macarons too😊

Do you think the finish is an indicator of how they'll perform? Interesting 🤔 It makes sense since they would be different batches, maybe even different factories.
Do you have a link to the swatch chart you used for the Kalour pencils?
It is on Etsy, I have a whole video swatching them that includes the chart too
Thank You For This Video.
You're welcome
Does this set also have the same pastel colored pencils that are in the Macaron Pastel Colored Pencils set of 50?
Which set? I show a few here so want to make sure we are talking about the same ones.
Crayola now has a 150 set with colors of the world and get this A FREAKING PASTEL SET.
Yes! I have seen that. They removed the 100 count and created that one.
@@ColorfullyOptimistic will you review the pastel set
Thanks for this great video. The Indra pencils look amazing, but in German amazon the cost more than 110€ what is more than 120$
Oh yikes that's expensive.
Where can I get a color swatch sheet like yours?
Which one. I have a few
Meh. I’m coloring in coloring books-lightfast pencils are overkill. (For me they are, at any rate). Also I love having multiple sets of budget ones. 🎉 Thanks for the list of faves!
I totally agree! You don't need Lightfast for books
where did you get your swatch book???
I get my swatch pages from a variety of places, actually so which one in particular?
@ullyOptimistic the one with the teal you show it in my favorite budget pencils for adult coloring video
$83,00 canadian for the indra 72 set , crazy and far from affordable $53.00 for the 120 squares
Yea I know for Canada the prices aren't great
When it comes to budget pencils....I'm a Brutfuner girl 😂 I have and love the Squares, the 50 Macarons and the 520's. Some colors of these are more used than my Prismas, Polys, Pablo's, Colorsofts, Drawings....🙈😅 So maybe I 'll get the new 75 Macarons too😊
Yeah I do really enjoy the square bruts. They are under a different name on Amazon now, but same product.
