    Hey guys! I wanted to let you know I just launched an "Insiders" Newsletter where once a week I'm sharing an important lesson I've learned in aviation, links to my latest content so you don't miss out, and links to any other interesting or helpful content I've found. I enjoyed your video. I'm the son of a pilot so when other kids went camping with their dad I was going to Osh Kosh, or visiting military bases or flying in small planes.
    My dad is a former Navy pilot flying C-130s with skids and jato jets in Antarctica. He also flew P-3 Orion sub hunter planes. He's a retired B777 captain and line check airman flying ORD to China. And I've flown with him in his Cessna 172 from Chicago to Austin and Daytona Beach.
    I always immediately connect with people that have a passion for flying. I feel very blessed to have had the opportunity to experience the joy of aviation.

    Just for clarification, the recently certified Epic E1000 is “fastest single turboprop” in production. Biggest difference is ROC which is rated at 4k’/min but in normal operation climbs at 3-3.2k while the TBM’s are happier 1.8-2k climb. Both awesome aircraft. As a 340A owner-pilot, I’ve tested both and just amazed at both aircraft. Haven’t decided which we’ll buy but I too loved the G3000. Epic is faster point-point and much roomier cabin & cockpit which is why we’re leaning towards that aircraft

    • @joeyv821
      @joeyv821 4 роки тому +2

      Congrats on life! Sounds like a dream! So you picked the 340A over the other 2? If so, deciding factor?
      Happy flying!

    • @MichaelM-to4sg
      @MichaelM-to4sg 4 роки тому +2

      ZomgWtfBBQ No, not at all. I’ve had our 340A, as owner-operator, since 2007. I had not flown much in 20 years, approaching retirement looking to have freedom to fly on my schedule w/partner and our dogs to visit my kids, etc. The 340A was initially intended as a transition platform to a MU2, which I flew a lot in 80’s as an AE/ME in aerospace industry.
      Even upon retirement in 2012, the 340A was serviceable for our needs...plus I’d spent a lot of $$ on maintenance, rehab and upgrades. We then flew w/friends in their TBM850 that holiday season and Stella, my partner, was amazed. I thought about upgrade costs and spoke w/broker to sell the 340A, then met an Epic LT owner-operator. Gorgeous aircraft, much roomier cockpit, important when you’re 6’3” w/bad right hip😉. I wasn’t too pleased w/insurance limitations for experimental aircraft. I put off upgrade, given the 340A still met our mission needs. In the last 2 years, my daughter finished college and moved to Lake Tahoe, my son is in Seattle and my partner’s family is all in New England. The thought of flying commercial during pandemic is untenable. We live nearly 90 minute drive from DEN. Given our mission, both payload, including the dogs, and distance, a fast turboprop like the TBM910 and E1000, is considerably faster than any other reasonable alternative, including the 340. It’s faster and much lower operationally than MU2. If E1000 production line starts up again by end of year, I’ll likely order E1000 for its space and speed advantage. Otherwise a TBM910 will be in our hangar within the next 12-18 months👍

      Michael M we are trying to move into the king air from a 340A, because of the cabin room.

    • @MichaelM-to4sg
      @MichaelM-to4sg 4 роки тому +1

      Owen Lang Have you considered operational costs of KA vs SETP like TBM or Epic? Both are considerably faster and operational costs are 50% less, often more depending upon which KA you’re considering.
      With Textron developing their own SETP, albeit under Cessna banner, I think even they understand the impractical limitations of KA platform in a world of VLJ’s & SETP’s

      Are these typically flown by the owner, or by a hired PIC whereas the owner is some sort of fat-cat executive sitting as a PAX? Clearly a professional pilot doesn't make anywhere nearly enough to own one of these for personal use. And a millionaire executive who goes through all the loops to get the ratings to fly this... probably happens, but as more of an oddball? I wonder if Elon Musk holds some level pilot license, that would suit him well. But other billys - not so much... I doubt even Elon is PICing his Gulfstream-G650 ER though. At least not officially :-D

    I have had 2 Lancair 4P with Walther turbines 724 max hp. Transition was from a piston 4P. I had no turbine training, and no problems. My turbines few at 300 and 310 kts FL 260 and apx 35 gph. I was with a friend, John Cook from Deland FL one winter night, and we were doing 340 kts TAS. Initial climb 4000 fpm. The 4P is a spectacular aircraft that got bad press from accidents that were mostly pilot error. You also need heavy right rudder on takeoff. The piston 4P almost as fast with far less fuel burn. Great plane. Too bad it ended up out of production.

    A question to all experienced pilots: would you like an automatic right-rudder application mode for an aircraft like this? It's relatively easy to digitally compute the right rudder force based on engine RPM, manifold pressure, airspeed and/or AoA - and apply 80-90% of it. After which the pilot would need to add maybe the last 10-20% (Pilots are used to applying RIGHT rudder so it's best to undercorrect by 20% than overcorrect by 10% requiring the pilot to apply LEFT rudder which many single-engine pilots would find unnatural and confusing).
    Of course, any such hydraulic or pneumatic "right-rudder-helper" would come with a quick "kill-switch", which would disable it instantly and revert to fully manual rudder control.
    I also get the aversion to all kinds of automation and computer intervention when in comes to flight control itself.

    • @billmoran3812
      @billmoran3812 2 роки тому +1

      What you are suggesting already exists. It’s called rudder trim. No electronics, hydraulics or anything complicated. It is an adjustable tab on the rudder that uses airstream preassure to push the rudder in the direction and amount that the pilot requires. Same idea as elevator trim. A large high performance plane like the TBM is equipped with trim on all three axes, pitch, roll and yaw.

    I really like your Videos. You have hit on some of the biggest questions that we have when considering whether to continue to rent an airplane or to buy one. I was really seriously considering buying an airplane and now I'm even more serious about that concept. Your video has shown me that this is a doable thing, as well as that when my mission changes I realize I can still just rent the bigger plane rather than owning it. Also your videos gave me more useful information than some of the other things. For example, some pilots talk about the cost of an airplane per hour of flight time. The problem that I have with that is: first, my flight time per year is probably not the same as theirs. Second, I can't reasonably anticipate how much that's going to be in any given year. But, based on what you have given, I can see a budget clearly. Thanks again for posting.

    Probably one of the coolest and fastest "Civilian" Turboprops ever, just that long nose is making VFR landings probably a bit more difficult.

    Just down my road from me a Dr. that had a brand new private pilot certificate and an instrument rating. He must of had simulator and actual in plane flying experience. He took off from Erie Ottawa airport in Port Clinton, Oh in TBM 700 and climbed to Fl 200.He was headed to Cincinnati Lunkkin. About 2/3 of the way he made an unscheduled left hand gradual decent into the ground and died. I don’t know what ATC was saying to him. It was uncontrolled. There was plenty of farms to set it down but he went through major power lines and trees.

      Kevin Capps Here's the truth with those tailwind trolls - They have a Phenom t-shirt and a Cessna hat from eBay. They have an old issue of Plane & Pilot magazine, 6-8 hrs on Flight Simulator and a 30 min "Discovery Flight" in a C-152, they got for a birthday present. Yet, they troll videos spouting their criticism, hoping for at least one thumbs-up, from an unsuspecting viewer, willing to acknowledge their wisdom and insight. And, they will log more "alleged hours" in video comments, than most commercial pilots log in years. In short, they are full of @#$& !
