No, it is indeed a myth. Pirates mostly looted at sea and went after other boats/ships. The villages were not main targets -- the villages during age of pirates was not crazy developed with high villas and large hotels like now. The buildings also were not very high. Pirates also knew very well how to navigate and have been documented as being good with directions. They would mostly loot the harbor and wouldn't waste time going through little streets.

    Kalispera Gabe,
Such a nice video, very emotional for me, but also full of priceless information..
You're really lucky to have visited sooo many gorgeous islands, but also Spain, Malta and the NL, then to "stumble" on
Jimmy, selling your precious bike ..and also making a new friend..and all these adventures before the high season in only 1 month. You're wisely living your best life..a real legend for me. Mykonos is jam packed right now..(+ skyrocketing prices for sure) you can hardly walk through these lines..in the real maze of this Greek islands, surely built like this, to prevent pirates invasions..
You mentioned this nice couple Nicole and Christos, I remember them as very special artists and so interesting people, would be great if you could meet them again.
I've visited Mykonos in 2018, june, but there were by far less tourists..I can only imagine how different it could be in February.
I really appreciated this 2023 Greek series of yours, helped me so much to relax after work..
since Paris is also full of tourists..in spite of the social context, violent protests , riots, etc.etc.
I'm sorry that you can only stay 90 days in the Schengen zone, so looking forward to see which non Schengen country you chose for hiking certainly wonderful mountains. My guess would be Monténégro or the Italian Dolomites.
    We shall see..
Safe and happy travels , Gabe and thank you for having shared Amazing Greece with us, your loyal subscribers.

May I help your spelling of Gyros? The Greek Gy is spelled like in gynaecologist (both terms derive from the same language, although that`s where the similarity ends) while the stress is on the last syllable, like gueROSS. At least in Germany 6€ would be a pretty common price for a gyros, which we call yufka or duerum if it is rolled tortilla style or doener if its served in a flatbread. Those are the turkish names for pretty much exactly the same thing.

Let see what next! I can highly recomment a bike tour through the netherlands. As the name says: no hills only a few dyks and a lot of bikepaths. Only in the south near belgium gets a little bit hillier. So many nice small villages, old towns, rivers, canals and history. And the dutch people are very friendly and the most speak very good english.
You can rent a bike (or a bakfiets for all your stuff) and ride from town to town.
240€/week for an electric cargo bike....

I think a good place to start is Santorini and some of the nearby islands such as Anafi, Naxos, Paros, Amorgos, Ano Koufonisi, etc. All of the islands around there are worth a visit, you can't go wrong. Some are more touristy and expensive than others and they all have quite different things to see and experience. So you might want to grab a guidebook or else do online research and learn more about them to help make up your mind. The big advantage is they're close to each other, so fairly short and cheap ferry rides. Have a great trip.

Gabriel, how's it going? do u think I can travel the Greek islands for 20 euro a day? I recently spent 20 days in Israel and spent less than 450 dollars, I am a real minimalist. What's u expert opinion? Whats d story with Harold Balder calling u 'Gabriel high roller traveler' in all his videoes.

    • @GabrielTravelerVideos
      @GabrielTravelerVideos  Рік тому

I guess it depends on what you mean by "travel". You could probably survive on 20 euros if you sleep on the streets or in a tent or use couch surfing and only buy food at a supermarket, but you won't be able to afford accommodation or eating out other than fast food. I traveled in Greece for 30 euros a day back in 2016, but prices have gone up since then. Let me know how it goes.

Don't know why but I really hate Mykonos. To me, it's against everything Greece represents: honest people, good value, authentic experiences. Doesn't help that I got stuck overnight at Mykonos airport a few years ago when our flight back to the UK was delayed 24 hours. Let me tell you, sleeping on their airport floor is not fun.

Because people love their birthplace or the area that they grew up as kids. On the other hand Athens is a place that most people don't want or like to live but they're forced to because there are the most jobs. Also Athens is the heart of every political, financial, social activity. And you can find any kind of style or class. So every group of people expresses its opinion through vandalism, riots, protests..

Mykonos is overhyped, overpriced and probably one of the most overrated islands in Greece. Just like Santorini. There are many other islands that are much more worth visiting. I'd rather spend a month on Schinoussa, Irakli, Donousa, Koufonisi, Hydra than a week on Mykonos or Santorini.
